Sharath and Amy, one of your most fun videos yet. Couldn’t make the first, but I did walk from my house on Victoria Stroad West Ryde, onto a train bound for Epping (that didn’t stop at Denistone) and took the Metro all the way to Sydenham and back. Love the station designs. Gadigal is impressive. Heard the tiled patterns at each end are connected. Wish they’d made a tunnel connect to Town Hall so they’d be yet another exit to be confused by.
@BigBlueMan1184 ай бұрын
The whole point is they are trying to discourage people from using town hall, it’s an awful station which simply cannot handle the traffic it sees. That’s why this line and the new metro west avoid any connection to town hall and will look to spread passengers around the city more evenly, the light rail assists with that job too. Hopefully future lines like a northern beaches metro will avoid interacting with town hall completely.

@perhapsme9884 ай бұрын
I'm an oldie.. Congratulations on the video. Metro seems very popular for several reasons. 1) Much shorter commute to work and the City. 2) Frequent services. 3) Autonomus train. 4) Station designs. 5) Crowding. 6) Likeky more housing near stations. I somehow have to dampen the enthusiasm. 1) The lot fewer stations than perhaps needed between Chatswood and the CITY is a 'cheat' to hasten the trip. It means.. Fewer people benefit from it. Higher government subisides (to the operator). 2) Higher frequency of services. Already the dwell time is set at 90 seconds, longer than envisaged. If the Metro line becomes even more patronised due to higher population in next few decades, the dwell time will be even longer. The frequency of services especially during peak hours would be smaller. (But the cheating with fewer stations than needed might mitigate this) The main reason that the existing train line is slow during peak hours is this. Town Hall and Wynyard especially Town Hall station have platforms that are vrry skinny. The lifts and escalators and stairs take up a lot of space. So passenger movements on platforms is snail slow. It was so more than 50 years ago, it is still so now. That's why train sits at Town Hall and Wynyard for miniutes instead of seconds like in other stations. Its the desing fault. This also means the on-time performance is affected. Thats why it is PURPOSELY created that time buffer at some large stations where train would not move for 2 or longer minutes though the track ahead is clear. (Chatswood and North Sydeny for the North Shore line, eg) This is cheating. Victoria or Melbourne network first introduced this in 1990's. From Hornsby to Wynyard, it used to be 40 minutes for decades. These days, it is 45 minutes. (Only in Australia, politicians slow down train services and the electorate let them get away with it). My bet is that sooner or later this 'buffer' phantom stops would apply to the Metro. Precedents have been set, so copies will happen. 3) No driver train. Well, this is an anti-union measure. Perhaps this is not something important but it is. Every time i use Metro train, it seems there are platform staff when there is no need. After all, the glass barriers are there. The driver isnt there to decide when to drive off or not. So why the heck with platform staff in large number? Or these staff are not unionised? 4) Station designs have impressed most. Vs the existing stations, of course they are wonderful. In the past, designs for stations are utilitarian in philosophy. Indeed there isnt even considerations for access for less mobile people. Town Hall station, eg, didnt get any lift till just before Sydeny Olympics. Modern stations are usually bright, cavernous and full of amenities that eg Bondi Junction station does not even have though it is not even 40 years old. Modernity in many things is good. But please do not judge the past too much. 5) Crowding in existing network is a major issue. Bit this could be markedly mitigated by one approach. 10 carriages instead of 8. 10 means 25% highrr capacity over 8 carriages. Platforms then need to be lengthened for major stations. Not for all. This has been done before. Till early 1980's, 2 carriages were the norm for off-peak services. In 1977, one evening just before 7pm, at Town Hall, i saw a 4 car train split into 2. A worker actually jumped onto the track, decoupled the two front ones from the back 2 cars. The back 2 went back to North Sydeny for overnight stay. The front ones continued its long trip to Penrith/Emu Plains. North Shore line didnt get full 8 car services till early 2000's. Even on weekdays. Crowding could be lessened by adding carriages from 8 to 10. Some would laugh at this because all platforms other than those for long distance services have 8 car length only. But this could be done with platform extensions for large stations. Town Hall, Wynyard, Central, Martin Place, Curcular Quay and perhaps others are the candidates for platform extensions. By doing so, new designs for Town Hall and Wynyard, the 2 main bottlenecks for the network coulf be rebuilt. Wider platforms, longer platforms and more exists and entrances leading away from the station. This would speed up passenger movements for much reduced dwell time for trains at the station. So instesd of just 6 services per hour during peak hours, eg, 8 or more could be reached. This would greatly improve the network. For bulk of stations, just move the signal posts. No need for platform extensions. Most would learn which end of train NOT to travel for their destination over time. (Many Central Coast line stations have short platforms. People are fine with it.) Metro lines perhaps haven't taken this into consideration yet. Thet haven't learned the obvious lesson. Shame this is so. 6) More housing above Metro stations. This is NOT a good solution to the housing affordability issue, ironically. The Hills district was opened up more than 30 years ago for housing to alleviate the cost issue. The Hills were not the only district. Penrith way too in the 1970's. Campbelltown in recent decades too. They had one thing in common. When they were first planned and developed, they were lot cheaper than most other parts of Sydeny. This offered, ON AVERAGE, more affordable housing options than buying into existing districts. The Metro-linked housing, on the orher hand, is and will be in locationd that are already expensive. From Castle Hill to Sydenham, there is no Inexpensive offerings like those west of Parramatta at all. Units east of Parramatta in Sydeny Metro tend to be more expensive. So why would Metro-linked apartment blocks would be helping to reduce housing cost, on average? I did my HSC at Chatswood High in 1979. 5 years later, one guy in my form bought a land out in Penrith (THE Campbelltown of those days) for a new house. He had a job with the defence facility at St Mary's. He was from Lindfield and kids ar school knew his mum as a snob. But he could afford, on salary for government job for a recent graduate, to buy a land and build a house there. How many young graduates could do the same for a unit along the Metro line let along a house in Penrith these days? Its not the NUMBER of supplies. Its the LOCATIONS of new housing supplies that is the crux. Till these last 20 years, we had bulk of new supplies in less expensive and often very cheap locations. Young people and first home buyers could afford them if they have a steady job. But these days, the bulk of new supplies are in expensive parts of Inner Ring of Sydeny Metropolitan. And in parts like Castle Hills. Lot fewer apartment blocks are built beyond Parramatta where it is much cheaper. So the average offerings are in expensive parts already. 7) Catch a train from Hornsby to Richmond, you would know what i mean. Down the North Shore, lots of apartment blocks. Through Inner West, too. Strathfield to Parramatta have been transformed to apartment blocks. But past Parramatta, it is different housing type markedly contrasting the recent offerings to the east of Parramatta. From Blacktown to Richmond, lots of empty lands. Why are they empty? Plesse do this Hornsby to Richmond train ride. Not quite 3 hours. At Richmond there is a Maccss next to the station, you could get a lunch. Likely you could get on the same carriage of the same train back to Hornsby. You would then understand what i mean by it's the LOCATIONS of housing supllies that has been changed in these last 20 off years that has created the housing affordability issue. It's very naive to think that Metro -linked housing would reduce housing affordability crisis. I am an oldie. Ive seen a lot. Realties arent what they are. Politicians and the political class haven't been always clear for the logic about the constant emphasis on housing supplies in already expensive parts of Sydeny. Metro lines are nice. But its not the panacea or indeed it would get worse with time. Thanks for reading this long note or rant.
@kevincen57274 ай бұрын
Hi PerhapsMe, great effort putting all the thoughts together - I'm with you on issue No1 and No4, but rest of the area including the housing one belongs to some more complex problem and we cant rely on 1 metro line to solve them all. All I'm believing this is a positive increment to a better city

