I read a page that said: In Bon Iver's song "Michicant," the title refers to a Native American term that translates to "where it is warm" or "where it is good." This song has an emotional impact like few others. Those lingering pauses, the build ups at certain points, the soulful lyrics. This would have been magical to hear live. It feels warm and good to me, although not necessarily in an entirely settling way.

I have been listening to Bon Iver for years, and I've been contemplating what about them I am so drawn to. In this video, it came to me. Each person in the band doesn't just compose notes, doesn't just add their part to the song. They have come to terms with how they feel in the moment that they are in. Nostalgia makes you feel strongly as you once did in the past, Bon Iver's music allows you to genuinely experience your feelings in the here and now. It may evoke past feelings, but you are feeling them again, right now. So much of life wants you to look to the future or remember the past. When I listen to this music, I am experiencing life in the now.

Years ago my daughter was traveling home to Ohio from Idaho and introduced me to this album. Over the last year I have made the trek from Ohio to Minnesota via Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and finally a chunk of time in Minnesota. I play this album on every trip. Recently, there have been studies about how music reaches into our very brains and does something once only thought drugs could do. In my 6th decade of life without said drugs, I think I understand when I listen to this music. It reaches into the depths of my being.

@lukula29344 жыл бұрын
@@michaelm210 Hey Michael, I understand, I really do. For me its much easier to get his lyrics without listening with music, at least at first. I read somewhere that Vernon creates a melody first and then fits the lyrics to the rhythm. Don't know if I believe that or not because it seems to be the opposite to me at least. I've rarely read such beautiful and powerful poetry. But then the music is so often a kind of poetry of it's own. Leonard Cohen can come close to those levels on occasion. His lyrics can paint a rich mosaic but its almost like he writes with a consideration for a limited listener's ability to "get" the meaning. Whereas Vernon just seems cut himself open and let the words fall as they lay, or lay as they fall. I've never been an "album buyer" because I look at each song as a separate work that clicks or doesn't. I've had many clicks with Bon Iver. More than any artist in recent memory.

I was going to go to this live, Justin has been an idol of mine for so long. His music has helped me to feel again when I didn't feel like I could and I feel such a deep connection with it. I was on the bus home one night and I decided to look up his name and when it said he was performing in Sydney only a few days from then I was so excited, he was actually coming to Australia, this was my chance. I was going to book a ticket but life and my own petty excuses got in the way and before I knew it my chance was gone. I've never, ever regretted something in my life so much. Please come back to Australia again soon Justin. I need to see you live, I need too. Otherwise I will take the pain and regret to my grave.
