BEAT INSTRUMENTAL #57 - SYD BARRETT GUITARIST OF THE MONTH - OCTOBER,1967. Quotes by SYD BARRETT - ''A couple of months ago, I spashed out a couple of hundred on a new Guitar, but I still seem to use that first one (Julien's note: The Guitar was Syd's famed Fender Esquire). It's been painted several times, and once I even covered it in plastic sheeting and silver discs. Those discs are still on the Guitar, but they tend to look a bit worn. I haven't changed anything on it, except that I occasionally adjust the pickups when I need a different sound. Who are my idols? Well, Steve Cropper is an obvious choice, and so is Bo Diddley. In the old days, he was a great influence on both me and the group. No, I don't think they influence me now. At least, I'm not conscious of it. @@thomascraymer8712 First indications something was off with Syd started to surface around mid-1967, perhaps in the spring of that year. I don't think it became a serious problem until late summer/fall of '67, after the release of TPATGOD, but what happened to Syd was VERY real. I saw a recent interview with Roger Waters from only a few years back. Syd's demise was devastating to the band. @@jamesaron1967 Yeah I can agree there, the first indications were probably that spring/summer, but there was also the "lost weekend" (mid-summer perhaps?), and the fact that people would be constantly spiking his drinks. So the idea that Syd was unable to perform any more is very much an exaggeration. That said, I do hope footage of PF with both Syd and David surfaces! Would certainly be interesting to hear

Barrett is awesome, great songs, like Wolfpack, Rats, Baby Lemonade and Love Song. Perfect album!!! Opel is so dark, full of great moments and have my favorite song from Syd, Milky Way. The crazy diamond will live forever in our hearts. Was a pleasure to talk about Syd with you. See ya.

FERNANDO MARINELLI madcap laughs genuinely saved my life. Yeah the whole point of the sound was that it was unrefined. Random precision. Syds songs were more art than constructed musical pieces. No man's land is my favourite on the album, and Terrapin was the first song I learnt to play on the guitar. My favourite song that Syd wrote is Jugband Blues though. Or candy and a current bun because that one was sexual AF lol. I just don't like people assuming that he was schizophrenic and throwing that diagnosis out when in fact it's more likely that he was eccentric. After all, he was an artist.

Obviously, Syd’s mime performance is set at an engagement level of about 2.5 out of ten. Which was about as much as could be hoped for by this stage. But does anyone else think that it’s Nick’s miming that seems almost deliberately out of sync with the track? He’s hitting that cymbal BETWEEN the cymbal strikes on the track. Weird.

The interviewer should have won a prize for inanity. Even by sixties standards, this is über-crass. You've just been listening to absolutely unique music and what do you ask? "Waddya think about American food?" The lads all bravely toe the line like good English middle-class kids do and give polite answers, including Syd. No, Syd did not look out of it at all - he looked typical Syd. He certainly looked pissed off with having to mime, and being asked daft questions though.

It breaks my heart so much because it's Pink Floyd and of course is Syd there but if you see his eyes he is not there anymore and it looks like his soul was gone. As somebody said, he has an empty look...

Lipsynching is Utter Cancer. Here we have a legendary, talented band in it's short-lived lineup with its original singer with so little existing footage from this era... and we don't even get a real performance, just them awkwardly trying to match with a pre-recorded tape.

MELODY MAKER AUGUST 5,1967. INTERVIEW WITH ROGER WATERS BY CHRIS WELCH. Quotes by ROGER WATERS - ''We're being frustrated, at the moment, by the fact that to stay alive we have to play lots and lots of places and venues that are not really suitable. This can't last obviously and we're hoping to create our own venues.'' '' We all like our music. That's the only driving force behind us. All the trappings of becoming vaguely successful like being able to buy bigger amplifiers - none of that stuff is really important.'' ''We've had problems with our equipment and we can't get the P.A. to work because we play extremely loud. It's a pity because Syd writes great lyrics and nobody ever hears him.''

It is not generally known that all the members of The Pink Floyd contracted venereal diseases during their '67 American Tour! Another note is that Syd Barrett had his hair permed at an unknown "Vidal Sassoon" beauty salon and they didn't do a very good job as evidenced in this clip.

In an era when all the artists we're taking LSD & trying to make songs that mirrored the experience of it. It was this apperance by "The Pink Floyd" that made people go "Wait & minute, this song is on another frequency, it's very unusual, this Syd guy is out of his mind" Dick Clark wants no part of Syd when he talks to the band, lol.........Syd was a true Genius 🥰 RIP Syd & Rick, another true Genius 🥰

Katya Lavrentyeva Richard William "Rick" Wright was such a soft spoken gentleman! He had such a humble and sweet demeanor. I just can't believe Roger Waters would ever have considered firing Rick! But he did! Rick Wright is my all~time favorite Pop/Rock Organist! Rick's various solos on "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" are so Psychedelic and mesmerizing! Rick's solo on the "Live At Pompeii" is especially gripping. But, I must say, Wright's solo on "Scream Thy Last Scream (Old Woman With A Casket) just blows my mind!

Nick Mason said these kinds of TV show performances were mimed (lip synced) and they hated to do this kind of thing. You can tell how bad the lip sync is on this one, and they have no microphones so there's that.

There is one point where Roger is clearly looking over at Syd with a look in his eyes that says “wtf dude?”. Then there is the twitch that Syd does when giving that hollow stare like he just saw a demon in the audience for a second. But then there is Nick Mason who seems to be having a blast half-assing his part comically. You can tell that they all think doing panto is lame but Nick and Rick are the only ones having fun with it. Which seems to fit their personalities. Roger, is well, Roger. That could be his I’m-having-fun-face, no one knows. Then there’s Syd. Or more accurately there is Syd’s body and the one small part of his brain still in control of body function that usually doesn’t control body function.
