Award-winning documentary Harana - The Search for the Lost Art of Serenade (2012).
Now streaming for free on KZbin.
Upon his father's death, Florante, a classically trained guitarist returns to the Philippines after 12 years of absence and rediscovers the music of harana - a long-forgotten tradition of Filipino serenading when men sang under the window at night to declare their love for a woman.
Intent on unearthing these unheralded songs, Florante travels to the remote provinces where he discovers three of the last surviving practitioners - a farmer, a fisherman and a tricycle driver.
Word soon spread of these master haranistas whose style of singing touch the hearts everywhere they performed. But the question remains - can harana be restored to its former glory or is it doomed to vanish silently into the night forever?

When Tatay Felipe said, "I hope we'll see each other again," and then Tatay Romeo replied, "We'll see each other there," I literally burst into tears at that part because that was their final meeting and possibly the most beautiful moment in their lives. Tatay Romeo said, "These are the last two minutes of our lives," and that's it, they did what they wanted, to be heard by everyone. And now, they're peacefully doing their grand serenades and singing their favorite songs in heaven. They're being listened to by the Almighty.

Just watched this today with my son and my mom (who is 82). She started singing along to some of the songs. I asked how she knew them and she said that she used to sing them with my Lola when they would iron clothes for money. I asked her when the last time she heard them and she said back when she sang them with her. I got hella emotional. Thank you for this documentary and preserving this dying tradition ♥️

Just watched this today. Di ko akalain na 3 yrs ago na pala ito at wala na pala silang tatlo. Thank you Florante for showcasing the talents that would have otherwise been buried in their graves. Made me realize how important it is to do what you love doing, while you still can. I felt like watching my Lolo(s) fulfill their lifelong dream. Harana songs are so pure and full of emotions and honesty. I did shed a few tears on their "farewell" scene but at the same time, very happy for them kasi kitang kita mo talaga na napakaligaya nila. What a way to spend the final years of their lives. Again, salamat for putting together this awesome documentary. Lots of love from Australia.

I listen to all kinds or music, from skrillex dubstep to mozart's classics, but nothing touches my soul and roots more then Harana songs. My uncle is also fond of this type of music and other rondalla songs. There is something just so beautiful about these songs, I hope we Filipinos learn how to appreciate and live this kind of music, our kind of music.

I saw the thumbnail and no second toughts, I watch it immediately. I grew up in the 90's and in the alternative rock era. Then we moved to Batangas in mid '97. I heard those elders playing harana and kundimans which is very facinating for a boy who was born in the Metros. I really missed those old days, no cellphone, no internet, not all have TV's, most of the times there were power interuptions and all you have to do was to listen to those elders ( Ka Sergio and Ka Nardo ) who tirelessly played harana songs and kundimans. I knew that Tatay Felipe and Tatay Tino are singing with all of their hearts up there. Kudos to you Maestro Florante, these songs will never be forgotten. ❤❤❤

While some might compare this style to Spanish or Mexican music, I still believe it has unique qualities that make it unmistakably Filipino. That feeling of complete surrender of the self to one's beloved, combined with the irony and pessimism of the lyrical content, as well as the pathetic, grassroots character of the vocal execution...what one might call "pagkasawi". This is just something I don't find in other Spanish-influenced genres. And fittingly so since the oppression under Spain reflects in the gloom of the music. So there's this historical precedent as well. It's Filipino in the way Jolibee spaghetti is Filipino...based on an existing Western recipe yet not quite like the original.

The pre-colonial peoples of the Philippines had existing courtship rituals and rites long before Spain arrived. Kundiman is also uniquely Tagalog. Harana is unique to the Philippines because of this amalgamation of indigenous and colonial influences. We Filipinos best remember that. Spain did not give us Harana. That’s ours from the very beginning

Tama ka jan lods ... Nung araw kc cguro la pa recordings kaya uniquely pinoy style of singing yung nadebelop.

I'm now 69 years old and my eyes got misty! Harana is one of our valued Filipino culture that reflects the true Filipino spirit! Salute to you, Florante Aguilar, for taking time & sacrifice to make this precious documentary! Hoping that through your documentary, Harana culture will be revived! Haranistas may vanish but the essence of harana, the SONG, will live on through the years! It only need a few young generation, with the deep Filipino spirit, to stir up the sleepy water! Florante Aguilar may your tribe increase among our young generation to carry on this GIFT the heaven gifted our nation! Just a few notes from those old songs will surely touch the dormant emotion in one's heart. The Filpino way of singing is just unique among the Filipinos! I could still remember Charmaine Clamor, who's based in the U.S., but still singing and reviving the Filipino culture keeping it alive! Wish you two would be able to meet and join your God-given gifts, to keep this Filipino culture of Harana alive!

