Hey Jun! Springtails are known to eat fungus and fungus gnat larva and all kinds of bad things in your soil. I had a gnat infection from a bad bag of soil and I noticed they weren't able to take a foot hold in the pots I had worm castings in which were infested with springtails!! I learned they are amazing at eating the bad and pooping good so I bought more worm castings (Joselyn's organic soil booster) and those yellow traps and every single gnat was gone within a growing season. And now the amount of roots my plants have are insane!! Hope this helps.

I had a bad infestation of fungus gnats last winter, for me what worked was a concentrated form of BTI that Pretty In Green carries as “Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis - Bti Powder”. It’s also easy to use as you just sprinkle it on your water. Beautiful, beautiful plants Jan, love your easy going/straight forward approach to the plant hobby .

Anthurium offsetting isn’t always due to an issue with the main growth point. They can literally just do it. Maybe they’ve got a very nice root system and they are putting enough nutrients to support a second growth.

We also got a bag of the same tree fern fibre and repotted a huge amount of our plants in it and ended up with a fungus gnat invasion. We just watered with Neem oil a few times, then realised we’d also acquired an army of springtails as well and all seems to be under control now 🤞

I use MICROBE-LIFT BMC2 to control fungus gnats and it’s been a lifesaver! It’s basically a liquid form of mosquito bits (BTI bacteria that kill fungus gnats larvae). I just put 2-3 drops into my 2 gallon sprayer I used to water my plants. I don’t know if you have access to it in Australia, but highly recommend if you do!

I was dealing with fungus gnats for almost the last year. I tried everything it seemed like. I'm finally at the point where I see maybe 2 or 3 fungus gnats a day. What finally worked for me (knock on wood) was nematodes for my non moss pole plants and then (as someone else in the comments said) add a little hydrogen peroxide into each upside down water bottle when watering moss poles.

Fungus gnats are annoying but common. Since switching back to soil, I’ve avoided them by freezing my soil for at least 30 minutes (not ideal for big bags, though). I’d love a video on handling them! I also got spider mites from a friend-she feels bad, but it happens.

I've found the most effective way to ensure fungus gnats can't breed, is by making a tea using EasyTRAP Mozzie Bits - 1 tablespoon per litre, shaken then left overnight in cold water - or use warm water and shake & soak it for half an hour... make it up when it's watering time as it needs to be relatively fresh when applied. I also add a little Foliage Focus. Water your substrate with it just like you do when watering your plants - then do it again 2 weeks later. I do it again a month-ish later, just to make sure(though it's not 100% necessary). It won't kill any gnats that are already alive, but it'll make the substrate completely uninhabitable for gnat eggs. I have hundreds of plants - many Anthuriums, Alocasias, Hoyas, Peperomias, etc etc etc - I swear by it! Sounds like a bit of effort, but it's really not. The more water retention, the more this is necessary. Oh also, it's good for the soil!

You can just add Tanlin drops to the watering. Kills the larvae and doesn't harm other things. Can find it at many Aussie hydroponics stores

Veitchii: new forming leaves soak up all the water pretty fast. They want moisture like Alocasias, never fully dry out. New leaves will pucker if water dries out during forming (a bit like orchids)

Most of mine are in lechuza semi hydro pots. For veitchii I have some in full lechuza black pon(larger than the regular pon) some in tree fern. Some with a mix. One in leca. Leca works ok but it has a lot of salt burn and needs to flush. If you don’t want to go semi hydro I would add tree fern to the mix. It’s hard to recommend which substrate as it depends how often you water/humidity/light (how fast it dries out) I can say it wants to remain airy and very lightly damp, never completely dry. Veitchii’s are pretty forgiving.

2:34 none of those effect the root system much, I'll cut off the roots if I hurt them too much. Roots are hard to recover but easy to grow back. 24:10 that also happened to me, the damage occurs inside the leaf sheath, nothing you can do for that. Anthurium roots don't like to grow deep in firm substrate, they just poke out. 49:10 I'll cut the new leaf and leave an old one.

About veitchii's leaf damage, in my expierence with other anthuriums (sirih and pallidiflorum) the cause is usually humidity level being lower than the plant needs this moment or the substrate being not moist enough while the leaf is forming

Yep, me too on the fungus gnats. Once I added moss to my Anthuriums mixture the gnats got so much worse. I have been using Tree Fern fiber “New Zealands” from Amazon and it did not bring gnats. The more moisture you have the more gnats we get. I use BIT solution every watering and also bought a KATCHY from Amazon. I feel you my friend it’s a pain for sure, but our plants love it.

🍜 omg fungas gnats! I’ve had them in my soil bad for awhile. Probably because I tend to ‘over love’ my plants and keep them too moist lol I even had larvae in a few moss poles. I’m getting them under control now. A friend gave me something called fly drench (bought at a hydro shop) for the moss poles. 1ml to 5ltrs. Took 1 treatment and gone. I also have Yayes Pyrethrum diluted in a spray bottle. After a few rounds of spraying the soil they are finally going (I hope lol). I’ve moved about half of my plants to leca or pon which I also think is helping. Thank for another good video. Looking forward to the gnats video.

Hey! Just found your channel in Chicago from my monstera group. I'm so excited to watch your content! Regarding your fault in the leaves at 24:00 do you think it's possible that you hurt one of the more important roots when you were repotting out a but if a while back? For your gnat problem, can you get "mosquito dunks" (that's the brand) by you? I found them on Amazon after someone else in the group gave me her "mosquito dunk tea" recipe. It's supposedly safe for your plants, humans and animals (toxic to mosquitos, gnats, and one other bug that I can't remember off the top of my mind- but it's not the honey bee). Anyway here's what she told me to do: To make your "tea", you'll use 1/4 of a mosquito dunk per gallon of water. You can just cut the dunk up with a knife into quarters or whatever size you need. You can put them in a rain barrel as well. You leave the dunk soaking in the water overnight & then remove the dunk. You can reuse one more time in the same way (reuse it right away or let dry out completely in between uses). Once you remove it, you have your "tea" which is the water that the dunk was in. You can use the tea to water all of your plants as you normally do. It will take about a month to get rid of all of the larva because of the life cycle of the gnat. She suggests to also use the sticky gnat traps in the meantime. Also, I have one last question for you-- have you tried a soil substrate situation where you also add a wick in the bottom of the clear pot to wick up water from bottom watering? If so, have you had any luck or do you have any suggestions?

I’m interested to know how you find the layer of moss on top of your pots? I’m in Brisbane and was worried that the layer of moss could cause the stems to rot from being constantly damp at the base? My aroid mix is basically the same as your recommended one and use fofo as well.

With aroids, there's not much danger in stem rot, unless there's a fresh cut. There's not really a base to the plant, as new roots just grow from the nodes. You can see on Jan's clarinervium roots at 28:10, the main part of the root is just buried stem from which side roots grow. Some growers with mature plants that don't want to repot into a bigger container will even put a plastic collar around the stem so they can bury the stem in more substrate/aroid mix so they can grow more roots above the container.
