For example he once ordered 186 prisoners to be shot in a football stadium while “Those were the days” played on speakers, the 150 who were shot were lucky, the remaining 36 were ordered to dig a ditch buried to their necks and for days red ants ate them alive. This happened on Christmas Eve of that year so there were rumors of the guards ordered to wear Santa costumes but that one is not really known. Oh yeah he also kept the national treasury underneath a hut in the middle of nowhere.

Both were equally terrible in terms of the misery and destruction caused. Both countries were the very definition of hell on earth in the 1970s. However, and I hate to say this, one could possibly make the argument that Pol Pot, no matter how egregiously brutal his regime was, at least had good intentions in his youth. He genuinely wanted to make Cambodia an egalitarian nation, but power, delusion and paranoia ultimately led to what became the Cambodian holocaust. On the other hand, Macias Nguema had absolutely zero redeeming qualities whatsoever. He really was the worst of the worst from day one.

No…that was the first president of Equatorial Guinea. He was one of the bloodiest dictators of Africa during the 70’s and was to put it lightly batshit insane….like so much that even his nephew was scared enough of him to overthrow him.
