These videos have been really helpful in my attempt to sync my Portastudio up with my DAW as a test run for using the sync on a Tascam 388. I figure if I can get it to work on the little guy, then big brother should be no problem. Thanks very much. Anyone trying this should be aware that REAPER will generate and sync to timecode internally, so you wouldn't need the MTC or the other programs. Been working great for me.

I have a Tascam 688 and want to know will that work with the same set up of what you have. I'm very interested in getting this done.. The only thing that the Tascam 688 do not have is the SUB inputs so I'm lost now..

Hey! I actually bought a 688 shortly after this video and have used it multiples times in sync with my DAW. It's wonderful as I have a lot more channels and the thing was NOS! I think I'll be making a video to show how to properly use it and sync it as it is a very complex couple of steps.

Logic pro x recieves MTC but does it stay in sync with the tape ? if the tape slows down will logic slow down too?

Do not touch the pitch wheel once the sync signal is recorded. The signal must stay the same throughout the entire session in order to keep things aligned and working. If you slow down the pitch wheel, it’ll will not slow down the audio but rather stop recording as the signal is no longer valid. You best bet is to record everything into logic and then use Varispeed to adjust the speed of your audio without destroying it or causing pitch issues.

Great video, thank you very much!! I am using a multitrack Fostex R8. Everything looks fine, just trying to get the perfect volume and Dolby C on. Because de volume is controlled by a mixer desk. Seems that I won't be able to make it with the noise reduction, but I don't give up. I can share my results!! Thanks again

@@NikosPage I am trying to use Fostex R8 así master, but I couldn't get it to work yet.I realice that the quality of the tape Is important. So I have to try again with a better quality tape, no so used as I have, because when I stripe the signal in a not used piece of tape, with dolby C off, it seams like it works!!! Thanks flor your answer!! I already have a Tascam 242 porta with dbx... And brand new tapes...

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! It works like charm, it works at 30fps too with my Yamaha MT8X (discovered accidentally). However I it would be awesome if someone could help me out with noise reduction on this machine (Yamaha). The problem I have is syncing only works with noise reduction off, regardless how I stripe the tape, with dmx off, or on it won't work. The manual states if I want to use dbx I need to turn of sync with dbx so dbx will be off on channel 8, but there is is still something going on. The sync button on the Yamaha supposed is really a dbx off for channel/track 8. I tried striping track 8 without dbx and turn it back on with the syncotion for playback, there is an audible change in the clock signal. I also tried striping with dbx on (with sync) and the timecode signal is still different than the pure (no-dbx) signal. I actually tried every combination, the only one that works it dbx always off. The good thing is that now I could probably whistle time code, I listened it too many times :D Anyways, is it my recorder busted or I do something wrong? BTW I don't plan to use dbx on the daily basis, bit it may have it's application, so I'd like to know how to to sort it issue out.

I know this comment is 6m old. Perhaps you already found a fix. DBX might like a stronger signal. It’s a pretty aggressive NR and my understanding is that it works by expanding the audio on playback, so you might find DBX pumps or flutters the recorded time code. My memories of timecode on my old Yamaha 4track are a bit foggy, but I don’t recall ever keeping my recoding levels low as recommended here….. I did get some crosstalk on the adjacent track, however DBX seemed to keep that to a minimum.

Hey dude, thanks for this video! I followed everything you outlined but still cannot get the daw to sync. I'm using a portastudio 488 and logic pro x. I get the stripe signal recored okay, and I can see it passing signal into logic and lockstep, but still no synchronization. I noticed that your lockstep was showing "recording", I can only get mine in the "online waiting" state. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for watching! Are you using an interface? If so, which one? You need an interface in order to receive the signal. If you are using an interface, make sure that it is selected in LTC Input and select the interface input Tape Out 4 is going to, I have Tape Out 4 ---> Interface Input 4, so I choose Input 4 in the LTC Input selection. Are you part of the "Tascam 424" Facebook Group or the "Portastudio and other 4 track Recorders" Group? You can message me there if you have any more issues or can't get this resolved!

Yes, I am using a MOTU 828 mkii as my interface and it is selected in LTC. I'm using a portastudio 488 mk ii, so for the "tape out 4" I'm using the "sync out" on the back of the machine and recording the stripe on track 8.
