Barbie would love this house! And Sophia loves pink and pink! With simple and inexpensive means, she transformed a dusty and drab 70s house into a modern and colorful boho dream. All the steps of her renovations on the way to her dream home have been documented by DIY queen Sophia aka Goldie on her Instagram channel @goldielovespink.
Sophia and her husband have been living in their own home in the Stuttgart area for two and a half years now. Where once rustic oak set the tone, everything now shines in soft green, vibrant pink, soft pink and refreshing blue. Core renovation? Not a chance. Sophia had no desire to live on a dusty construction site for years. And she wanted to do a lot of things herself DIY-style to save money. That's why her construction projects are called: Vinyl stickers and chalkboard paint. It saves a lot of work and money, and the senior charm is still blown away. Little by little, Sophia and her husband have now worked their way around the house and given the rooms a makeover.
The main challenge was the old tile floors in the house. Sophia's solution to this: simply paint over the tiles. This saved her a lot of dirt, work and, above all, money. Nevertheless, this DIY hack does not mean little effort, because the old tile floor must first be thoroughly cleaned and freed from grease and dirt residues. Then follows a coat of adhesive primer, then the actual color varnish with one or two layers and then still a sealant. In all this must be done extremely carefully and cleanly, otherwise every little hair or speck of dust will remain visible on the tiles. Also, the joints must actually be taped with a special tape, so that you do not see directly that the tiles are painted over. Depending on the edge of the individual tile, this can be a real fiddly job. Sophia didn't feel like doing that and painted her tiles in a checkerboard look. That way, the grout lines play off each other. She is very happy with the result: Even after two years of use, her tile floor still has no quirks.
In this way, Sophia also gave her outdated kitchen a completely new look and transformed it into a modern stylish kitchen for around 1,000 euros in material costs. Continuing to use the old kitchen cabinets and tiles is also very sustainable.
Chalk paint, of which Sophia is a big fan, was also used in many other places in the house. For example, she also painted wall tiles in the bathroom, cabinets, wood paneling and all the doors that once came in rustic oak with chalk paint. Sanding is not necessary here. This again saves a lot of time. She also simply wielded a paintbrush on yellowed radiators and old window sills.
Sophia draws inspiration for the design of her living spaces from English cottages, the hippie era and Pinterest. She then often looks for and finds most of her furniture and furnishings on eBay classifieds or in bulky waste. And then she also likes to give them a fresh coat of chalkboard paint.
