Thank you very much for this video! It is very helpful, since we are moving to Australia next year and have to decide, where to live. We know both cities from our travels and loved each for different reasons but to decide for one for living is really not easy. Your opinion that Sydney is a little more for nature and beach lovers is also the main argument for us, although we really enoyed Melbourne. This could be the key argument. Thanks for all the facts, too! It was very helpful.

In reality there is very little to separate the two cities, once you get over the touristy stuff, everyday life feels about the same. Generally with very few exceptions Australian cities are built about the same and in about the same era, to the outsider it really feels like the town planner was literally the same person. Sydney has this unusual geography built around coves and such, you're a bit more likely to get stuck in traffic. Despite all the art and food stuff on the video both cities can be a little bit boring, Monday to Thursday you'll struggle to interact with any humans after work or even find anything open in most suburbs. Depending where you're coming from some people find this totally normal, others get a little depressed. Be prepared to find a hobby (or two). Don't get me wrong I love Australia, I chose it 15 years ago and that's the biggest compliment I can make to a country. Particularly I love Australians, I'm not sure exactly where it came from but those people collectively have a human decency and sense of fairness that is hard to find. Good upbringing I guess? And even in the rare case that they hate you personally they will generally keep it to themselves and still make damn sure you get a fair go at everything in your life, which is a very Australian thing :D I do think their Governments have not done them justice over the years. They let the property bubble get out of hand which is basically a massive wealth transfer from the young people, and that sucks. They let many advanced technical industries especially around manufacturing leave the country, you'll struggle to find anything in an Australian household that says made in Australia on it. They are still exporting their rubbish to other countries on container ships because they haven't built nearly any recycling infrastructure, which is disgraceful. And, Australia for many years had the most profitable banks in the world, which you know what it means: you're getting shafted. But, at least their Govts still make damn sure that people are paid a living wage, which is the main thing. If you work, you're ok. And yes, at the end of the day, on the balance of all those things, I do love Australia. Great country and I'm proud to call it home.

A pretty comprehensive, accurate description of these two cities. I wish you had also covered things like public transport, traffic, and sport. Greater Melbourne is much easier than Greater Sydney to find your way around in, mainly because it is flatter. Also, in addition to discussing food, you should mention the coffee culture. Both cities have great cafes and coffee, but Melbourne has the reputation of being the coffee capital of Australia.

Major bushfires do not happen every year. It takes the wilderness areas a number of years -- 5-10 maybe -- to recover and build up sufficient fuel (dead leaves, undergrowth, etc) for the next big fire. Also weather patterns tend to be cyclical -- we will get a mild summer with no major bushfires some years, and a hot summer with drought and heat waves -- and bushfires -- in other years. Similarly with flooding. I live next to a wilderness area and it burns about every 5-10 years. Certainly not every year. But during a bushfire season like the most recent one, there can be emergencies in different places all summer. The recent summer saw bushfires to the north and west of Sydney, but not in the south. But many places along the Great Dividing Range were burnt.

I'd add Melbourne has much more sporting events if you are into that kind of thing. Melbourne is also much better planned and organised now and for the future structurally and in terms of layout. Melbourne is also more socially progressive though some people might prefer Sydney as a result. Otherwise there's not much between them. Best go visit and see for yourself and find out. You'll probably have more fun in Sydney for a short stay, but prefer to live in Melbourne.
@eddielong8663
@eddielong8663 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, being more socially progressive is a disadvantage to me. Seeing lots of gross-looking overweight women dressed in all-black with short pink hair, and their useless arts degree that somehow makes them think they're smart, is nothing to celebrate about in my opinion. It just demonstrates that they have it too good in this country. Fertility rates are on sharp decline and we're dependent on overseas migration, which will eventually outnumber us and vote in its own cultural ideas, hence we lose our Western identity completely. But hey, that's at least one way of killing off left-wing "progressivism", isn't it? I certainly don't see too many feminists challenging Islam.
@neighbourlywumao7661
@neighbourlywumao7661 3 жыл бұрын
@@eddielong8663 @eddielong86 Well socially progressive as far as I know has nothing or little to do with weight. Useless art degrees? What does this mean? Why do you care what people study? And so what if Australia becomes more diverse and they vote in ideas democratically that might have different pratical or intriguing perspectives from other cultures? Why would feminist be attacking Islam? Feminists are liberal or progressive...they aren't going to attack a minority of already marginalised muslim demographic. What is "western identity"? Australia is a country founded on a takeover of indigenous peoples land.
@eddielong8663
@eddielong8663 3 жыл бұрын
@@neighbourlywumao7661 Try being an outspoken feminist in Pakistan and see how far you get. You wouldn't last a day. But I'd imagine you would quickly cower down to them and abide by their rules because they don't tolerate feminists "progressives" the same way Western society does. You have no idea how easy you have it in this country.

