I learned from uni that the Filipino singing gene came from natural selection. Men used to court women by serenading or "harana". The best singer or the most charismatic performer wins the heart of the maiden, and that's why good performers and singers most likely produced the next generation, and so on, until almost all Filipinos now have the singing gene. There should be a documentary about this somewhere. 😂

“Harana” is to serenade with a “kundiman.” “Kundiman” means a Filipino folk love song. Filipinos already sing kundiman during the 1800s. But…singing was already deep in the culture since indigenous tribes already have songs & dances even before the Spanish came. Just like every other indigenous tribes from all over the world, singing & dancing is always part of the culture.

Main feature of these languages are the frequent use of vowels. For Philippine Language, these vowels are next to M, N, H, L, Ng, and S. A likely consequent of these languages is the open vocal chords with humming and airy qualities. These languages are relatively easy to make songs. Of course, there a ritual chants.

I think Filipinos are good at singing because it's woven into their daily lives. It's cultural. My grandma is Filipina and grew up in the Philippines in the 30s. She always talked about how everyone she knew were always singing whether in the fields while the farmers are planting or young men serenading (harana) the women as part of their courtship. Music was also a big part of their celebrations and ceremony. Her older sisters were in the church choir. Many of the young men she remembered knew how to play a guitar. I think these contributed to Filipinos natural inclination towards vocal expression and musicality at a young age. Add a thriving karaoke culture which provides ample opportunities to develop singing skills. I'm not sure if Harana is thriving but when we stayed in the province, techno music was playing at 6 am then karaoke at 6 pm until midnight! The dogs were even howling along lol
