I wish there had been a microphone closer to the chimes. I could barely hear them. They are essential to this piece.

I can hear the chimes well in the first movement, where they feature most. I know they are harder to hear at the wonderful closing pages of the third movement, but the orchestration is so much louder at that point in the score, and they are still just audible, although not as strong as in some performances- though the player seems to be striking them quite hard.

This is a terrific performance but at 21.24 the conductor has the entire first violin section play the heavenly solo line. Did Janacek actually sanction this? I have only ever heard this alternative version once before, and that is the Neuman version from 1954 ( also on you tube). Not only does the moment lose its tender intimacy, but they're so out of tune, it simply exposes their limitations, because it's actually quite a tricky little solo. This 'ain't the Concertgebouw. maestro. What an embarrassing disappointment in an otherwise terrifically intense, committed performance.

As a 2nd violinist, I quite agree! We have few moments like this, and the poor 2nds here had to share! :p
