Let’s be honest. Network Attached Storage (NAS) is much the same as any other kind of consumer-available technology, in that every few years a brand will release the latest hardware in its portfolio and buyers will IMMEDIATELY start comparing it versus its predecessor. New vs Old, Launch Price vs Discount Deals, Cutting Edge vs Well Established - regardless of your own motivation, then are a whole bunch of reasons why someone will be comparing the Synology DS1522+ for 2022 versus the 2020 released DS1520+ NAS. Today I want to take a closer look at these two NAS systems from the big brand in NAS drives and compare their strengths, their weaknesses and ultimately help you decide which one deserves your data right now. Let’s begin.
Note - Depending on when you are reading this, the availability of the DS1522+ or DS1520+ will be different. So, regardless of which one of these two NAS systems best sounds like it suits your needs, it is paramount that you remember that your data should be backed up at all times. So do not just leave your data in an insecure or unsafe state in favour of waiting for either of these NAS to arrive. Unless your data is in at least 2 separate copies (NAS, close, USB, etc), it is NOT backed up! If you need help, you can use the free NAS advice section HERE.

2022 I wouldn't buy any NAS that doen't have at least 2.5GbE, Synology never learn! edited, I'll just add that by any I mean anything over 4 bay which I consider upper end of consumer market, There is no excuse we are paying a lot for 5 bays and over, Should be at least 2.5GbE, Keep 1GbE for the budget end under 4 bays. I have a DS 1019+ 5 bay which has been great going on 3 years, But when it's time for a new one there is no way I will accept 1GbE again for this size NAS.

Great video. I have the 1520+ and was wondering if I needed to think 'upgrade'. As a home user, the answer appears to be no. I have link aggregation to a smart switch and then direct to my AMD 5750 system. Storage includes 2x 1TB MLC NVMe for r/w cache and 4x 8TB Iron Wolf Pro drives. Performance as a single user is absolutely outstanding (I do animation, processor design and data science in my home office). The 10Gb is hard to justify as a single-user but I still look on with a certain amount of envy! Anyhow, many thanks for the definitive guide to differences between the two machines!

My DS1520+ with 5 Seagate EXOS 12TB/14TB drives, dual (raid'd) Samsung 970 EVO+ M.2 cache drives, and a Crucial dual rank 2400mhz 16GB DIMM (20GB total) is much better suited to my use case than the 1522. Video transcoding via hardware AND a cool running package that uses relatively little power. Now for Synology to stop bricking machines like mine just because they use quality DIMM's from other manufacturers. Which is why I'm not on DSM7.1 yet. *UPDATE* I'm on DSM7.1 and Synology is still permitting me to run my Crucial RAM.

Not only that, the ports in general are far too few, the la write performance is catastrophic and the design is also catastrophic. A dust catcher without equal. Just like all the other models 918 plus or 920 plus or 420 or or or. They are on the left and right and at the bottom they all have openings where dust is sucked in. And above all, at the front it is almost completely open with these huge gaps. Mine stood in the living room for a month and already had dust on the mainboard. Before that I had the 413j for seven years, there wasn't even a bit of dust in it, and my last disstation also broke due to the damn traffic jam, although I still had warranty, but outside of the USA you don't get customer support.

It should have included 10Gbe, and not made it an option. For 10Gbe they want $150 more? I am still running my DS1512+ which says a lot about the quality of their products. At the same time, it says a lot about their overly conservative approach to H/W that this model, a decade newer, really has very little more to offer. I know I'm not upgrading without 10 Gbe. Maybe the 1523+, or 1524+, or ...? Any bets?

@badpants
@badpants 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz If you don't care about 10Gbe then the DS920+ is a good 4-bay for $550. The DS1522+ is not available yet, but it's $150 more than the DS920+, has an extra bay for more storage or a hot-swap drive, and it at least gives you the option to upgrade to 10Gbe in the future. I'd skip the DS1520+ because it's being replaced by the DS1522+ and they're the same price. The DS1522+ should be available in a few weeks.

For less money than the 1520/1522 I’m running an i5 12600K overclocked with 32GB DDR4 & 10GB NIC running VM’s & Plex Server & all my Docker containers. Overkill I know but I don’t have to think about replacing it for years to come especially when I sell on my 12th Gen for a 13th Gen i7 13700 non K in 6ish months time.

Thx for all the informations, sometimes a bit hard to follow because of the repetition and the mix information between comparison vs description. At the end what I keep in mind is no embedded gpu support for the new one and for a home user like me it matters. I'm not sure if I miss something but I think you didn't talked about the disk support. If I understood correctly it's also a new concern with synology pushing the use of is proprietary disk!?

