I didnt appreciate the humor. It's like two movies being pushed into one. I'd prefer one made serious with Rutger Hauer and another comedy with Mathew Broderick. Although I love Alan Parsons Project in general and Andrew Powells score in particular I don't feel it fit the movie AT ALL. Its purely SciFi music, not fantasy IMO. But I agree with you, It def should have been on the list, it was bigger and better than some of the ones mentioned.

What an awesome experience The Dark Crystal was in the cinema. Truly a masterpiece of puppetry and story telling by the greats Jim Henson and Frank Oz. And "Dark" being the operative word lol that scene where the Skeksis are mercilessly draining the life essence from some unfortunate Podling was pretty dark for kids like me accustomed to watching The Muppets and Sesame Street. Lord of the Rings movies did not "avoid nude tropes from Sword-and-Sorcery", it was not an SnS movie but a classic Fantasy movie. SnS is usually based on a bronze/iron/Hellenistic/Roman-age technology level. For that reason, they dress in Celtic, Germanic (the barbarians), Greek, and Roman tradition, while proper Fantasy movies are set in a middle-age-like environment with a more prominent archery and sophisticated armor and dresses. While there is nothing wrong with the "nude trope", it doesn't come from the SnS trend, but it started the decades before with the Peplum trend (Sword-and-Sandal), made of movies with an almost identical style but strictly based on ancient Mythology, again, following the Classic era esthetic you can see in ancient statues. Schwarzenegger was chosen cause he was Mr.Olympia, Olympia name is a Greek reference... you see how it all adds up. In that sense, 300 would be more of a Sword-and-Sorcery movie than LotR, cause there is some magic in it.

@@TheRusty What is interesting is that in the Lord of the Rings animatied version from the '70, they depitc the orcs with barbarian pelts and Aragorn with a Roman tunic (nude legs, not pants), so you could say it's borderline SnS, but the hobbits look like from the 1800.

Kinda surprised that you didn't list The Black Cauldron. That has a lot of Swords & Sorcery elements, even if it was one of Disney's weaker animated movies. Also, I'm pretty sure Roger Corman wasn't involved with Fire & Ice. The '80s was such an awesome time for the fantasy genre in general. Some of the ones that weren't mentioned because they didn't have very many S&S elements, if any at all, were The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Return To Oz, The Neverending Story, The Princess Bride, Legend, Ladyhawke, Highlander, Time Bandits, The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen, The Last Unicorn, The Flight Of Dragons, The Secret Of NIMH, and if you want to get into obscure anime territory, there's the Unico movies, The Fantastic Adventures Of Unico and Unico In The Island Of Magic.

The story goes that Arnold was in Red Sonia as a favorite to De Laurentiis. But he only filmed for a week and he didn't realize that he was a major character until he saw the movie. This was great! I'm happy to say that, with the exception of Black Angel, I've seen every movie you featured in these two vids (some just work the last couple of years), and own several of them. I enjoyed every one of them, but the two that have really stuck with me are two of the most unlikely: Hawk the Slayer and Krull. I won't apologize for that. I love both movies dearly. Hawk was directly responsible for me getting into D&D (we're playing tomorrow, in fact). My wife is a chemist, and when we were planning our wedding she did some research to see if there was a way to safely replicate the "I give fire to water" wedding scene in Krull. Sadly, there was no way of doing it with real fire that wouldn't put one or both of us in the hospital. It was still a fun idea, though!

Krull is also one of the movies vividly remember from that time - I think it came out after Return of the Jedi (at least I saw it after that) and caused quite a bit of confusion with me at first because I imagined it to be an Anakin Skywalker origin story (because of the prophecy that the son of the hero and heroine would rule the galaxy). For some time I thought it's a movie just finding it hard to decide what it is - sci-fi or fantasy - when it's actually quite a clever mixture of the two: It's the story of a medieval planet fighting off a space invasion; they have no way of knowing what a spaceship is and how fast it can be so it's a black fortress that teleports from one place to the next. It's one pof my favorites of all time, still today, not least because of the music. Fun fact: The lead actor of this movie later had a recurring role in Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, as Michael Eddington, a Starfleet officer gone rogue.

I know this was video on films released in theaters or straight to video, but the influence of the long-running television series Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess on the continuance and ultimate resurgence of the Sword and Sorcery genre should be recognized. Most of the later properties you mentioned, except LOTR, Hobbit, etc. are on the small screen. Plus, Hercules started in a series of monthly made-for-TV films before it became a series (packaged under the "Action Pack" brand with other properties such as "TekWar".)

I feel like it needs to be said that Excalibur didn’t introduce Helen Mirren. She had already established herself in films in the 70s.

Excalibur was not Helen Mirren's start. She was in 6 movies before that, the first was A Midsummer Nights Dream in 1968.

Great two part series! Lots of fun remembering or learning about these movies. I agree that Legend is definitely missing from the list.

The S@S genre never really went away at all, it continued right on through the 90's with tv series Beastmaster, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Zena: Princess Warrior, Mortal Kombat: Conquest, Highlander, Highlander: The Raven. Hardly gone nor forgotten. Highlander alone had three movies in the 90's. There was also Kull: The Conqueror, Dragonheart, Merlin, Beastmaster 2 @ 3, Deathstalker 4, Barbarian Queen, Prince Valiant, Dragonworld, and the list goes on and on. Hardly a dead or dying genre, if anything it was more alive in the 90's than it was in the 80's. LotR was just the largest budget Sword and Sorcery ever made and pretty killed the genre for the next decade, quiet the opposite of revitalizing it.

One of the best TV nights in the 80's: Double bill of Dragonslayer and Krull. Also, televisions were cheap enough to get one in my own room.

I have a memory from when I was a kid in the 80s of a man in a desert who comes across a giant mirror that reaches across a huge distance tricking travellers from thinking that it is just more desert ahead. Does this ring a bell to anyone?

Ron Moss (from Bold & the Beautiful) & Tanya Roberts (Beastmaster) starred in “I paladini - Storia d'armi e d'amori” (1983) (“Hearts & Armour” in badly dubbed English) - a spaghetti S&S movie that’s fun to watch.

Hercules Against the Moon Men (1965) Granted, many of the best are from the 1980's, but many of the worst came from the 1980's, too. These others I mentioned are worthy as well. I know this video focused on the 1980's, but check out these others if anyone reading this is not aware of them! PS: Regarding the debate over what IS a Sword and Sorcery film, and what is NOT a Sword and Sorcery film... My opinion?... Well, if the film has swords... and it also has sorcery ... Then it is a Sword and Sorcery film... Pretty simple, really!
