Was he also checked out as a husband? A neighbor described him as a total jerk. Brenda spent an inordinate amount of time at work and sacrificed her special family time (Xmas Eve) to help. Yes that makes her a wonderful person but that is a red flag to me. How did Brenda miss all the signs that something was wrong? She has the 360 App But all she does is pressure her about not losing the scholarship. Why doesn't she get in the dam car and drive 30 minutes? I think Brenda was furious when she confronted Sidney and let her have it. In turn, I believe Sidney became enraged. To her it was a betrayal that her mom didn't understand that she was drowning. She snapped from what I believe was years of anger built up toward tone-deaf Brenda and absentee dad. But she was not psychotic.

A person who had a psychotic break and brutally murdered a family member, supposedly the closest person to her in the world, was let out even as they were still tweaking her medication. I don't think she was schizophrenic. Though my opinion means nothing. But because she then staged a crime scene. And she was researching how long it takes to bleed out before the murders, and other topics when she was staying in hotels. I think she had a fit of rage when her perfect image of herself was challenged when her mother got on the phone to talk to her college. Then she killed her. Her tears have swayed the court. That separates her from other family annihilators. If she was a male who did not cry constantly and did not look a mess, this would be LWOP. She mutilated her own mother and then tried to cover it up. Her gender and in-court behaviour should have had no bearing on her sentence. Ridiculous. One more thing: I am Canadian and, horribly, she would be out in 2-3 years, probably. Our penal system does not believe in punishment but only rehabilitation. She would have only to participate in counseling and keep her nose clean - I have seen terrible criminals receive minimal sentences only to get released almost immediately. Again, ridiculous.

She should share a cell with Chandler Halderson. They are two Peas in a pod. He did exactly the same thing for the same reason only he shot both of his parents. I don’t buy all of these lamé stories about how she is so very mentally ill and didn’t know what she was doing. It all goes to “presence of mind”. Pretending to be her own mother when her school called back on the phone. She had to find the cast iron skillet in the kitchen. Then, did she run back up Stairs and get a stake knife? I rather doubt that her parents kept a collection in their bedroom. After her dad notified her that the police were on the way, staging the crime scene, by going outside and breaking the window from the outside so that the glass would fall inside the house. In all of this coddling of this evil brat, the only person who has been brushed aside is the victim, her own mother. I believe she is a total threat to society. If she can snap like that, and take the life of someone that she supposedly loved, she wouldn’t think twice about taking the life of someone else. Disneyland parenting, kid gloves and dulcet tones were not good for this woman's childhood development. Involving your child in an all-consuming, specialized, competitive travel sport is bad for both their body and character. Those head injuries from soccer may be a component of her impulse control issues. We will never know if she has CTE without an autopsy. Children need some alone time to learn who they are and to develop independence. Encourage them to volunteer in the community by reading to the blind, working in a soup kitchen, or counseling kids with intellectual disabilities in summer camps. Sydney's family and attorney seem to think that a 23-year-old woman crying incessantly like a 4-year-old signifies that she needs mental health treatment. She has been medicated for depression for over three years at this point. It isn't about the depression. It is about them infantilizing an adult because she happens to be a petite female. It's about her manipulating them with this ridiculous crying behavior. She was doing that in the immediate aftermath of the murder while she was lying her head off, and she is still doing it three years later after treatment. Someone needs to sit her down and explain that no one in the real world will accept this behavior from someone who isn't 4 years old anymore.

You can't be serious about her being involved in sports. Just when we get to the point of getting young gals to focus on something other than looks, clothes and being popular, you think competitive sports is bad for the body and character! It's the opposite. It teaches healthy competition, team building, discipline, fitness, goal setting, learning to lose. Should girls go back to just cheerleading the boys??? You obviously have no clue about teens. Sydney was indeed suffering from depression her freshman year. And her tone deaf parents missed it. The drop in grades, isolated behavior. But she was not mentally ill at the time of the murder IMO. She was angry and she snapped.

@@LIGal398 Her family was masking her psychopathy. The elements of narcissism are overt in this case. The loss of impulse control could be from head injuries from soccer, if it is chronic traumatic encephalopathy CTE. I did not say sports were bad for kids. I said specialized travel sports were bad for kids. There is a ton of data that shows this. They get repetitive injuries. These sports injuries are a huge burden to the health care system that no one wants to mention. And these kids get bored of one sport and avoid physical activity later in life. Then, listen to who he give praise, a police officer, a teacher, and a doctor. Please, listen here defense lawyer, just because they work for the State, and the doctor have a high education, doesn't make their letters more important, than people, who for very private reasons cannot add their names. You yourself said, in the beginning, that this woman is insane, and the jury found her not insane. Your words have no more weight in this discussion, because afterwards, you dragged 3 top doctors into the courtroom, and they spoke nonsense for hours, and contradicted each other, as usual, and didn't convince us, or the jury, so what's left for you to say? Taking a few punches at the Prosecutor is not fair. Brenda's son might've been amongst those anonymous writers. Do we even know what he really feels? I know there's many of the less educated people out here, like myself, who are mothers, and we can see, that the criminal of this family is sucking up all the energy of the father, and grandmother, and the victim is the young son! That's what we see. We want to hear him say what he feels. I don't understand the dad. He is backing his daughter for killing his wife and her mother. But he let her go stay the whole time till she was sent to prison with his wife's mother. Why didn't you take her home? IF you believe she crazy and is doing so much better now with meds. She deserves life with no chance of getting out.

I guess because he works, and the grandmother was home on a farm. But I think it is interesting that after paying for her defense and arguing that she shouldn't even be charged, now that she's been convicted as a murderer, the family has left her on her own for her appeal and she has to get a court appointed lawyer for that. (And what even are the grounds for appeal? The judge bent over backwards for the accused.) And her first lawyer, who claimed that he "loved her like a daughter" is also leaving her to a court appointed attorney for any appeal. I think the family were hoping to have a crazy girl rather than a murderer in the family. And once Sydney was convicted as a murderer, their attempt to save the family image (such as it was) was over. If I had been grandma, I'd have locked my bedroom door and watched my back. Tell this girl no, or challenge her image of herself and who knows if she wouldn't go off again.