Hi Sharath and Amy. I absolutely love this video, especially the "sad" part showing your "devastation" when the Merto extension didn't open on 4/8/24!!! However, this was then followed by celebration and the "real" opening on 19/8/24. Incidentally, if they had opened it just a day earlier, they would have hit on my birthday, which would have been quite interesting. It is strange seeing the older part of Martin Place Station now with the Eastern Suburbs Railway. I remember traveling on the Eastern Suburbs Railway on opening day back in 1979 and seeing Martin Place Station for the first time. At the time, I thought it was absolutely super futuristic. Something I still think is worth considering is more stations on the North Shore. I'm thinking suburbs without existing heavy rail like Wiloughby, St Ives, Frenches Forest, Belrose, with maybe new platforms at Gordon for new metro platforms. Considering Gordon is already marked by the Government for up-zoning and larger buildings I, plus it's got the T1 and T9 lines running through, it's definitely worth considering for a metro extension. Obviously NIMBY's wouldn't be happy, but I mean this is in a perfect world. I've never rly seen anyone mention these suburbs when it comes to metro extensions so would be keen to hear your thoughts!

Fun fact... 13hours after this was uploaded it was not set as available by the nsw department of education. I was checking for a video at school on my school laptop and there was no new uploads 😭

I can beat this. I was on the Blue Cow ski tube on its first day 29.8.88 but it was a bus instead of the train. Construction was so far behind schedule they ran crappy buses and we were jammed in them. This country has a long and pathetic history of stuffing up large infrastructure projects, which continues today. Examples everywhere.

I did Chatswood to Barangaroo on Tuesday, so not as exciting as opening day, but cool nonetheless. One question for Sharath, does the metro harbour tunnel have less emergency lighting than the conventional/old tunnels? I felt i could see a lot less of the sides than in other Sydney rail tunnels
