SUMMARY PUNJAB RIVER WATER DISPUTES Punjab rivers have annual water flow of : 32.5 MAF (MAF = Million Acre Feet) Total cultivable land : 105 Million Acres Punjab's own annual irrigation requirement : 52.5 MAF Punjab's river water diverted to Haryana and Rajasthan : 18 MAF Shortfall in Punjab's irrigation requirement yearly : 52-(32-18) = 38 MAF So water withdrawn from ground through tubewells : 38 MAF Recharge rate of groundwater (annually) : 3 MAF Shortfall in recharge of groundwater : 38-3 = 35 MAF yearly This shortfall may lead to Punjab becoming desert by 2025 Water in Ganga and Yamuna : 450 MAF Water from Ganga Yamuna utilized for irrigation : 45 MAF Water going into sea from Ganga Yamuna : 405 MAF Haridwar being 1900 feet above sea level esnures that by proper planning Ganga Yamuna water can be used for Rajasthan and Haryana The current river water distribution in Punjab is an environmental disaster and was executed by congress govt to cheat Punjab of its just water rights. Riparian principle : Under the riparian principle, all landowners whose properties adjoin a body of water have the right to make reasonable use of it as it flows through or over their properties. If there is not enough water to satisfy all users, allotments are generally fixed in proportion to frontage on the water source.Riparian Principle is genrally accepted for distribution of waters. But in case of Punjab it is violated. As per Indian constitution river waters are a state subject but in case of Punjab the river water distribution is fixed by center. NOTE : RIVER WATER ISSUE IMPACTS BOTH HINDUS AND SIKHS OF PUNJAB SO IT IS NOT HINDU Vs sikhs
