I had a friend who was a retired RN LCDR. He always forgot to get his sword down to show me when I stopped round. I hope someone from his family got it when he passed on. I think he was commissioned around 1968, so his sword was probably made just like these. I like the fact that the swords are still combat ready, unlike the majority of American Service swords, which are just dress swords.

A very interesting and informative video. Technically the current pattern of sword used by the Royal Navy was first introduced in 1827. It was merely tweaked in 1929 when the blade was straightened (it had been a slightly curving sabre before), narrowed and made a bit short - essentially making it a court sword. The half basket guard was not altered at all with the slight changes of 1929. However, swords are never delivered by the manufacturer sharpened. It has always been up to the owner to sharpen the blade and since all RN swords today are used for ceremonial purposes, they are not sharpened. It cuts down on the chances of accidents and makes using the sword more practical and safer (no pun intended!).

Swords were used in the start of ww1, but after the britain realises how advanced weaponry axis forces had they started issuing guns to everyone. In ww2 broad swords were rarely used (iv only heard this in epic stories)

For todays military the sword is a display item linked to tradition, a mere cosmetic, it is no longer a weapon and is of no use for battle or fighting. However for those who think tradition is more important than battle preparation and lethality, then the sword holds some weird mystical, magical properties.

The United States cavalry yes those people ride on horses and use swords and spears got rid of their sabers which are basically large handheld spears in the mid-1930s about the same time that the United Kingdom got rid of their mounted cavalry the one thing that they kept The cutlass which is a small hacking sort those are kept on a little longer in the US Navy and the British Navy officially and unofficially into World War II although there was a directive of the US Navy to take them off of ships it was very hard for certain people to get rid of them and there’s an anecdote that a US Marine engineer used a cutlass to dispatch someone during hostilities in Korea in the 1950s at incheon In fact it could be argued that the bayonet is the last vestige of an edged weapon used in real combat turning the rifle into a spear

Quite amazing Tom Beasley from Wilkinson sword will be turning in his grave . He made the Stalingrad sword made by Wilkinson . The ROYAL Navy going to India . Where did the skills go in England ? WE lost them because Wilkinson sword management lost touch with the reality of modern bladesmithing . There are still craftsmen trained as true Bladesmiths alive and well who can do this historical work properly .

Fyi: these swords aren’t actually that strong, they are built for ceremonial purposes and yes they are usually sharp, but a well made katana could shatter one of these. Katana are made less for ceremony and more for strength and cutting, these swords are for elegance and beauty and are never used for war anymore.
