Starting with this speech, explore how far Shakespeare presents Macbeth as a violent character. Write about: • how Shakespeare presents Macbeth in this extract • how far Shakespeare presents Macbeth as a violent character in the play as a whole Macbeth is depicted as the king's noblemen by the captain this is seen through the "merciless" act of killing the traitorous and tyrannical Macdonwald by "fixing his head" the violent imagery of "fixing his head" reflects on how Macbeth is loyal to Duncan as he is the one who kills the Norwegians and saves Scotland which consequently also portrays his as a morally outstanding character in the eyes of the Jacobean audience. Conversely, this ultimately appears as a victory for Scotland but actually leads to Scotland's tragedy as Macbeth is the one "worthy to be a rebel", this foreshadows how he is going to proceed on his act to commit regicide which will lead to his moral failure and his deviation from Christian teachings. Shakespeare uses the construct of Macbeth and evokes that god will punish anyone through fate if they attempt to kill King James I who was appointed by god and consequently, they will be sentenced to hell. Shakespeare expresses how god condemns punishments to people who go against of Christianity, this seen through the construct of Macbeth's loss of the "innocent sleep" the adjective "innocent" symbolically gives connotations to how Macbeth has morally declined and became morally dark for killing Duncan through his free will and subsequently, he is more like the "serpent." Ironically In Act 1 scene 7, Lady Macbeth employs manipulation over her husband in order to kill Duncan so she can gain power in the patriarchal society. This is conveyed through her "dashing is brains out" of her child if it was still alive, if Macbeth went against the promise of making her queen, the violent imagery of killing their child forces Macbeth into committing the blasphemous act of regicide as this also creates a violent tone and its use is ironic as women weren't perceived as being violent people and additionally, Shakespeare could perhaps be creating this didactic play in order to portray how women don't deserve a place in society as they lead to other' tragedy through manipulation. However, Macbeth spreads the propaganda of Duncan coming to his castle to Lady Macbeth through the letter so she can manipulate and persuade him into killing Duncan and this exercises how his free will drives him towards his hamartia. Furthermore In Act scene 1, Shakespeare establishes Macbeth as an embodiment of malevolence through the alliteration of "come" and " clutch" when Macbeth wants the dagger, this suggests how wants to kill Duncan and is fighting his way towards his hamartia through the adjective "come". Macbeth goes against the great chain of being as he has the intentions of killing the king who is appointed by god and consequently, will be punished by god. In Act 2 scene 2, When god punishes Macbeth through guilt after killing Duncan, Macbeth requests "great Neptune's oceans" to wash the blood from his hands as he is driven mad this depicts him as requesting a pagan god's help and moreover, this illustrates him as an outcast as to Christianity as he is following another religion.
