Hi everyone! Just a quick note that the originally recorded on this video was around 2.5 weeks before the DS1522+ was formally released by Synology and therefore some areas of TBC or position on HDDs by the brand have been fully confirmed/clarified now (see my recent review). Additionally, I just noticed that the TS-464 product image is the TS-464T4!! I know, I know. This was an error during processing and the images in my archive both have the TS-464-front.png prefix and not noticed till now. It is especially annoying, given that the TS-464 is on the table during the record and now, as I compose this, the DS1522+ is right here too! I might revisit this video with an update if you guys feel it warranted. Let me know if you think I should. Thanks for watching and have a lovely week!

@ Exactly. QNAP dragging the heels bigtime

The answer is obvious - Celeron ftw! Couple that with no harddisk restriction and 2.5GbE, this is a no brainer. Unless the user can't do without SHR or DSM, I do not see the reason to stick with Synology.

Thanks for this video (and many others), NASCompares / Robbie! I noticed a mistake that I thought I'd point out: at 27:29, you accidentally said that Synology's platform needs to prove itself to a lot more people, but you meant QNAP.

Thank you for the video. Exactly wanted to see but for QNAP actually looking at the TS-664 with 6 bays. I was all set to move forward with the Synology but then Drive compatibility got in the way. I mistakenly did not check if the 16TB Seagate EXOS was compatible with it before ordering them (thanks for bringing it up!). So I think they will work with QNAP. I currently own an older TS-419P II so I actually trust them greatly. Just wish the had a five-bay solution.

😀 Wow ... Simply an amazing video on the strengths and weakenesses of Synology and QNAP. Very WELL Done! Appreciate your assessment and incredible descriptions of these products!

Damn you!! I had all but made up my mind to get a DS1520. Not the 22, I wanted the Intel chip. But after watching this I need to have a look at the TS-464. I like the idea of 2.5GBe and supported 16GB ram. What complicates things is I have a DS218+ and I'm used to DSM. I also like SHR but am unlikely to mix and match HDDs, but it's a good option to have.

Which way did you end up going? I'm currently between the ts464 and the Synology 920+ to be my first Nas, but I think I'll go Qnap, as the hardware is a lot better & I'll most likely use Plex anyway
@harri30202 жыл бұрын
I bought the DS1520+ and couldn't be happier with it. As a home user, using it for storage, Plex and share folders, I realised the higher QNAP specs would make no difference to me, so it came down to software, and no contest, IMO. SHR was also a deciding factor, letting me upgrade capacity 1 or 2 drives at a time, and I think that will happen sooner rather than later. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to fill that extra storage space!

@@harri3020 do you not use hardware encoding? My family is going to watch the content on many different devices, hence Im planning to get a cpu with integrated graphics 🤔 and the 2.5gpe ports seem way more future proof imo vs the 1gbpe on the 920+
@harri30202 жыл бұрын
@@Lucaemar no, I never felt the need to get Plex Pass. We're a household of two adults, so don't face the bandwidth challenges you likely do.

Synology only have one thing going for it at this point, software. That said this one is a ridiculous product, so in comparison go for the QNAP..... ANY QNAP.
@sow4now2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comparison. In March '22 Deadbolt hit Lex Fridman's Synology. How might this impact your security comparison?
@evankolpack Жыл бұрын
This was a QNAP exploit, not a Synology. TMK Syno has had no major issues on this kind of scale. Deadbolt was HUGE....affected many people and institutions worldwide.

Is it possible to buy a Synology DS1522 and add just 1 hard drive to start with. Then later, add a second hard drive and change to RAID 1. Then later buy a third hard drive and change too RAID 5?
@nascompares2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. But you will need to select SHR off the bat to ensure the smoothest migration as you add drives

The war is over imho, QNAP has almost everything over Synology these days. It is almost like Synology either surrendered or bet the farm that the users would continue to blindly follow them. In the ivory tower I'm sure someone said 'hey I know how to save a bunch of money and double the bottom line' then every said yes before they clearly understood the implications. Big companies do stupid stuff like this all the time, esp if they are venture cap funded or public. All Synology has in their arsenal is a slicker/more responsive interface and the ability to mix drives... not a great poker hand, it is just stale/stagnant for many. QNAP hardware is almost always better in every tier, QNAP has a ton more features and capabilities that provide a real material difference. 2.5gbe, since all my devices are 2.5 it makes a real performance difference that I notice, containers are super easy and can do a lot, I use Libreoffice in a container, QNAP Club has almost any application to do neat things (Sonarr, email server, business applications) that add functionality not available else ware, SSD options (pool/tier/cache) that offers some nice options for storage/performance, One touch button for backup is really handy and is part of my backup process, 3.2.2 USB is really fast for backup, HD KVM options are great for surveillance, 8 cam licenses, etc., etc.. Synology products are WAY underpowered/old tech and WAY over priced. 1 gbe ethernet? What did they save to do something so stupid, a $1 a unit? This is and will continue to hurt Synology until someone wakes up and puts effort to correct their line up and actually try to compete/innovate and not lock users to their nonstandard hardware and bleed major dollars for 10gbe, memory, hdd's. They can hide and say these cpu's put focus on the business market, when they are just crappy cpu's in AMD's lineup they got a sweet deal on. I really like NASCOMPARES and watch all their videos, but Synology needs some major correction imho it is 2022 and they need a wake up call. I predict from what I'm seeing that their users will either keep what they have or jump ship, my small sample of people has 3 leaving for QNAP, so I suspect it is more prevalent than one might suspect.
