It's not really looser. He's playing 5 beats in the time of 4. I think.

yeah it's insane. his focus on those over the barline quintuplets is as intense as it is necessary

No, that's right, he plays loose. His 5 is loose and he gets back on the beat every 2 or 4 bars. And the bridge is even looser (because it's not even 5 anymore), hence the problem of catching the beginning of the A' section with others.
