As a student of 2 years of automotive schooling, let me give you guys some tips. A bad vacuum brake booster can trigger engine misfires due to exhaust air and contaminants leaking through the seals and traveling into the engine, clogging it up with dirt. Best bet is to have it replaced. Hope this helps!

I'm taking my 96 Chevy Silverado to have this fix this week. For the last week or so, my break pedal made a "swoosh" sound when it's pressed and is slow to rise back up, not bad, but slower where I notice it after driving it for 28 years. I've also noticed my MPG this week dropped to 10mpg from my typical 13-15mpg (lifted truck). I've also noticed a bit of a vibration, or shake. I thought it may be a wheel out of balance, but from what I've been reading, a bad Brake Booster disrupts the air mixture and can cause miss firing. So all these signs seemed to point me to it needs replaced. I think I could fix it myself, but I'm accident prone and there's always something that "goes wrong" when I try to fix stuff, lol. So I'm taking it to the pro i know on Wednesday. Commenting here in case others have similar symptoms and are wondering what their issue is.

The fact they "usually" last the life of the life of the vehicle is the reason I cant find one in ALL the auto part stores and warehouses. And all nearby Ford dealers has it on backorder. LKQ has one have to be shipped from a out of state junkyard. In the winter I found out my 4×4 didnt work. The locking front axle using vacuum pressure to work. Could it also be a symptom. 2 weeks later my brakes got stiff And you can hear hissing sound now it sputters and stalls at red light but, not so much in neural or at all in park. 08 Expedition Limited EL PS Jay Cee

I been having random off and on misfires only on idle when I start the truck. It’s been doing it since I bought the truck I can’t find what’s causing it I tried changing everything I could think of and I was watching this video because my truck brake pedal goes pretty low even tho I bled the breaks and put new break pads. Now I’m starting to think it could be my brake booster causing everything

I've done everything i can, I think. My 99 Chevy Tahoe runs fine for a while then it won't fire up. The 2 symptoms are always together in this case which are brake pedal is hard as a rock and truck won't start. When the pedal is hard, she won't crank at all, just dead. I'll wait a day or so, then she'll fire right up! After a couple months it will happen again. So I replaced the brake power booster, brake master cylinder, check valve and hose. I bled the brakes and hoped 1 or 2 of those things would do the trick but nope, after a couple months it does it again.. I've had 2 codes randomly show up then they seem to disappear from time to time. 1 code was an O2 sensor that I replaced and the recent code is cylinder 4. I have not dug into cylinder 4 yet but I'm hoping it's just a spark plug or harness. I have also noticed that in the couple years that I have had this truck, I have lost a lot of gas mileage. She used to get just over 400 miles on a full tank, now I'm lucky if she gets 310. I watched your video and I'm wondering about the leaky manifold since everything else has been replaced. I'm also thinking maybe a stuck caliper to which after a day or 2 it just unstucks itself in time. Well, that's a lot of info, any ideas? Haha.

I had some vacuum issues that i suspected were brake booster related. The car would surge forward sometimes while stepping on the brake ( it would literally try to accelerate) and also I had a rough idle that feels like it would stall. I changed my booster only and the surging issue has gone away but I still have these inconsisten shakes at idle. Could it be the check valve or what other component in the braking system would effect vacuum?

Blew my brake lines out on my 2003 Avalanche during a high speed stop on the freeway. Mechanic replaced the brake lines, afterwards and 4 trips back, truck was still not stopping correctly, pedal would go to the floor. Found another shop and after retelling my tale of disappointment, suggested I had either a leaking master cylinder or ABS pump due t how hard I hit the brakes. Replaced both, truck stooped like new. Until it started stalling out during braking and excessive pedal travel returned. Then brake boost warning comes on dashboard.....ugh.

when i press the brake pedal it doesn’t always come back into place and when that happens my car is in a stand still even tho my foot is off the brake. i have to use my foot to bring the pedal back into place and when i don’t do that, i hear grinding as the pedal slowly comes back into place on its own.