Good job. However, knowing both cities, I feel it depends a lot WHERE you live in either city that makes the hugest difference. I currently live south of Sydney's CBD at Cronulla. This gives me great access to Sydney and yet none of the drawbacks of a city lifestyle. Melbourne would struggle to give me the lifestyle I like near beaches and national parks without having to travel some distance which takes time. Why is this so? Sydney has a better public transport system over the greater distances to it's exterior suburbs. Whereas geographically Melbourne has a lot to offer but in a more spaced out way, meaning a car is more essential in Melbourne to get to those magical places it has. Each city has it down sides of course. It would take me an hour to explain all those here. I hope this helps somewhat for those thinking of coming here.

Both Cities are beautiful but i found that getting any place in Sydney or NSW takes far longer than in Melbourne. The reason why Melbourne is growing faster is that Housing is cheaper and also Jobs are plentiful and it is a cosmopolitan city and has everything you would want. Sydney city roads are pretty bad they are narrow and congested and were not made for cars. Melbourne has wider lanes and it is easier to drive around Melbourne. Sydney has more rain but it comes down more in a shorter period of time. Melbourne has less rain but you get more rain days. Melboure has been in the top 3 of the most livable cities in the world for the last 15 years and also #1 for 3 years in a row whereas Sydney was no where near top 5. Sydney is more polluted than Melbourne. What they say that Melbourne has 3 seasons in one day is a lie, i have been to Sydney many times and their weather changes to, it also More humid and sticky than Melbourne. Melbourne has bette rpublic Transport than Sydney, better quality of housing. Sydney housing is about 30% more for the same equivalent house to build. Sydney is great for Surfers but that's it. @@sooling5529 At the moment Australians have to apply for permission to leave the country if you're going for more than 3 months, it's usually ok. Emirates just suspended flights to and from Sydney and Melbourne a few days ago. Australia will open up with New Zealand first then with other nations that don't have a widespread covid problem over the next 3-6 months. Edit: that's my guess.

Can anyone explain why only in the state of New South Wales and particularly in Sydney, do people primarily call themselves 'Australians'. Indeed it feels odd to call anyone a 'New South Welshman'. In contrast in most other states and territories they often primarily call themselves "Queenslanders", "Victorians", "South Australians", "West Australians" or "Territorians; rather than Australians (except when overseas). What does it all mean?

Sydney is hold all the beauty that Australia has. Sydney is a gift city that God has given to Australia that incredible beaches, hourbour bridge, Iconic opera house, Sydney has very nice public transport in Australia, every 5 minutes in Sydney you get train while in Melbourne after 45 minutes or 1 hour 30 minutes waiting with too much delays and cancellations too bad in Melbourne, please stop deceiving people by saying that a quiet city like Melbourne to compare Sydney a vibrant, beautiful, and iconic city of Sydney

I have lived in Melbourne all my life and occasionally visit Sydney for work. I would choose Sydney over Melb any time. The city is vibrant and lively with a weather to match. And i think there is more culture in Sydney then Melbourne. If I had the $$, can afford a nice house and convince my family to move, I would be living in Sydney.

It’s an interesting perspective rare for a Melbourne person I think. The weather is warmer in Sydney all year round which is a plus. I think Sydney gets more rain actually, however it is more tropical and humid, so the rainfall tends to be less frequent but heavier. The point I couldn’t agree with is ‘culture’ I think As an arty person, my friends and I all agree that Melbourne wipes the floor with its arts, music and cafe scene. Good that we all share different opinions though!
