Thank you Jim. I spotted this video earlier on today but I kept it as a special treat for later and I haven't been disappointed. Thirty minutes of sheer pleasure and a stunning finished work of art. There's no limit to what can be achieved in wood turning. You've inspired me to push on and be more adventurous. I've only just got back into my workshop full- time as I spent the last few months working in the garden. I'm working on a pair of candlesticks and am looking forward to using Yorkshire Grit tomorrow for the first time. Once again thank you so much and I look forward to more uploads from you. Best.... Alan.

Hi Jim Just watched it a second time and have a tip for you. If you set the branch wood in the recess using jewellery cement which is colourless you won't need such a large amount of resin and pigment, only enough to put into the gaps. I have used this technique a lot and have found it easy to work with. Great video.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
I think if I did this project again I don't think I would cement them in place first, I would set them with the copper resin as I went along, as some of the gaps were very narrow and filling them afterwards with the thick resin was very difficult to do without leaving voids. Thanks David. Cheers, Jim.

With it having copper powder, will it tarnish like actual piece of copper?
@JimsonMakes7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Tracy. Yes the copper will tarnish, although the wax finish will help prevent this. You could also us a lacquer. There are solutions you can paint on to encourage tarnishing to create a verdigris finish.

Nice Bowl. I like the choice of colours and materials that you use. I wanted to let you know about a few methods to increase your efficiency in regards to working with resins. Place the resin bottles in a warm water bath 15 -20 minutes before use. It makes them flow a lot better and they mix easier. When you are adding pigment or copper to the resin add it to Part A only, not both. This way you can spend more time mixing the pigment or metals into the resin before it starts to harden. Once it is thoroughly mixed into part A, then add Part B and mix thoroughly. This increases your working time dramatically. I hope this helps. Thanks for posting the videos.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jean-Marc. With some resins I use a baby bottle warmer, but it does then accelerate the set. The working time with this resin is 75 minutes so I am not in a hurry. With this technique I have to add so much powder that it would make the final mixing difficult and may impair a good mix. I appreciate what you are saying, I have done a lot of resin work and use your techniques with some. All the best, Jim

I love your bowl, will definitely try it. You make it look so easy. I am surprised the epoxy did not pull from the edges, once turned. Can you expand on the Yorkshire Grit please. Thank you
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Beverley, the wood is very dry and stable and the epoxy sticks incredibly well. Heavily filled epoxy like this is very dimensionally stable on setting. Yorkshire Grit is a woodturners abrasive paste which I use on a lot of my work, it starts off quite coarse and gets finer and finer as you work it. In the end you get a very fine finish. All the best, Jim.

Beautiful work! I came over from Peter Brown's channel and your work is stunning! I wanted to also comment on the comments about your videos needing music or commentary. While commentary would be nice for educational purposes, I find that long winded forced commentary actually takes away from the video and becomes annoying. Music is nice but most of the music KZbinrs use is the royalty free stuff that is just ghastly! It's grating to listen to and very very repetitive. I enjoy listening to the sound of the lathe and just relaxing while watching you create! This is just my humble opinion and I doubt that I am your target audience. Never the less, your work is amazing and I've subscribed so I can see what your next creations are! Be well!

I love the twig effect. I have heard you should not add more than 10% of coloring to an epoxy or it will cause problems. But looks like it worked for you. Thanks for showing it.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike, I think the 10% rule applies to liquid colours, dry powders should not cause a problem as long as they are mixed in well. The trick with the metal powders is to add as much as you can and still have a workable consistency. The liquid additives can Make the resin too runny and alter the setting characteristics. Some people even add a little bit of pure acetone to epoxy when using it a as a varnish. Cheers, Jim

@MarkDurbin8 жыл бұрын
That's really nice, I love the way it came together. I use copper/brass powder on my 3D prints (I've never tried it on my wood turning) the brass always looks the best. I get the most shiny results when I burnish it with a harder metal part after I've finished with the abrasive. I don't know if this would have given you a more "metal" like finish than the burnishing powder. I've also mixed the copper and brass powder to quite good effect.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark. Burnishing with metal or wire wool did cross my mind but I didn't want to spoil the wood component. I agree that brass seems to work best but I think bronze is my favourite. All the best, Jim

I've had very poor results with wire wool and it tends to mark adjacent areas, particularly oak (iron and oak are not good together) I have ruined an oak bowl with wire wool. I think when you use something like the back of a spoon, it stretches the exposed metal particles over the surface (at the microscopic level), but has very little effect on the surrounding area. I suppose you'd have to be careful with the softer wood surrounding the inlay, but I wouldn't expect that a gentle rub with the back of a spoon would effect the oak. When I do it, I'm using a relatively soft plastic underneath and the only thing I have to be careful of is heating it with friction (forgetting it's not metal). Anyway, I'm sure it looks pretty good just as it is. Cheers, Mark.

Yes I agree, wire wool is not great and definitely to avoided with oak. I find the fibres get stuck in everything ! I have used fine wire wool on bronze castings in the past, and that is ok. All the best, Jim
