Hi Matt! Just a few words on hollow wall anchors. I have installed thousands of square feet of custom racks, fixtures, cabinets, etc. on hollow walls. The anchor you are using is good for about 50# of shear each, so that rack should be good for 100# +/- . The issue will be wall board fatigue. As you rack and de-rack the swords (or if you have heavy trucks rumbling by all day) it will impose micro loads, and vibratory loads, which will cause the anchors to loosen up in time. If this happens, there are a lot of ways to repair it depending on your preferences. Your finished product looks great, by the way. Best!
@scholagladiatoria4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I will certainly keep an eye on them. Each rack is only holding around 20-30lbs, so it should be fine, but I'll be careful not to wiggle them too much!

I just used some rifle racks found at yard sales. Works fine. You'd probably be a bit more secure screwing into the studs, which should be at 16 inches center to center. The whole thing when finished is as wide as a baby bed and 2 feet long. It looks really nice, if my daughter would quit bumping into it when she passes. 😵

Nice racks Matt! The only disadvantage I think you will find (and I saw it partially during the quick hanging of swords) is the standard spacing of the rack does not always work with the curvatures of the swords. As you know, my set up has 2 vertical studs that I use hooks on. As my swords change I can change the placement of the hooks, and no holes in the wall beyond the anchor points for the studs. Keep up the great work.

I have this rack exactly the same as yours (where I come from, this actually sounds funny). They house sabres very well, but for gladii and medieval swords, especially the broader ones like type XIV and XVIIIc is a massive pain to put onto these racks as they tend to roll around, particularly when they are in scabbards (will never leave swords out of scabbard in a house where children gamboling about XD).
@andrek69204 жыл бұрын
So I have a question, and to give context, my favorite game is one called Battle Brothers, a game where you control a mercenary company in a low-fantasy quasi medieval/renaissance land with a german setting. In this game if you play for long enough and get experienced enough at it you might come to a point where you are fighting maybe 2 times per day on average, and this is quite obviously rather unrealistic, though so is everything time-based in the game, the point however is that when you do this your Brothers will inevitably get injured, and then you'll take another fight and won't have reservists available and will simply send them in there. Playing this game I started wondering and came up with this question: How often would soldiers or mercenaries or fighters in general fight injured in medieval (or thereabouts) battles? Or maybe skirmishes would be a more accurate question as that is what you are fighting in the game, 6 vs 6, 12 vs 12, 12 vs 24 etc, not very big battles. I imagine if attacked in camp they would obviously defend themselves if forced to, but if say you were fighting some brigands off and took nasty blow to your leg or shoulder or something, and then your leader decides to find another fight, would you be sent to fight aswell, or go fighting willingly? Or would you be held safe as far as was possible? I'm then not talking about some minor injuries ofcourse which might hinder you but not significantly, though probably also nothing too major that would simply not allow you to fight at all.
@QuentinStephens4 жыл бұрын
Surely you could have done much of that with umbrella stands? :) Seriously, two things: I see that your study door opens inwards so I hope you've put a stopper in the floor to prevent damage, and I hope that at least one of the screws of each rack goes into a wood upright behind the plasterboard. The racks look the right width for both hooks to go into uprights. And I hope the V&A will allow you access to that rack you found there so you can have it copied.

When it comes to worrying about the cultural "look" of a sword rack, I think you can apply the same logic that Ewart Oakeshott applied to spearhead design... "A spear is a spear whether it is of the Middle Bronze Age or the nineteenth century; there is little room for variation and the same shapes of spearhead crop up in every age and in every land." It's equally ok to use such a rack for katana, Muslim swords, Medieval European swords or 19th century military sabers because it holds and displays them all equally well! Anyway, if the Royal Armouries in Leeds can have a "Hall Of Steel, why can't Matt Easton have a "Wall Of Steel"?😁
