I love Dino Valenti. He had the qualities of a true artist. Passionate, unique, intense. Compare the 60s anthem "Get Together" by the Youngbloods to his original acoustic version.

QUICK SILVER MESSENGER SERVICE, "FRESH AIR". I remember hearing this once I want to say 1970. I was around 13 years old. I knew I was a fan. In fact it was some years later when I heard this again. This is a real jam. There is a live video I've seen on KZbin this is even longer. Which is great by me. Thanks for giving this song a listen. Another Group, TRAFFIC doing songs, "DEAR MR. FANTASY", and "THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS" 🎶 Rock On 🎵

Piano solo echoed some of the guitar licks in places. There are strong jazz influences in this quintessential San Francisco sound. Imagine grooving to this sound with a a new friend at the Monterey Pop Festival, ‘hitting’ the Fresh air, it was an almost cosmic experience.

Quicksilver Messenger Service was a great live band and very influential from 1967-74, but quite lost in time now. "Pride of Man" and "Dino's Song" from their debut album are really fine examples SanFran bands of the late 60s.

QMS is the only band Nicky Hopkins ever officially joined. You’ve heard him play many times without realizing it. He was the greatest English studio piano player of the 1960s and early ‘70s. He played on all the Kinks records 1966-68, The Who’s ‘Who’s Next’ and ‘Who By Numbers’ and of course “My Generation”; electric piano on The Beatles “Revolution”, and piano on The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy For The Devil”, “She’s A Rainbow”, “Gimme Shelter”, “Monkey Man”, “Angie”, “Waiting On A Friend”, and was all over ‘Exile On Main St’. I can’t imagine those songs without him, and he plays the wonderful piano solo here.

Quicksilver is an old group that is still plying today that has a diverse music history. They split up and reformed and played in other groups over the years. Most of today's music by them is considered is more progressive, but back in the old days that really jammed and played some interesting genera. Check out a song by them doing an ole Bo Diddley hit titled " Who Do You Love? by Quicksilver Messenger Service off their "Live at the Fillmore June 1968" This of course is a live and long version but you can hear the a short version from the studio as well.t

Saw Quicksilver in the fall of 1971. it was the loudest concert I have ever been to My right eardrum has never been the same. The really cool thing that I appreciate more every year is that the first act was the one and only Long John Baldry, your esteemed countryman. You should check out his version of "it Ain't Easy." Back when this band first formed possession a single joint was a felony but LSD was perfectly legal. The day after agreeing to form a band Dino got busted for possession and spent almost 2 years in prison before rejoining. They were one of the pioneers of the 3 guitar front line with Dino Valenti, John Cipollina, and Gary Duncan. Their first local hit was Pride of Man. Other great songs were Mona, Who Do You Love, and Gold and Silver, a psychedelic reworking of Dave Brubek's Take Five. My favorite video of them is Mona played live at Sonoma State University. Playing barefoot out on the grass with little kids running around and through the band during the song. It captures the early Hippie vibe perfectly.

I grew up in the Bay Area and saw this band live way back when. It had one of my very favorite guitarists: John Cipollina. He’s a Legend with a really distinctive style. It hits you right away in this song too. Impresario concert promoter Bill Graham was a huge fan of John’s playing. I love how you mentioned you loved the spaces John used in part of this song…I hadn’t heard this song in years and thought the same thing just before you said it. ❤

Very cool reaction to a great song, from one of great SF Bay bands, who I was lucky enough to see in concert, back in 1969. And when Dino sang, "Have another hit of sweet California Sunshine", he was likely referring to a very top quality LSD, manufactured by the (in)famous "Brotherhood" in Orange County, called "Orange Sunshine". Which coincidentally, happened to be popped into every mouth of the LA audience attending that very QMS show I happened to attend! "Quite a vibe" is an understatement, as both the crowd and the band, were riding on the very same "head" all night long...

The North Bay - Marin county area seemed much smaller back then, it was not uncommon to hear great music in local dives. I was friends with their roadie Anthony and got a chance to see a couple of practice sessions. One quiet evening the studio was empty when there was a knock on the door and suddenly the place was full of cops looking to raid a massage parlor next door but had the wrong address.

I appreciate your reaction to this music. You are absolutely correct about the absolute correctness of the bass and drums. Freiberg and Elmore were just about the best. I was impressed when you wanted to replay the guitar solo, which is great. (There's a rumor that when they were rehearsing, John Cipollina couldn't think of something to play for a second, and Gary Duncan said, "Wait! We can put that into the song" or something like that, and so that brilliant pause was created.) Cipollina's slow catch-up playing on two strings on that solo has never been duplicated, I saw you shaking your head. Nicky Hopkins is one of the great rock piano players, and you noticed how they went to "cut time" after the slower groovy piano part. All the best to you.

Some other QMS songs to hear are Joseph's Coat, The Fool, Mojo (a cover of Got My Mojo Workin), Mona and so many instrumentals, mostly dance music but Calvary especially played right after Maiden of the Cancer Moon as an intro (how it's recorded) is devastating, note the Latin sound. This is on the Happy Trails album, next song is Happy Trails (short), a nice exit after Calvary. BTW, back in the day California Sunshine aka Orange Barrel was LSD in a pill like Sandoz made.

Actually, the " San Francisco sound" started in the mid 60's with this band, Grateful Dead, Spirit ( LA technically) and especially the Jefferson Airplane. The Airplanes 3rd album , "After Bathing at Baxters" was suppose to represent an entire acid trip. Spirit's single, Mechanical World captures existential despair better than any from the period.
