Excellent clarification between Replicate, Snapshot, Hyperbackup! Just what I was looking for. Thank you!

a small question, which is better for outsite backup? Hyper backup or snapshot replication? and what's different?

Great video, since I am not sure how to backup my docker container or clone them to another synology. I might use the video to create a save point for my synology

@SpaceRexWill Thanks for all your great videos always learning something new! One thing I don't understand about a replication is the location of the DSM (OS). I recently had my main NAS fail with a volume failure that could not be repaired. I ended up reinstalling DSM and restored with Hyper Backup. I now have a 220+ that I replicate my shares to in case I need to do a failover. If I have another hardware failure and reinstall DSM, will "Failing over" restore apps and settings or is that part of the DSM configuration backup (in Update/Restore section)? I don't know how to restore my DSM to a base unit but have all my personal settings for both the DSM OS and APPs installed. If the DSM configuration backup restores the DSM settings will a failover restore the apps with the data folders or is it strictly failing over the contents of the share? Is there a basic Hyperbackup task I could create that would quickly restore my base DSM system (no data) and then failover the data or even restore with Hyperbackup the most critical share to improve downtime? Thanks!

What rights should be granted to the snapshot user? Does it have to be admin?

When you set up the Replication to a different Synology NAS, does the account you specify on the "target" NAS need to be an admin account? Or can it be just a regular user account? If the latter, is there any special access required for that user account regarding files and/or applications?
@SpaceRexWill

It will have to be an admin

Interesting video! I currently use "shared folder sync" to keep two remote Synologys at the same state, is Snapshot Replication a superior version of that pretty much?

Hi There, please can you make a video on how to convert the file system from EXT4 to BTRFS on a 2 bay NAS, speifically DS218 Play. I have got just over 600Gb of data on it and I can't find a much info on the net that fills me with confidence in trying it out myself. many thanks

I've successfully setup replication on my two nas' (DS920 -> DS418) Works great. Currently, both shares are compressed. My question is, can I set my production share to uncompressed, leaving the target compressed? Since i do 4k video, I need a quick read time.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. BTRFS is likely sending the data compressed in the snapshot form. If you are video editing compression likely will do nothing and probably worth it to disable

hi spacerex, i had 1 problem that i'm facing, is that the "Snapshot Replication" doesn't replicate the latest ACL (Access Control List). Example = Folder "A" has 1 user with read-only access, but i recently added a new user with write access in the SOURCE nas, but after the replication task completes, i only see 1 user with the read-only access instead of 2 users) in my DESTINATION nas. How can i fix this?

You have to have your user auth on something like an LDAP server to do this

I want to have an exact NAS clone at two separate locations. I have to work from both of those and want to take advantage of the local LAN speed versus pulling large files across internet. Any change I make in one location I want replicated to the other bi-directionally. I control the router/firewall in one location but not the other though I could ask to open a port. How would I do this?

Appreciate your great info! Can I set up Synology Drive ShareSync with a remote Synology NAS, then set up BTRFS Replication in the remote NAS? In that way, both NAS can be sync with both read and write actions, and both have replications setup.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
You can do this, however it will not be as bullet proof as this. For example if drive failed to sync a file for some reason it would not be backed up. However for a non mission critical setup its totally fine!

Please HELP! I JUST BOUGHT A SYNOLOGY DS220J WITH TWO 4T DRIVES THAT I WANT TO USE RAID1, OR SHR BASICALLY. THE SYNOLOGY SEEMED TO HAVE MADE a storage pool and volume FOR ME AUTOMATICALLY in set up screen,oops caps sorry, but it made the SHR using ext4, which all of the vids I've seen said to use btrfs. Now that I see this bug happened....should I keep it as synology made it, can I not have btrfs ever now....or can I delete the pool and or volume and do it again manually and choose btrfs. I am STUCK at this point, I don't want to go forward without knowing! Thanks so much in advance

Hello, can you please give an information about disk quotas in btrfs system in Synology? In the filesystem is btrfs, is it possible in synology to use group and user quoatas or not anymore?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 жыл бұрын
So I don’t think you can do quotas with a BTRFS send, but you can use quotas everywhere else

@@SpaceRexWill Thank you for your answer, can you check please in your Synology, how the quotas working with btrfs. I mean quotas for users and groups. I mean if the filesystem is btrfs then quotas for users and groups are unavailable?
