One of the most "unbeatable" records in track history may actually be under threat. It's time to prepare for the world record assault of Femke Bol.

I think right now she won't break 51, but she has the ability to run below 50.68, potentially below 50.5. Sydney started using the 14 strides between hurdles in 2021, which is when she went from 52 to sub 51.5. She was doing 5 hurdles at 14 and 5 at 15, then last year when she ran 50.68 she did 14 for 7 and 15 for the final 3 hurdles. Bol has just this year switched to a 14 stride pattern (7 at 14 and 3 at 15 like Sydney) and she's already improving massively, she's got more a lot of improvement left as she really gets efficient with the 14 strides. In terms of breaking the world record, she will probably have to switch to 14 for all 10 hurdles, but she has the endurance for it as can be seen by her indoor 500 WR. The real question is whether Sydney comes back to the hurdles and can do 14 for 10 before her and lower the WR more, which could happen. Sydney is working on her flat speed right now, if she can bring that flat speed to the hurdles and also incorporate a full 14 stride pattern, she could run a lot quicker, maybe even break 50 (unlikely but it's not impossible).

The dutch commentator for the 51'45 clocking said she's doing 6 hurdles om 14 strides and 4 hurdles on 15. so still 4 to play with, but don't know if she can still accelerate then, what shz clearly did now over the last 2 hurdles, after hurdle 10 her lead grew again very substantial while the rest was fading.
@Keepdapocket11 ай бұрын
@@Tyrone1957his analysis is correct, however, it all depends on the person. Take Warholm vs Benjamin, for instance. Your turnover must remain “somewhat” the same. In the 300/400 hurdles, you tend to get a “rhythm” and not deviate from that; which in turn could affect your turnover. Warholm just goes. He alternate legs, but his turnover never changes. IF Sydney goes back to the hurdles, don’t be surprised if you see a couple of hurdles with a 13 stride. Her training for this open 400 will unlock a turnover she never had before. It will allow her to just run. She already can alternate, and she is a more natural sprinter than Femke.

Solid analysis, great job! I believe the 10x14 sounds unlikely and maybe 7x14 + 3x15 is more likely, but I think she could lower her PB to 51.0x over time this year. She should still win Worlds in 400h, as Sydney is likely too outta shape/habit to run that now, but Sydney will grab the 400 in 48.5x instead. Next year is the really interesting 400h - Will Syd return to fight or give up and go for the 47.60 in the 400.

Maybe but in a few years, with a lot of 400 flat experience under her belt, I expect Syd to blow the lid off both events. 46 flat and 48 hurdles. Bol's years of running the flat are paying dividends. She might be capable going under 51 seconds but there is the factor of season end fatigue so she might just don't push it that hard. The Diamond League is in the bag regardless. We have all kinds of conflicting information about Syd because now she has a bum knee ( serious enough to skip the entire season) and the possible switch to flat. Before anyone gets excited, the double is not possible in Paris for neither athlete unless they wanna be 6th or 7th in that given race. Femke already said that she will not pursue the flat individually and knowing the fact that both athletes will be asked to run in the relays, the added workload for a second individual race would make it nearly impossible to be competitive in either one. So we might never gonna find out what these two would do against each other in an Olympic final. But we can always hope....

Actually, the 400 hurdles is now Femke Bol's primary event. She is relatively new to hurdles. She was a 400 sprinter. McLaughlin has been hurdling most of her life. The key is 14-stepping between the hurdles. McLaughlin was the first to do it. Bol is 6'0" compared to McLaughlin who is 5'9". Bol is hurdling with both lead legs for the first time (a requirement for 14-stepping). Bol has an outside shot of breaking 50 seconds if she can 14-step through all 10 hurdles. She most likely will not do it this year, but it may come as she gets more fluid with 14-steps and gains more strength. However, she has got to gain more strength. McLaughlin made her big jump when she switched coaches. Bob Kersee is big on strength and power. That's why McLaughlin's physique changed so much.

Reckon the biggest benefit Femke has in comparison to Sydney is her length, especially with her newly introduced 14 strides between the hurdles. It should give her, in theory, less of an effort to go beyond the 7 she did this race. Also even I can see her race was far from flawless, so even if she stays at the 7 hurdles, there's definitely 'easy' time to be gained. Would love to see Bol take the record someday, but currently it would take running .20 faster for each 100m split -- that's a huge jump. Not sure where the .77 could be found, strategy-wise. Also, there's far too much blase expectation for WRs in the YT track community. It's like people don't even get what a statistical aberration a WR actually is. You don't just pop them out. Sometimes they can be around for decades and decades. Running very fast times does not automatically put you in WR conversation territory. A better discussion would be: "Can Bol break 51"?

