Thanks you sir for explaining and showing the technical side! I could only imagine if I could have watched your videos about 38 years ago how much that would have helped me as a beginner and saved heartache LOL!! What's cool is even after 38 years of detailing, paint and body work I've learned so much from your channel! I'm getting ready to try my first candy paint job in the next few months 😮 and this video was just what I needed!!

love how technical slyvester is with his explanation and theory. It goes right along all the trainings and/or seminars that i've sat through with paint manufactures when they're teaching their product line(s) of paint. I'll always respect the DIY'er or old school guys that simply know all the right parameters and conditions through experience. but when you're new and learning you need to learn to do it the right way first. theres too many IG/youtubers that are spraying purely for appearance and not understanding or adhering to the manufactures recommended SOP's. if you want a paint job to last 10-15+ years, do it like how the engineers that formulated these products intended for them to be applied. i would like to add one small tip: with any paint job you do, its a good idea to take notes. Write it all down for your record. everything you did to create that paintjob down to how you first mixed it to eventually how you applied it. how many coats. did you have to add more tint? Did you use a slower or faster reducer that day? did you need to do a multiple passes? did you accidentally add too much of one additive or color? was your distance or speed slower or faster? what was your air pressure? etc... it all helps streamline the whole operation so you are not starting completely from scratch everytime you go to paint something or blend something.

Wow, that was incredibly helpful. Working toward painting my truck (body work right now) in a deep red metallic but not candy. Just the description of how to paint the metallic without the blotchy look was invaluable. I've done a couple of repairs that did come out a little blotchy (using a spray can for base, one car was silver and one was gold) and I hadn't figured out how to correct it. This was really helpful. Great tutorial! I've seen painters get burned using a colored sealer when color matching. Most paint lines are using the 7 shades of grey to achieve a certain shade. Medium blue pearls can be very deceiving on coverage without the proper ground coat. Also, to prevent mottling I slow my paint down as much as possible( high temp reducer). Thats where waterborne has an advantage. With basecoats like DBC, I use the wetter is better theory (within reason). Seems to help with mottling and dirt. Falls in line with what you're saying about high pressure and drop coats. Keep the videos coming.

I've done that with tri coats but on a spray out card with the tape, the next time I do a spray out with with the tape I'm going to use a bigger patch like you did because it's hard to tell exactly how many coats you need on a spray out card. On the card it looked like I needed three coats but on the vehicle it only took two to match. Enjoy your videos.

I just want to say thank you for explaining everything the way you did! It's obvious you're an experienced painter. I WAS a professional painter, both in the body shop situation and manufacturing situation. The test panel you were counting the coats on, we used to call that a "let-down panel". It's almost a necessity for any paint job because of the use of micas and pearl in modern tri-coat paint jobs. You know what I'm talking about. You just scratched the surface with the candy paint. Pearl candy tri-coat is a nightmare I'm glad I don't have to deal with anymore. 30 years in painting was enough for me. Thanks for sharing the information and allowing me to add my comment.

I'm right there with you on years under my belt. Sometimes painting can be a love/hate relationship. Some colors are getting more complex with things like quad coats now and different additives needing different techniques. It's not as easy as most people think it is. Beautiful paintwork is definitely an underappreciated skill.

I am a service tech if 38+ years trying to learn the products, procedures and best practices as I prepare to plan and order products for a vehicle for me. Sounds self centered but I like to do it once and do it right for longevity. I am not racing, I am not vowing to show & shines, just learning the lingo is part of this as well. Online, I see terms that say “3-Stage”, well what is that. Seeing this video presented in this fashion, I really do believe that anyone should be documenting the history of date sprayed, temp, humidity, gun, tip, PSI and distance much less product used. I would add one more, he shot a test panel. If doing a complete, this goes with the vehicle for future use in a protected soft case. If I put a 2003 Tahoe engine with a modified 87 era 700R4 and using the body control module from the same sonar, I will have a service manual focused on the wiring, colors, connectors, photos for location and I.D. would or should be a game changer. I won’t live forever, but if this info incudes brands, part numbers, actual measurements and schematic. This makes the out come of diagnostics, repair, being able to repeat someone efforts & getting the same results a game changer. Think, it adds to the re-sale value and any capable service tech able to do the repair and match the results in hours for repairs, but for paint it takes more time yet doable and can be repeated regardless. No one manufactures a vehicle without info, wiring schematics, or diagnostic flow charts and without a paint method, brand, test spray panel included along with good accurate information, peanut butter hits the fan while in the dark! Thanks for sharing and explaining. Now I know! It gives me confidence in my future choices! God bless. DK, ASE master tech since 78, retired.

@@deankay4434 Not to be rude, but don't overthink it. I've been on my own numerous times with colour matching into someone else's work with no sense of direction. Come with the territory. Repairing blender colors on a conversion van sucks with no paint codes. In a perfect world, courtesy would go a long way but it's not a perfect world. It's part of experience and skill level.

@@class5bodyworks I don’t think I was trying to overthink anything. For me, this is learning. Also, maybe no one makes a spray-out panel to go with a custom paint job, that make it hard in my eyes. Others like you with talent, can figure it out. As a tech, on other forums, guys / gals both would benefit by information about parts used and wiring. I watch videos where they install parts for 7 different company’s and no consistency in wiring, fuel tank venting or what an activated carbon canister can do for someone’s daily driver. Some have a budget for next month and 5 years. Others, put bills in a pile. I am simply suggesting a plan.

