Hey, everyone! I hope you enjoyed Grant's playthrough of my latest project. I'm calling it a roguelike but I'm using the term pretty loosely. It has randomized level order rather than procedural generation (I doubt the latter is truly possible in SC2), but it does have permadeath and short runs. If you played game like Darkest Dungeon and Slay the Spire, the inspirations should be pretty obvious (Grant learned that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer on his first run). Anyway, this is pretty close to the release version. I'll be doing some more testing and tweaks here and there, but overall what you see is what you get. This map has a ton of replay value with 24 heroes, 5 difficulties and 13 different battlegrounds in randomized order, so I think players who like this kind of thing will really enjoy it. I expect Azeroth Battlegrounds will be publicly available this Saturday 20th July, so look forward to that! Thanks for stopping by and let me know if you have any questions or feedback. Happy Birthday Grant Also a lot of modern rogue likes have some sort of mechanic where you get to choose between multiple paths and their rewards for the next Stage (popularised by Hades). I'd recommend adding 2-3 portals, each with a preview of the adjective the stage will have (e.g. attack, defend, etc..), as well as the type of reward you will get (e.g. item, money, tome, etc...).

Unfortunately map space is somewhat limited so that kind of variety would have to involve either constant terrain re-use or a lot of loading screens.

Thats kinda unfortunate as probably the biggest issue I see with the mod is that only 13 stages is really limited, and I can see it getting repetitive very quickly.

Honestly Grant that first attempt was pretty good; the only mistake you really made was not picking Mirror Image to help prevent damage, as reducing how much damage you take is pretty key to surviving in roguelikes. It's not like you could have known what round 1 was going to be of course, but we live and learn. Also with your question about "Is the Far Seer bad?", not really, you just got every roguelike player's bane of the crappy run. You were getting like, no items that synergised with him which makes any run so much harder.

Any hero with (usable) summons is really good, ranged attacks are pretty good most of the time, and Farseer doesn't have any crippling downsides until lvl7. Archmage is one of the easiest heroes to play with a very similar kit.

@@Photoloss i think that the pit lord would be great. High AOE, his ult deals massive damage and includes a super great summon, also has damage mitigation, not only for him but the whole team, i would like to use it

@@martin-dw Haven't tried him but at a glance I'd say he's mid. Summons matter most on the early levels, being forced into melee can still suck, few scenarios really lend themselves to cleave and it overlaps with Rain of Fire (itself less focused than Blizzard, and less spammable on a STR hero) and Howl being a single pulse doesn't work too well with the tug of war maps. Also everything in the final boss stage might be immune to Doom, denying you access to the summon as well. Certainly not the _worst_ though, pre-6 DH is rather miserable, PotM is boring and MK can be strong but can go wrong quickly due to his abysmal mana pool.

@@martin-dw I haven't tried all the heroes but so far I've had the easiest most consistent clears on Archmage. Water Elementals stomp everything lvl1 and provide a massive safety buffer, Brilliance Aura lets you spam recklessly, and Blizzard speeds some things up. Also ranged, which goes great with all the orbs (and Rusty Mining Pick+Assassin's Blade) you tend to get lategame, and high base movespeed helps you get out of tricky situations. Would be nice to have a useable ultimate but an actually good one would be stupidly OP on him. But honestly anyone who can plink away with ranged attacks has a massive advantage in some scenarios, and any ranged hero who can additionally put a meatshield in front OR obliterate a bunch of trash mobs with AoE should have no issues. Archmage can do all 3.

its crazy how much that first mission is basically just a singleplayer pve moba. ive always really wanted someone to make one of those (i would have paid good money for a singleplayer campaign of Heroes of the Storm). idk if this is just me but if Synergy ever made a kickstarter to make a standalone version of this but with bigger maps or warchasers but with multiple maps you have to survive thru (like this), my money would fly out of my pockets (PS grant should play sc2 warchasers on stream/yt sometime)

Seems like fun. Back in like 2010 or something i bought a copy disc of frozen throne. And it had a biiig pack of custom maps added on top of base game. And there was that one map which was just a huuge city flooded by monsters where you chose a hero at start and your goal is to clear the whole city. Map was quite interesting as there was a lot of items to collect, buy or get from boss enemies. You leveled only from killing spawner structures so you can't cheese level. And levels would'nt stop on usual limit, they got extended by general passive traits. If only i remembered what map it was. There was also other one which was basically an RPG. You controlled one hero and no more units, all other units are ai controlled. You played starting from basic soldier. And as you leveled through maps you trasformed into a commander then knight on horse, then a dude with big hammer while getting special skills not present in base game. And it had quite decent story too, with side quests that rewarded you extra xp and items, some of which also custom not from base game. It was so so good map pack.

@@FenekkuKitsune When i played that city clear map as a kid i thought "why is it so damn hard at start". I had no access to internet and didn't even know games can be played with other people through internet) I just somehow pushed through first camps and later it got managable cause you level up and get items. Actually the difficulty was what made it interesting for me at the time.

The first one sounds like WarChasers, which is an official 4-player Blizzard scenario map that came with the game (I think the base game, but Frozen Throne also had a lot more scenario maps included). The second might be Twilight's Eve, although there are a lot of similar single hero RPG maps (Eclipse ORPG, The Black Road, Gaia's ORPG to name a few).

Happy bday! Regarding round 1: If my moba days don't fail me, I think you are not really supposed to tank the minion waves. Let the archers take most of the dmg, weaving in and out to hit stuff. Most likely you will build a wave that damages the enemy buildings. Repeat until win.

7:07 Technically you mean Rogue- _lites_ , Rogue-LIKES have no meta-game progression, everything is available from game 1 and only game and mechanical knowledge(or lack thereof) restricts the player, it is in Rogue-lites that you are rewarded incremental power scaling and rewards for spamming runs until you unlock everything.

Glad you liked the WarChasers heroes! Those were modified from the ones on the original WC3 map, so I didn't come up with those all on my own. But I have been thinking about making new custom heroes to use on a new map. I even thought about doing that for this project, but I feel it's already got enough replayability with 24 heroes, and new content would be better used on a new project.