Exactly, I was thinking the same thing as I started watching this. Harana is very akin to the Mexican mariachi-ranchero music. And what's the common denominator? Being ex-Spanish colonies. So Spain left something beautiful after all, to her former colonies -- music being one of them.
@luisbaltazar8056
@luisbaltazar8056 4 жыл бұрын
@@mylesgarcia4625 Well I will say music is closer to the bolero, caribbean influence, and the Trío Romántico music in Mexico. The music wasn't so much "left" but there was a strong appropiation of instruments from people all over the colonies, then they created their own music.

As of today, the Philippine population is reportedly at 118 million. And yet, this movie had reached only less than half a million for three years. It makes me sad to think that this part of the culture may be vanishing, if not already. After all, this movie was said to be produced in 2012. Where does both the government and the Filipino music industry have focused their resources on?

Im glad that YT recommended your documentary My grandad is a haranista here in my hometown, Tarlac City. It was their main income back then. My grandad will always tell his haranista days to me with joy in his face. With his two brothers and father iikot sila sa buong bayan para mangharana and their payment was 2 pesos per client. Sadly today wala ng gumagawa din sa amin ng ganyan. Yumao na rin ang magkakapatid at mga kaibigan nilang haranista. Though it was regretful na hindi ko natutunan ang art ng harana it was still a privilege to see in person a legit haranista. And I’m proud that my lolo and lolo sa tuhod ay mga haranista. Now, i play the classical guitar with western music. Because of this documentary na encourage ako to play harana music. Thank you sir Florante for this documentary. I was taken aback memory lane.

Thank you Florante! Your documentary moved me to tears, not just in sadness for the lost tradition of the harana, but because it brought back the memory of how beautiful traditional Filipino music is, and how it still resonates among Filipinos no matter their age. The common belief that the stereotype of all Filipinos being able to sing had started with the advent of karaoke and later videoke neglects the long history and tradition of music and singing portrayed in the film, and how singing was deeply integral to the intimate expression of love at both the individual and societal level. Perhaps the reason why there are so many excellent Filipino singers today has less to do with having been inspired by foreign singers and more by just hearing parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts singing at home. I remember that in high school, recesses and hanging out after school involved lots of small groups of classmates singing around someone playing guitar, with copies of Jingle magazine for lyrics and chords. I hope your film inspires a revival of this beautiful tradition!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree that the culture of singing in the Philippines did not come from karaoke. Karaoke is just a manifestation of a deeply ingrained singing culture going back as far as harana. We associate happy times with singing because it resulted in marriages and memories of having a great time in social settings. I say that the Filipino’s value of spending time with friends and family resulted in the culture of singing, rather than the other way around.

I am a Filipina/American from Hawaii. Your Harana music and songs of the three Tata's brought childhood memories growing up on the sugar plantation in the 40's through the 50's. We were entertained with this beautiful music at weddings, baptismal, and birthday celebrations. My eyes teared when I recalled my late Aunt sang "Ikaw" as well as other songs. Thank you for your informative and interesting documentary. I am forever your "FAN."😀

I forget if my mom, dad or grandpa told me about harana. Being in the States I know I may never experience it myself but this documentary lets me have a taste. My grandpa came with my mom & helped care for me as a child. 1933 siya so lahat ng Harana Kings remind me of him. I don't know if he did harana for lola but i can imagine. This let me feel close to him again & maybe also my ancestors in a way only music can. Salamat po🙏🏽💙

Maraming salamat Sir Florante for your art. When you played 'Bayan Ko' at 10:20, I cried and got goosebumps. I don't know why I got so emotional. It just touched my heart. Nakuha ng musika, ng bawat pagtipa mo sa iyong gitara ang loob ko, and suddenly the memories of my lolo flowed into my consciousness. He loves Harana songs. I miss him so much. Maraming salamat ulit Sir Florante. New subscriber here.

Watching this makes me happy and at the same time sad. I wish this tradition would go on. Although I myself sing and play guitar a little, I couldn't replicate these styles, but when I play old songs to my wheelchair-bound father (stroke patient), his eyes light up and his hand dances to the music, sometimes I see tears in his eyes. Thank you for this wonderful documentary. Edit: I followed you on Spotify and FB. I hope their recordings are available in Spotify ❤️

Tears welled up as I'm watching this documentary. Took me back to my childhood of simpler yet happily romantic times with sincerity in professing love through harana. No, I didn't get to experience this for myself but we had a beautiful househelp who lived with us for years. We regarded her as our eldest sibling and truly became a family. So many young men serenaded her on Friday or Saturday nights only as my father didn't want all of us be disturbed during school nights. On nights when the moon is out beaming her cool light on earth prompting the shadows sway quietly to the music, ohhhh how romantic! Even me at tender age of 6 or 7 felt that stirrings of being loved and feel love! Thank you Mr. Florante Aguilar for bringing this back to our consciousness. A traditional cultural Filipino practice that is becoming obsolete at worse forgotten. ❤