Dang, I did the exact opposite of this and cranked up the PSI trying to fix tiger stripe last year on a hood I was working on. BTW, you are never "beating a dead horse" if you use a different communication channel/method to make a point. Excellent video , I have seen some other videos and when the painter is doing another coat and they will go over all areas twice ,which would seem wrong to me and as your explaining even the 50% overlap is like two coats , but necessary to avoid patchyness , and as long as you count your coats and do everything the same , I am going to do a small red candy paint job on a old 76 Goldwing , so three piece false tank and side covers all quite small bits really , and I want the insides painted so that will be my practice .Cheers .

@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Жыл бұрын
Couple things to consider. The sheet metal must be metal finished. If it’s oil canning or in tough shape then that will affect your appearance with expansion and contraction. If all of that is a solid foundation then I’ve never had an issue doing this. We use SEM seam sealer it stays soft enough not to crack.

After you've stirred the paint how long is that good for? Reason I ask, is when I'm refinishing wood with lets say a satin top coat. After I shoot, if there's any large amount of time to when I shoot again, I have to stir again, otherwise I'll get settling of the flattening agents., Then the sheen will change from a satin to a semi or even gloss. Is this the same with mettalics? As the flakes I'm sure could settle.. Cheers John 🍻

When it comes to metallics and basecoat the amount of time that it sits does not affect the way the metallics look you just need to make sure you have the correct flash times per the manual and TDS sheet for every product the clearcoat has a very specific amount of time that you must wait in between coats and not exceed

@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS So for a low end develbis HVLP gun with the tiger pulled what do you think the ball park is for PSI? Thank you in advance. You can see I am doing a lot of classic motorcycle and atv restos on my channel but am always striving to be better. The last tank I did was on a 1985 ATC200X and it came out flawless. I am also wondering how I would use 2k high build as a sealer for my tanks. I get them so flat by blocking the 2k but always have a small area or two where I get down to metal, like a dime or smaller area. It would be so nice to just be able to spot and feather around these spots and let flash and go right to base coat without having to guide coat and sand yet again?? I use 2k because on bikes I need a primer that is sand able over night. A car is such a long project waiting for epoxy to cure is not a big deal but with bikes it has to move fast. Hi. I have a issue. My painter stretched the paint on my car. He had to paint a DBC12 house of colour kandy pagan gold. But we didn’t have enough material do do the paint job. I was told I had plenty. ( 64 impala we had 7 quarts of DBC12). But it looks like we didn’t. He didn’t tell me he just shouted the car with what he had. (He lost a lot of paint, painting all the little parts and jams, hood/trunk interior) Anyway… my car is now all blotchy because he didn’t have enough paint. He did 2 coats when it was supposed to be 6!!! So yeah. My question is… can we sand the clear coat and re-apply more coats over the blotchy base? Would it cover it or just make the blotchy spot darker. Hope I’m clear? Thanks.

I just painted my bike, a Goldwing...all 37 individual parts. Being that my shop is just 14'x20', I had to spray parts in "batches" due to insufficient room for all 37 parts all at once. Aside from few dust nibs, paint job came out nice considering it's my very 1st attempt at candy and 3rd ever paint job, last being nearly 30 years ago(I'm 63, thank you😁) Problem I got now, is that color don't match on bunch of parts, mostly due to poor technique and inconsistent spraying. Since they're all already clear coated, how can I correct them individually? I'm guessing all will need to be resprayed to match majority that do match?

I hate to be the bad news bear but you will need to re spray the silver and start over to get them to match correctly. Only other option is wet sand them and add candy paint one coat at a time on the lighter ones till they match the darker ones then re clear.

@@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS That's kind of what I figured. I was going to repaint all the mismatch parts any way, to match the darker parts. Being that the parts have 2 coats of white sealer, 2 coats of fine metallic silver, 2 coats of midcoat clear with white diamond pearl, @2+ coats of Blue Hawaii'n kandy then 4 coats of mid solids 2K clear. I did spray out speed shapes for all coats individually so, I got something to reference the color to, as I re-spray each different coats. Thanks for your input. No bad news there, it was expected. I'm no pro, even pros mention how hard it is to match candy.

It’s not in the base coat it’s in the candy. It was our first candy paint job. Lesson learned. I needed to make the first few coats thinner. This channel is about teaching and learning. If you want to be “that guy” then don’t watch the channel.

Bad advice about mixing paint on the scales. You can't do that unless you have the paint manufacturer computer program to do it. Weight and volume are two different things. Other than that two thumbs up for the videos you do. Great viewing.

Not sure why you think that is bad advice. You are referring to mixing and creating colors I’m referring to a candy concentrate and or metallics that are already created. This is for when you add reducer and hardener. A scale is way more accurate so I disagree. Thank you 👍🏻👊🏻

If the product is 2:1 by volume, that is not the same as 2:1 by weight unless they (hardener and clear for example) happen to weight the exact amount, which is unlikely for most products, especially primer. The more you mix the larger the error if you mix by weight over volume. It's like a gallon of water isn't the same weight as a gallon of feather fill. They are the same volume, but not the same weight so a scale would throw the ratios off if you mix by weight (200 grams to 100 grams). It's easy to try yourself. Just pour a known volume into a cup and weight it. Then do it with the other components.

H.o.k has a list of the density on their site. Ru311 is 7.20 # per gallon, ku152 is 10.07 # per gallon and uk01 (for example) is 8.24 # per gallon. So you can see the weights of these are not equal so the volumes at the given weights will be off if you don't compensate... on a side note..I hate that the gun filter is after the air regulator. All of those filters have a pressure drop (usually listed ) so setting your regulator at one pressure it will be spraying at a lower pressure the the gun. If the filter starts going bad, it will further reduce the pressure. Better to have the filter first, then the regulator to maintain accurate pressure at the gun.
