As of 4-21-2022, I am looking at buying a DS1618+ that for sale locally. would you recommend this as a backup and plex server? I don't have a need for constant availability, just photo backups, documents, music and movies.

how do you connect 2 10gb network cards? Whats the benefit over 1 network card in 10gbe? Is it for link aggregation?

It was a funny setup actually. It's simply because I ran out of 10GBE ports on my 10GBE switch (only had 2 10GBE ports and rest was 1GBE) so I added a dual 10GBE card to my computer and accessed them via different subnets (if that right?). Recently (video coming) I've just installed a 12 port 10GBE switch into the office so I can connect to everything more easily while using my motherboards built in 10GBE port. Hope this helps :-)

I have a DS1618+ with a 10Gb ethernet card installed. I recently tested the throughput using iPerf3 using a Docker container, and I can only get ~5Gb/s throughput. On my other computers connected to the same 10GB switch, I consistently get ~9.8Gb/s throughput between them, but not on the Synology. Same 10Gb Ethernet card as on my other computers. Have you tested this or have any ideas why the 5Gb/s throughput?

I have the ds1618+ with an Intel x520-DA2 in it. The NAS does have a pci-e 3.0 8x lanes connector, but electrically it's only pci-e 3.0 x4 lanes. So the total bandwith is only half when used with a pci-e 2.0/3.0 8x lane device.

@@wiel-spin Thanks for the explanation. Make sense. Is the Intel x520-DA2 also an 8x lane card?

@@nottoday5773 Hmmmm probably about 18tb x 6 = 108TB without expansion unit. Probably 200TB with expansion unit full.

Hello, I am about to buy the DS1618+ and use it as a media server, my question is about the 4 lan ports, what are they good for? does it make any difference if I connect the nas via 1 lan cable to the router or if I connect 4 lan cables to a lan spliter to the router?
@techable7524
@techable7524 4 жыл бұрын
The 4 ports are for redundancy and link aggregation, or to connect to multiple switches. I just connect via 1 cable and I'm all set :-)

HI, I have the ds1618+, I have just installed a 10gbe card on this and my main pc, both connected through a 10gbe switch. I run an iperf3 speed test but am not getting more than 1gb speeds. Is there something I need to set to get 10gbe speeds? Do I still need a 1gbe connection as well? Many thanks.

What cable are you using? Should be atleast CAT6A under 100m in length. Also, check the network interface tab and click the 'configure' button and look into 'service order'. If no joy use only the IP of the 10GBE connection and unplug then 1GBE cable if using.

Nice review . I have multiple HDDs , from multiple vendors and with different capacities(1, 2and 4TB ) and caches (16, 32 and 64 MB). Is that a problem for Synology DS1618 ? Or it has to be identical drives ? Also , what is the maximum HDD size per bay that it can handle ?
@techable7524
@techable7524 5 жыл бұрын
No problem at all, you can just plug them in and wait for them to appear in the main admin area! RAID may be a little tricky but the RAID size will probably be the smallest of the drives. I'm pretty sure the max per bay is 16tb, as they update their firmware when bigger drives come on the market.

@Happy.Smurf If you use SHR as your RAID type, you can use more than only the size of the smallest drive. SHR is something like multiple RAID5 across all the different drives. If you have for example two 2TB and two 4TB drives, than it creates a 6TB RAID5 (+2TB Parity) across all drives and an additional 2TB RAID1 (+2TB Parity) across the 4TB drives. But this process is hidden, so you can see only a single 8TB RAID volume. You can use this calculator to check the final size of your specific configuration: www.synology.com/de-de/support/RAID_calculator Of course SHR has downsides, too. But this will be only visible if you like to use 10G. This is because of the multiple RAIDs in the background it depends on the location of the file how fast it can be up- and downloaded. As in my example the speed decreases after the NAS has been filled with 6TB of data so all following files are written to the smaller RAID1 with the performance of two HDDs in total (200 - 500 MB/s depending on the drives). And of course rebuild processes are much slower as it is a much more complex situation compared to a simple RAID5.

Great Review ! i have a lot of 4K Videos, and i have a 4K BD Rip Movie files (with dolby Atmos audio). + my personal photos and files. 1- what do you recommend DS1019+ or DS1618+ ? 2- what kind of HDD/SSD do i have to get for the best speed ? what model do you recommend ?( i want to do RAID 1) 3- what is the best practice if i want to do video editing ? should i copy the files to the pc from the NAS then work on them ? Thanks so much !

Sorry for the late response! But will help where I can... 1 - DS1618+ as not used the DS1019+ - the DS1019+ has no 10GBE so a cache is nice but you're still stuck at limited bandwidth. 2 - I have 1 pure SSD DS1618+ and one hybrid (SSD, HDD). My hybrid uses 1 1TB ssd for fast stuff in first bay, 2 6TB (raid 1) for raid and 'backups' and also 2 16TB IronWolf Pro in without raid as these are backup drives and storage for raw video files (not very important to me). Looking back I'd go for a the 8 bay version now for more options. 3 - I'd try dumping all your raw footage into the NAS first and work on them from there. Be sure to check where the performance degrades as will probably be the video compression slowing things down rather than bandwidth. H264 is still choppy on my 32 core 3970X when scrubbing the timeline. Hope this helps :-)