Hi guys, excellent video, unfortunately I just got my SD 1520+, it is awesome with excellent streaming capabilities, unfortunately my nas got crazy to the point that I have to let the Synology technicians try to fix it remotely, unfortunately they couldn't and we have to reset the network, after that I did ask the technician why went I tried to register my nas and paid for the 2 extra years of warranty the site says I cannot because this ds 1520+ has been discontinued, but is not the case with older models, and the technician told me that this model have a few problems with the hardware and around or after 2 years some of them get broken and for that Synology not only discontinued this ds 1520+ but they also don't want to deal with exchanging this unit, and as this technician told me is being a lot of replacements world wide, unfortunately he recommended me that if I can change it just go and do it, the chances of losing my investment in a short time are big, he recommended me to go to the ds 920+ but as I have 5 drivers I can't, so he say the other solution is or remove 1 drive and get the 920+ or upgrade to the 162xs+, well.... it is a huge chunk of money just swapping, but I think I will, I am not a IT guy or video editor, or with a company with a lots of TBs in info, but I have and planning to have tones of 2k and 4k family videos, photo albums, I have very good knowledge in tech. I know this Ds1621xs+ is probably more than what I need but I love to stream my videos from my phone, without wires, we are a family of 5 and basically all of us save our memories using the photo app, video app, this apps can order everything in chronology order, by day and year, that's why I need something reliable, to preserve my family's memories. Also I just tell you guys all this because I don't want you to lose your information with this 1520+, it is bad, I was really impressed how this guy streams my 4 k video no latency and smooth, now it is up to you guys, if you guys want to confirm this just call this number in the Americas (Synology): 1(425)2963177 , unfortunately this issue is not stated in any Synology information letter, unless I didn't see it, it is bad because most vendors still selling this guy at the regular price and that's not good, I will return this tomorrow at B&H at NYC and will inform them about this information at least I will have some peace in mind, guys be safe, GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!! and spread the VOICE, it is the only way to protect our selfs as a consumers.

IF your using the nas only to play 4k hdr iso for kodi/emby is the 1522 better than the 1520 if there is no out of home streaming? Is the extra speed really that much! Assume if your using extender that would be faster with the upgraded i Ethernet card?

ECC will detect/correct a single error in RAM only; implying that ECC will prevent/correct 'bit rot' on/in one's drives (and therefor one's data) is ....uh, well ...not correct. :) (Alas, ECC is not a ZFS data scrub)

After banging my head between these two devices I could not bring myself to justify that I'd still be spending that extra coin to have a single 10Gbe plus initial cost but lose out on a overall superior Cpu that can blast threw a Plex media server and other media related applications. It's actually pretty disappointing but I'd only be able to barely justify the DS1522+ in a Office environment and just barely at that. As a home media(Plex) and storage solution The Ds1520+ just makes a lot more sense, add 2 Tb of Nvme for a great price these days and you have a beast, even two years later. Case closed
@Mister__Jey
@Mister__Jey 2 жыл бұрын
I can only strongly advise against this, just like the 920 + or the 420 + or or or. The best thing to do would be to buy the J. series because these are dust collectors without end and that's disastrous for a NAS. Because this design here has all the openings on the left and right and bottom where dust is sucked in, unlike the J. series, and also it's kind of open in the front, it has huge gaps. I had my NAS in the living room for a month and there was dust everywhere on the hard drives and there was already traffic jams on the mainboard. My 413j model, which I've had for seven years, hasn't once had dust inside the case in all seven years. Because it is completely closed and there is only air in the front. Chris has. And you can always sweep or vacuum the dust. That is not the case with this model. So absolutely unsuitable, they are needed to break and you should maybe watch a dub on the balcony, and I'm looking at it at the moment because I don't play this game anymore, after two and a half years I already had defective records because of this shit Dust, and Synology doesn't do customer service outside of the US, although they still guarantee it. It's complete

...........@NASCompares: Is it possible and does it make sense - to buy the DS1522 and placing in SLOT1/2 (2x HDD Seagate Exos x16 with each 14GB) and on SLOT3/4 (2x SSD with each 1TB). The 2 HDDs should be used for long term Data and they should be copied for security! The 2 SSDs should be used as HomeCloud Storage for the daily Work on Files where sometimes 2 or 3 Users will open Files Simultaniously. And the SSD should be also copied on the second SSD for DataSafety. Is this possible and a good idea, or how would you do such a thing? I also could buy a Raspberry and install HomeCloud etc.!? Or i could use a FritzBox 9590 with a SSD drive via USB as HomeCloud (but without the possibility to copy the Data on a second SSD).
