Sylvie Guillem was among first ballerinas who started as gymnasts, which is so common now. She brought a lot of technical skills that were unheard of, but with that style of dancing artistic impression disappeared. Ballet reminds gymnastics, kind of competition whose extension better and who can jump higher. Some of former gymnasts like Natalia Osipova managed to develop acting skills, but most of them did not.

What year is this performance from? I’m assuming she was quite young. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her dance in such a gentle way. I’m so much more familiar with her daring and athleticism.

Today’s competition dancers ( or any dancer!) should watch this. Sylvie Guillem is a balanced dancer. She uses both sides, left and right, equally. So many dancers now clearly favor one side and it makes them such boring and predictable dancers.

My problem with the exquisite Sylvie in this variation: she’s still the regal swan Odette or tte seductress Odile or Raymonda. She’s not a buoyant sixteen year old or a young girl just expressing her heart’s hidden desires. There’s no youthfulness. Even though this is a legato adagio of a variation, it’s just too steely. Performed to perfection just devoid of heart and warmth.

Malgré sa virtuosité, je préfère Aurélie dans ce rôle, spécialement pour le deuxième act