It can be found the same way Syd found it by decreasing her strides between more hurdles. She just started a 14 stride pattern this year.
@Dave-lr2wo11 ай бұрын
@@veridicusmaximus6010 I don't offhand know what Bol's stride pattern is, but "decreasing" the number of steps is not really the core of it. Decreasing steps means that the athlete is arriving at the hurdle N+1 steps *earlier*, which is a function of speed (which is a itself function of stride length and frequency). So, objectively, simply reducing the number of steps isn't faster unless it's a function of speed -- i.e., you can't "stretch" the stride to the hurdle for the sake of being there in fewer steps. That will always be slower. (This can often be seen at the prep 110HH level, where novice athletes are trying to go from 5 steps to 3). There's only one route to fewer steps and that's being faster.

If not talk to her coach and ask why they switched to a 14 stride pattern this year just like Syd did 3 years ago and why all of sudden she smashed he 52 sec. PB. But ok you believe whatever! Yes, 51.45 is not close to 50.68, although I don't consider 0.77s to be "nearly a full second" (which sounds like 0.9s in my head). The reason people are even entertaining the thought is that Sydney went from almost the same time to her WR time in 1 month. Sure, it's unlikely that Bol can pull of the same improvement this fast, but the only point of reference we have is Sydney and she is the same age and both are huge talents. (plus: it's a YT athletics video, about 99% of these are over-hyping or over-dramatic)
@bjf502711 ай бұрын
@@_MicZ_ .77 is totally "nearly a full second". It's more than three-quarters which most would qualify as "nearly". That being said, Femke has no chance of shaving off that much time. Sydney did this because she is truly one of a kind. Not to mention Femke is a year older than Sydney was when she set the world record. It ain't happening. Oh, and who said Sydney won't come back and smash her own record?

@@bjf5027 What is or isn't "nearly a full second" is subjective, which is why I referenced what it sounded like to me. Other than that, saying Femke can't shave off that much time and Sydney can because "she is truly one of a kind" is just bias, there is no proof of why Femke couldn't do the same. "Not to mention Femke is a year older than Sydney was when she set the world record." ... Why would a year make a difference between two 23 year old athletes ? Most athletes peak much later in life. Also: Femke is actually nearly 7 months younger than Sydney and the WR was run in August, so according to your previous logic that's "nearly a year". "Oh, and who said Sydney won't come back and smash her own record?" ... I don't know, sure as hell wasn't me.

Sorry, I had to smile a bit about the "many consider the 400mH to be Bol's main event", all that matters is what Femke considers her main event and she is very clear about her love for the 400mH. I think that because a large part of the world doesn't really do indoor seasons, it might seem weird for her to run so many indoor 400m races. The Netherlands (and most of Europe) has a shorter outdoor season (because of the more cold/wet weather) and since there's no such thing as an indoor 400mH, she competes in the 400m (just like Karsten Warholm btw). As for the WR, I don't think she'll be able to get there this season and maybe not even next season. What I find more interesting is that Sydney might try the double in Paris and Femke has stated she probably won't do that, so if she comes close to Sydney's WR and Sydney is a bit more tired because of the double, the 400mH might be very interesting indeed...

One of my pet peeve is when people reference indoor times to compare an outdoor performance. 400m indoors and 400m outdoors are two totally different disciplines they aren’t even ran on the same track. Also, elite athletes usually don’t compete indoors so the record is soft.
@Vinchiamo11 ай бұрын
The indoor 400m wasn't a soft record, as it had stood for 41 years being held by Jarmila Kratochvilova who is the 2nd fastest 400m outdoor runner of all time with a 47.99 PB. Before Bol broke it, the previous top ten Indoor 400m times were held by Olympic and World Champ winners and placegetters including Shaunea Miller Uibo.
@sultanaalis11 ай бұрын
@@Vinchiamo A soft record that’s why it stood for a long time because elite athletes rarely participated indoor especially in championship years because they don’t want to peak twice and it can affect their outdoor peak (they prioritize outdoor). Funny you mention Jamila, not you making my point. Jamila the 800m record holder had the 400m indoor record in an era with Koch the 400m world record holder, Koch rarely competed indoors. 49.2s is a very very good time for 400m indoor but the old WR was “obliterated” because it was soft, it wasn’t competitive. Same thing happened in the women’s 400mh before Syd, Bol and Dalilah.

Her 400m WL time shows it. Going 48.75s. Bol has broken the 49s at the 400m. And she only 4th fastest this year. You still got Paulino who went 48.98s and another young american whonis faster than her at the 400m. Sydney will break 400m hurdles wr by a mile will go 49.90+s. Bol will go 51.10+s PB and they will both run only the 400m hurdles. Paulino will win again the 400m without Sydney to challenge her and Bol. But Olympics i can see Sydney and Bol go double 400m and 400m hurdles being more confident. But Sydney will need to smash the 400m hurdles again and distance herself by miles to consider this.
