Simply gorgeous. So different looking than the Thoroughbreds I watch race in America. Reminds me a little bit of an Arabian.

How much faster are they then the thoroughbreds?

I don't think they are. They ARE renowned for their incredible endurance but I have never heard that they are faster than the Thoroughbred. I know Quarter Horses can often beat Tbs at short distances but there's a reason TBs reign supreme in the flat racing world. I REALLY like the Akhal Tekes though. Stunning horses. I think I just might have to own one some day.

Speed indeed is relative and has a lot to do with distance and endurance. In terms of endurance Akhal Tekes and Arabs are almost unbeatable. While TB's still hold the world record for the fastest runners. A horse called Winning Brew won a race at a speed of incredible 70.76 km/h (43.97 mph) in 2008 in the US.

It all depends on your particular horse. The AT mare I had would outrun the retired TB racehorses that my friend had. She beat them by huge margins every single time we ran. She could also gallop for longer distances than the TB. If there was ever a breed built for speed and endurance, nothing beats an AT.

Mark Laymon actually Arabians are pretty good for speed and endurance too,they definitely give the akhal teke a run for its money,infact I think they might even have more endurance if they are not stressed and are properly cared for.Also the akhal teke isn’t really a fast horse compared to the Arabian.
