This song is one of my favourite songs to sing because it's always a technical challenge no matter how warmed up I am - sort of like a Geoff Tate song - but closer to what I think pure metal should sound like.

This also needs to be the theme song of an Odyssey movie. Symphony X should compose the score of an Odyssey movie.

And who the hell is tough enough to say that İron Maiden beats this or even compare any Maiden-song to this awesome masterpiece?! İ really love İron Maiden and it's really sad that the vocalist was diagnosed with cancer. But how the hell is anyone able to compare Progressive Metal to old classic Heavy Metal. İt's impossible to put these both genres into the same box. İron Maiden would be incapable of composing any song like The Odyssey and Symphony X would be incapable of composing any song like Maiden does. They both have their own strengths. İncomparable!

Ah, the good old arbitrary 'this band is better' metal debate. Regardless of the fact maiden and Symphony X are, musically, very different, there is no answer. This is more symphonic and more orchestrated than Iron Maiden's catalog. But one's taste is really the final determinant. This song is especially fun if you've read the poem. I'm assuming we're all familiar with it at least.

+Richard Farrell I'm sorry. Iron Maiden sucks. Just my opinion, of course. I mean, I respect the influence they've had on metal and the fact that they're one of the pioneering bands. But I don't like their music at all. And compared to Symphony X!??? Umm, that's like comparing a turd to a diamond.
@CaptainChard9 жыл бұрын
I meant that they're completely different genres and a comparison is meaningless. I absolutely love both Maiden and Symphony X. They are my two favourite bands so I definitely wasn't implying one was better than the other.
@TripleFermentation10 жыл бұрын
LOL. Maiden is incapable of composing or performing something even half as technical, creative, beautiful, and overall brilliant as this. It takes a ton of practise, studying, and even natural talent to be capable of composing music at this level. It's not just technical, but it doesn't follow anything conventional. The timing, phrasing, melodies, chord progressions, etc. are intentionally outside the box, and the only way to do that in a way that sounds as pleasing as this does is with an incredible understanding of music. Please... don't compare to Maiden.
@RektorMcQuack10 жыл бұрын
Yeah dude NEVER compare symphonic metal to progressive heavy metal... Maiden is one of the best bands in the world.
@samarhello9 жыл бұрын
TripleFermentation As much as I love this band. No. Maiden may not have the raw technical skill or the odd time signatures, but their songwriting ability is way up there, I have heard far more emotional and better written Maiden songs than this. I think there are Maiden songs that far surpass this in terms of overall brilliance. Just because a song isn't 24 minutes long doesn't mean it can't be a masterpiece. And don't forget, these are all opinions, but you're pretentiously parading yours around like it's fact.
@TripleFermentation9 жыл бұрын
I've been playing and studying music for 17 years. There's nothing wrong with enjoying Maiden more than Symphony X, but to claim that their song-writing ability is anything above novice-level, or even worse, better than that of Symphony X's, I take issue. It may speak to you more, and again, that's fine, but nothing they've ever written can touch the musical depth and adeptness of this and many other SX tracks. It's not just because this track is 24 minutes long and has odd time-signatures that it's great. Writing odd time-signatures isn't difficult, but constructing a song as competently as this is. It's also quite difficult to perform. IMO, SX's best work is the album V. If you'd like, let me know which song of theirs you feel is a good example of great song-writing, and I'll check it out :)
@samarhello9 жыл бұрын
TripleFermentation I haven't listened to V yet, but I have listened to a bunch of stuff from their other albums, that I bought. I love several songs from Paradise Lost, the song Iconoclast, everything from The Divine Wings of Tragedy except Sea of Lies. Technically, yeah, it's more impressive than Maiden. The riffs aren't super-amazing from what I've heard, and there's a lot of repetition between songs, although Romeo's excellent fills make any riff somewhat interesting. I see that they're a great band, but I would still rate Maiden higher, I'm just a sucker for some harmonies. As for examples, The Red and the Black from the newest album is (in my opinion) extremely well written. It knows what to repeat, and it packs a lot of variations on good ideas. The Thin Line Between Love and Hate, from Brave New World is a decent song, with some fantastic guitar melodies at the end. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, which is the title track on its album is extremely progressive, with about 4 minutes of some great (not Romeo level in terms of technicality, of course) soloing and some really cool harmonies.
@TripleFermentation9 жыл бұрын
When I used to like Maiden, Seventh Son and Brave were my favourite albums of theirs, with Thin Line being my favourite track on the latter. If you like the guitar lead harmonies, the Champion of Ithaca part of The Odyssey (this video) is a great homage to that ;)
@lopolik11 жыл бұрын
In my opinion this is better than what Maiden did. Nevertheless, Seventh son of a seventh son and Rime of the ancient Mariner are pretty close. :)
