Thanks for this....I was just looking at what was available for a customer...Synology has always been very good....Well explained!!

And if you invest another roughly $300USD, you can buy the Synology 10Gbe network adapter and a desktop Thunderbolt to 10Gbe powered adapter and have a dedicated 10Gbe connection between the MacBook and the Synology NAS and have Zero speed lag compared to a USB connect SSD. I get transfer speeds around 1.1 to 1.2 GB/s using this setup, with sustained Read and Write speeds around 1.1GB/s Read and 970MB/s Write.

That’s the next step for me.

@@jeradtech but wouldn't the HDD be a bottleneck ?
@danielmcgowan95347 ай бұрын
@@xville8642 Maybe. He has a RAID 0 so it reads from either one of two disks. That can offer read speed close to 2x a single disk if the file is stored on both disks. I have 4 disk units and SHR1 and so don't have the 2 disk speed data handy. If he configured RAID 1, he would lose half his disk storage space (each disk has all data), but his read speeds would nearly double as he could read from either of two spinning disks.

damn! $300 is ridiculous high for that card!!! Synology should be included that port for the price of this NAS!!

Very informative. Exactly what I needed to know as I am thinking of setting up something like this, although somewhat more simple. Thanks!

Shouldn't the NVMe solid state drives be Synology brand? Are these required?
@cooldispatch7 ай бұрын
What if one of HDDs simply dies in the middle of your project? All is gone in a second. I would always sacrifice portion of capacity for the safety. That’s why having 4 bay unit makes more sense to me. Anyway great video 😊👍
@jeradtech7 ай бұрын
Certainly, but very unlikely to happen in the middle of a project. This NAS syncs to a much larger NAS continuously so if drives in the two bay failed I have a backup.

how much ram did you use for your upgrade
@josuese19842 ай бұрын
Thanks for the review! I will use your referral links to get the NAS and HDD.
@falconhead2862Ай бұрын
I just ordered one and then found your video. I really appreciate the upgrade parts list if I do order that RAM I'll be sure to use that link. I currently have a QNAP not a big fan anymore. I've heard good things about Synology hopefully this is a good starter into the ecosystem. Do you have a video on your other "backup" Synology?
@jeradtechАй бұрын
I have a few other Synology videos on this channel.

Hi! thanks for this overview! Does this device support HDD with SAS socket?

Is there a setting you need to enable to allow the "passthrough" method you used with the ethernet ports? I tried this and am not getting an internet connection on my pc when I use an ethernet connected to the LAN2 port on the NAS.
@jeradtech2 ай бұрын
Not that I’m aware of. I just connected and default settings worked.

How is the performance without the solid state drives? Could they be added later? Coukd I just install one?
@jeradtech6 ай бұрын
Yes. I will likely upgrade to solid-state drives to increase performance substantially.

I'm looking to get the same nas but seeing the RW speeds of 102 MB/s ... ? Is that the max that those Seagate drives can put ?
@jeradtech7 ай бұрын
It will be faster once I add the faster network card.

"I work from a 16 inch Macbook Pro; I have a M3 Max" is useless information that adds nothing to this video. Just flexing like a 5-year-old who just got a new red bike and must tell everyone about it. Lame.
