After Callas's live performance at La Scala in 1953, this is my varotie version of this scene, and I think it's my very favorite recording of Sass. I love her wonderful legato, the exquisite pianissimi, and the way she beautifully binds all the trills into the melody. Brava!

Ihre 2 Decca Schallplatten, die auch in der DDR vertrieben wurden, trugen dazu bei, das so etwas wie ein internationales Flair spürbar wurde. Neben der tollen Aufnahmetechnik schätze ich die grafische Gestaltung der Platten. Man begegnete einer wunderschönen Frau, die wunderschön sang. Diese Arie aus Trovatore mit den schwebenden Legati, den zahlreichen Trillern muss man singen können:Sylvia Sass tut es mit Bravour. Vielen Dank!

Too bad her voice seemed to give out way too soon apparently from over scheduling & some inadvisable repertoire choices. When I heard her for the 1st time on a live I LOMBARDI from Covent Garden I became an instant fan but within about 15 years her international singing career had all but ended so I understand. She retired from opera, so she did say around 1995 at the tender age of 44I I then searched out her first CD of arias (still available in the early 2000‘s) & among the other pieces she sang was the I LOMBARDI aria with the comparable artistry & beauty of her live performance. At this time she still suffered from the soprano disease of textual incomprehensibility in the higher range but later when she sang & filmed BLUEBEARD‘S CASTLE singing in her native Hungarian language, I was told by one of her compatriots that her diction, not surprisingly, was perfectly clear. Not being versed in this language I had to take this on faith but when I saw her video of IL TABARRO it became obvious that there was much improvement in the clarity of her pronunciation. Sorry to say that her voice itself, although still wonderful, did not, so I was informed, maintain,sometime thereafter, the quality of much of her previous work.Fortunately she has had success with teaching & master classes as well as a painter. I will always cherish her artistry in its best period. Plus her pianissimo singing, when at her best, rivaled that of Caballe. IMO.

Opera is so strenuous, and some people even with big voices have a throat of glass. One had to be particularly careful of repertoire choice to lead the long haul. It had been proven over and over again that singing what ever you want to shortens your carreer. Sills says this when she sang Roberto Devereux ... she one it would take five years away from her voice but says she wouldn't have changed it for the world. Pauline Viardot said the same thing. She ruined her voice singing what ever she wanted to....

Her pianos and diminuendos are pleasent and so is her timbre. Certainly not a dramatic soprano for which Verdi wrote most of his roles. (Not Gilda or Violetta for example)

Sylvia Sass "D'amor sull'ali" Il Trovatore il volume di questo post è purtroppo molto basso e questo fatto non mi consente di dare, come vorrei, una opinione che sia chiara. A me pare, tuttavia, in maniera inconfutabile che la Sass abbia una voce di colore che potrei definire gradevole ma, l'interpretazione fa trapelare l'intenzione di questa artista di volere somigliare costantemente alla Callas .. l'espressività ottenuta nelle mezze voci e filati, pure somiglia, anche se è sempre molto meno efficace nei risultati , a quella della Callas . idem nella dizione dove il mio orecchio avverte costanti i tentativi, di questa artista di voler copiare il fraseggio e le vocali della Callas questo soprano ha le note acute di assai modeste dimensioni , ovvero di poca potenza e, immagino, che l'imitazione nella note acute sia per lei sempre un sollievo poichè ricorre ovunque ai filati , anche là dove Verdi non li chiede affatto . Posso anche aggiungere che questa artista, nella zona medio- alta si ritrova ad avere spesso i fiati corti a causa degli effetti che ella si prefigge di ottenere per imitare la Callas ( e che le consumano le scorte di fiato) , La Callas invece, ha sempre dimostrato di avere enormi fiati in tutto il suo registro sia che le occorresse fortissima grinta , o solo volumi forti, o, ancora, , splendide mezze voci e magici filati . Tutto ciò era , però, da lei eseguito solo là dove Verdi lo richiedeva. Posso concludere che la Sass è un soprano che certo non brilla per la" personale" maniera di cantare, visto che cerca di imitare in tutto la Divina.

credo che tutti i soprano , abbiano provato a trovare l'imposto altissimo e meraviglioso che aveva Maria . io stessa sono riuscita a trovare dei vantaggi solo perchè sono riuscita a voltare la voce nella posizione altissima che aveva la Callas, ma mai mi sono sognata di imitare la maniera di cantare che era solo sua e che proveniva dalla sua anima. la Sass non copia solamente la posizione altissima dell'imposto che aveva la Callas , la Sass della Callas, imita la posizione di ogni singola sillaba , i fraseggi, i particolari tipi di crescendo e diminuendo con risultati che mai neppure si avvicinano a quelli che riusciva ad ottenere Maria. il colore di voce della Sass è ovviamente artefatto a seguito di questo costante e non apprezzabile tentativo di copiare la maniera di cantare della Callas. è la prima artista che sento e che in maniera inconfutabile riesce , anche se con discutibili risultati , ad imitare quasi tutto di un' altra cantante. i risultati della Sass , per me che sono soprano e adoratrice della Callas,, sono mediocri anche se sono stati più che sufficienti a sostenerla durante la sua carriera pluridecennale. ho letto di recente interviste fatte a lei in passato in cui le si domanda perchè imita la Callas e lei risponde che non imita nessuno. certo dire questo è comodo poichè tutti sanno che la personalità che si manifesta quando si canta deve essere quella che appartiene al cantante che canta e non a quella di un cantante che si cerca di imitare. lei ha vissuto sempre all'ombra della Callas e , sapendo imitarla anche solo in maniera discutibile , ha potuto essere sui teatri per decenni. questo è quanto io non capisco . che la Sass abbia imitato sempre la Callas è indiscutibile, come è indiscutibile che questa signora non avesse nulla di suo da dire quando cantava.

Honestly speaking, as I write below, I like Sass' rendition very much. Of course you cannot compare her with Maria Callas, a soprano sfogato, a vocal phenomenon.

Aetion Sass is trying to resemble Callas with increasingly questionable results. as you say Callas can not be copied. if it imitates how does the Sass do not get that mediocre results .... However, the vague resemblance to the imposed Mary and her phrasing instead meet a certain audience who does not know that the personality in singing is the thing artist must cultivate more and more to be himself. copy or. rather, try to copy is not something worthy of an artist.

Bruna Marini I am not sure that Sass is trying to imitate Callas. I just like her rendition of this aria. Of course, one can hear it with Callas too (just look at the right side of this page) and see the difference. Many sopranos have tried to copy the incomparable La Divina, with no results. One of them was Elene Souliotis, who prematurely lost her voice.