Yes! Pull out the check valve on the vacuum line running into the booster. It should then release the brakes. Funny you asked. I just watched a video on that. Now I get to feel like a hero lol

My 2015 Honda Pilot will have a very hard to push brake peddle after the car has set for a few hours in very cold weather colder than 10 degrees. This condition exists for the first few pushes, then the brake work normally. Additionally, anytime I push the brake peddle, it feels a little soft but firms up if I go for a 2nd push. Do you think this is a combination of the master cylinder and brake booster?

according to all the articles and videos, there is a leak in the diaphragm . the RPM jumps up and goes down to normal, the car goes forward 15 feet and stops. However it does not happen all the time, unpredictable. Why ? if the booster is replaced, will this happen again ?

Thought I would mention that my pedal started not coming back all the way enough to trigger brake lights...i dont use my 94 f150 much so I bungee .d it to steer wheel when parked...then it got worse and had to literally pull pedal back or brakes would be on. While driving...well...turned out my pedal was getting some rust on it where it swings under dash...it had once had a windshield leak and a drip..right on that spot...i figured that out after performing booster tests and it passed...go figure.

My question is if the hydroboost on my 2006 gmc yukon denali 1500 xl is leaking will this cause the front brakes to lock up after approximately 15 to 20 minutes of driving? Ive replaced all but 1 brake caliper for various reasons mostly due to age. I cant figure out why the brakes are locking up. Got any suggestions???

i have brak problem with my civic hybrid 2008... problem is brake pedal is normal and gentle there is no check light.... brake oil is on its level but still brake is not working as it takes longer to stop and while pressing the pedal with force the car stops with jerk on spot

I replaced my master cylinder and booster with a universal type that comes as a kit. It's an 8 in dual diaphragm booster. I've bled the system numerous times there's absolutely no air in the system, but when I start the vehicle the pedal goes almost all the way to the floor, but feels normal with the engine not running. It basically feels like there's a ton of air in the system, but there's not. I've re-bench bled the master and gone around all four wheels twice and got no air. The link rods are all adjusted properly as are the rear brakes. Could this be a bad new booster? I actually thought maybe the master was leaking internally and bypassing the seal so I replaced it with a new master cylinder and still have the same problem. I'm leaning towards buying a new booster now. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have a 2015 jeep Cherokee with low miles and the brake booster went out. Mechanic replaced it, went out again in 6 weeks. Replaced it again then said I needed to replace master cylinder…3 months later went out again and it’s currently at same shop for a week now. Jeep told him it’s a bad check valve but he thinks it’s due to recall W84 which is a transmission software flash…what is going on??

I have a 98 chevy extended cab 4x4 with the regular 5.7L engine. When it rains out (not under driving conditions) and the air is very moist outside the brakes in my truck get very touchy, I mean when you apply the pedal it can actually stop on a dime. It can almost throw you threw the windshield. This happens at any stage of the brake history ( new to old). Everybody seems to never see or just cannot correct the problem. What do you think ? either your calipers are locking up or the brake hose is acting like a valve meaning it's letting fluid in but not letting it back out. If you brake hard does your car pull to the left or right ?

@@josephoguike6738 sometimes the brake piston’s cylinders are not working properly, so either you have to clean the calliper or change the pistons(or calliper) itself. Because some rings may get loose over times, so as they start to heat up, they swell and brakes loose their pressure!!

I have a 2007 V6 2wd Tacoma and my brakes will randomly apply themselves and the only way to get them to release is to sit and wait or unplug the vacuum line from the booster. I'm on my second brake booster it's very odd.

​@@0ptimal It was the booster applying the brakes. Whenever they would apply themselves I would pull over, disconnect the vacuum line from the booster and they would release. This fix wouldn't last though. sometimes it would last a day while other times the problem wouldn't come back for weeks. I got replaced that booster with one I got from Auto Zone and it's been fine so far. It's been almost four years. It was the oddest problem ever. This problem always followed a dead battery. So the first time it happened I was leaving work and my battery was dead. I got a jump and the brakes locked up on the way home. The second time it happened years later I left my house to go to work and had a dead battery, got a jump and the brake pedal felt really weird and a week later the brakes started locking up AGAIN. I replaced the battery, had the truck scanned for any codes and didn't find anything. So far the Auto Zone booster is working fine and the pedal feels normal.
