No NAS provider ever produced own memory. Qnap uses ADATA memory. They just say it in order to push you wasting ~500% more money compare to identical memory from ADATA, Kingston etc. Example : Qnap as they say costs on their pages for 4GB SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600MHz ~$108 while from any shop is $15-20 for identical memory. If they charge 10-15% more, I would say fair price, but this is just wrong

A couple of notes for anyone trying to do the memory test. Synology Assistant is a Desktop application (not a DSM app) - so you need to download it to your laptop. This app will show you the NASes on your network. Second, you need to change the settings for your NAS in Synology Assistant and check the "Memory Test" checkbox. This will give you a memory test button as shown in this video.

Kingston KF432S20IB/8 8GB DDR4-3200 Fury is working out-of-the-box. Cost about 22 EUR. Power off - put in - power on and enjoy!

8Gb of Crucial memory is no longer working. :(

I can confirm that. Can't pass memory test and makes random checksum errors during RSYNC backup on a DS716+II Running DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 4. Memory module Crucial CT102464BF160B 8GB memory. Replaced it with the original 2GB module and t works again, I have testet the 8GB module in a laptop with a bootable version of MemTest86 and it passed.

When we going to see one about DSM 7 ???

I have 8 gigs of Crucial memory in my DS720+ I have 4TB wolf NAS drive and 4TB Western Digital Red NAS drive.. so my system has all different parts it can get. It runs great I'll admit I think the longest I have had it running was only 6 days strait at one time. I am always changing and configuring and learning new things to do in DSM. I also have the DS118. Its is much slower when it comes to updates and anti virus scans. So I do have something to compare it to at home. It almost seems like fear tactic to buy only their memory made in a factory next to the other mid grade memory... I for one don't run Plex I could never get it to run on every device in my house properly, I have never seen my memory even go over 3.4GB of usage I ran everything I could think of. Final thoughts are if you just want to have a good server stick to the 4GB upgrade don't waste your money if you won't use a Virtual Server. I wasted my money in the end.

The benefit of having more RAM even when you don't use it actively is application cache. The more unused RAM you have the more memory it can use as cache w/o going to storage or resort to SWAP memory. While VM do benefit the most to have more memory, if you run apps, eg: surveillance, photo station, etc then you can benefit w/ having more RAM also. It just the you reach the point of no substancial benefits quicker.

Freeman Well good then I almost bought the cheaper memory that you were just using I wonder if using crucial memory is safer
@Crying-Freeman4 жыл бұрын
@@Loady420 I can't tell you what RAM to buy for DS720+ as I don't have that. You would have to google around for that. You can look at the Synology compatibilities list as starting point. I upgraded Synology brand 4GB non-ecc from factory on my DS1819+ to Crucial DDR4 ECC CT16G4TFD8266 and it did not complain about compatibility issue and memory test passed after about 4 hrs. Since DS1819+ only use 4GB non-ECC or 16GB ECC DDR4-2666 per official memory compatibility, be I used that as starting point. DS720+ is newer so there might nit be much info on this. If your came w/ 4GB soldered then you have to get something w/ similar spec as the one soldered since you can't easily swap that out. Meaning 4GB module + onboard 4GB may be your safest bet. It come down to how much memory can your NAS take advantage off. If DS720+ have non-ECC RAM soldered, then your other stick need to match that and the speed.

Can you tell us what Crucial Part number you used? Results seem to be mixed with some success and some failure following NASCompares info.
@Crying-Freeman4 жыл бұрын
@@jonalice1 The part number was in the previous post, from the look of it DS720+ that you own has its own memory soldered to the mainboard and it's non-ECC and cannot be remove or replace. The part I gave is an ECC stick which isn't for your model. I find that older models 2018-2019 is much better in term of memory upgrade. Synology DiskStation in the 2015-2017 I would avoid due to CPU problem. All the 2020 and newer models appear to be harder and harder to get it to work w/ 3rd party memory. If you have no need for the newer model, I would go back and get older one. Not to mention cheaper as well especially if you looking at used and/or refurb from reputable retailers.

I just tried the same 16GB module in my DS720+ and it just gives me a blinking blue light. I guess it doesn't work for everyone :(

Can a Nas be used as a Das until i sorted out my s##t?
@Crying-Freeman4 жыл бұрын
I find the subject of the video quite misleading. Since there is no actual memory test at all. There are memory installation, system recognized the memory installed, VM allocation of the memory, but there is NO actual "memory test". Why keep pointing out to run the memory test, but you don't do it at all? Also, it's quite weird you keep mentioning about the graphic doesn't look right, both on this and previous video. I means don't those graph and the interface are rendered on your computer locally, the NAS only send you the data and maybe pictures, but the actual graph and other things are render locally right. Are you sure those are because glitchy graphics cause by the unofficial memory and not something else? PS: I go to the Synology DSM demo website, and I have exactly the same glitchy graph in the resource monitor. Why don't you tell me what that suppose to means. demo.synology.com/en-us/dsm

You spent how long writing this out because you wanted to try and be smart . .. how about you do the proper test on your channel? Put a link to your channel and I’ll have a look ..
