(28 Aug 1978) Governor Carlos Romero Barcelo of Puerto Rico told the United Nations Decolonisation Committee on Monday, (28 August) that his island is not under the "thumb" of the United States. The governor, who heads Puerto Rico's Pro-Statehood Party, took the floor as the first speaker in the four-day debate of the committee which had declared the island a US "colony", when adopting a Cuban resolution in 1973. Referring to Cuba, Romero said he was sure "you are all aware of the ulterior motives that have prompted one member of your committee to bring this issue before you". As Puerto Ricans in the packed galleries screamed applause and booed, Committee Chairman Salim A Salim of Tanzania warned that further sessions of the debate would be held behind closed doors if public did not restrain itself in the future
