One is $200 and the other is 3x that - wondering which is best lol

I bought the DS223j and I'm generally happy for the price but what really bugs me is that the thing never seems to hibernate the drives. Even if there's no device on my network contacting the NAS for hours it keeps the drives spinning seemingly in hopes something would soon read or write something to it, creating a sustained power draw of 18W. My old super cheap Seagate PersonalCloud did that too but I hoped that a company as big in the game as Synology would solve that better.

I heard that keeping the drives spinning is less taxing on them.

That is a good thing, apparently. Hibernating wears down the disk.

@@lastnamefirstname2390 Why should it wear down when turning off when not in use for hours on end. I agree that it would be bad for the drive to turn off and on again all the time but thats not what im talking about. It's like saying, it would be bad for a car engine to be turned off at every red light but that doesn't mean it would be a good idea to let the engine running over night just to have it ready to drive to work in the morning and then let it run again all day at work to drive home after 8 hours

@@Jutsch80HD The spinning up part ist stressind the drive so thats why it´s less stressing for the drive. This comes from a google paper where they tested which drives died early and what the coralation was.

Great video. I’m thinking of getting the 223j for storage use only. But the 723j sounds good and future proof

There is a substantial difference in price though. €199 vs €489 in my country.

That's more than double!

@@Techfluencer Yeah it's not nothing. I would probably go for the cheapest option. But do I need it? I was looking for an external device to store some KZbin and Twitch edits. I do need a fair amount of space. I have an internal 8Tb HDD specifically for that purpose. But it slows down things. And in the long run it's probably not gonna be enough space. So I'm looking for another option. And an important detail, the drive is NAS compatible. What do you reckon? Are there better cheaper options? Or do I go for the NAS.

Its about the same in the US on Amazon is $189 for the DS223j and nearly $500 or more for the DS723+. Cost wise its not even close. I'm more than likely buying the DS223j. I'm only getting this for myself so I can have my digital media off of my main computer.
