Some years ago my first home NAS was a QNAP 5 drive. A few years out it developed an intermittent hardware problem that appeared to be 2 drives failing but after replacing the drives turned out to be the box. So then I had 7 good drives and a box that only had 3 reliable slots with 3 drives worth of data running in degraded mode. Luckily I was using Raid6 or it would have been a disaster (or at least a lot of work, there is a backup server). I got a Synology 8 slot so I could move over and use all the drives and am on my third Synology now, no hardware failures other than drives, and about 5x more box-years on Synology vs QNAP. Whatever architecture the QNAP was using, it was not as reliable or fault tolerant as the Synology. Clearly small statistics but the Synology software and hardware have been better in my experience. I'd like to see 2.5 Gigabit but realistically 4x 1 Gigabit is not often a real bottleneck. I'll take reliability over most features, where is the data?

I am a QNAP user for many years and I agree with you, they have to take security more seriously. But I personal would never expose my NAS to the internet, that's a no-go for me - for those things I got a root server. I guess the best solution for most users, if they really need it, would be to use their router with a build in VPN/Wireguard server (like e.g. Fritzbox AVM). I have always thought about buying an Synology NAS, because I like their software. Since Synology is limiting its hardware more and more, the topic is done for me, I do not tolerate such a customer unfriendly behaviour of a manufacturer. I am currently seriously thinking about an open and flexible solution based on TrueNAS.

@Zwiesel66Ай бұрын
@@svrkprabhakar What I mean is that your NAS should only be accessible from inside your LAN. Many people at home configure their router to make the NAS accessible from the Internet (dynDNS, port forwarding, or even automatic UPnP), which in my humble opinion is a huge security risk. If there is an important reason why you need to access your NAS (or LAN) via the internet, I would set up a VPN.

Went with QNAP, couldn't be happier. The speed and features of the 453E/464 are really sweet. For Plex alone the 453E, barely breaks a sweat with demanding 4k. Also the QTier feature has been a great way for me to add capacity to the pool and the OS manages it perfectly. Upgraded network to 2.5gbe. HD Station is great for surveillance. QTS is fine, it isn't that hard to setup. Deployment of the NAS disables the admin and does other things. The value perspective of what you pay for and what you get esp, with the 453E is tough to beat. Sadly Synology has become a total joke to me, the price to get it close to where a a decked out 464 is nose bleed expensive for what you get. If you want more options install the QNAP Club for a ton of additional software options.

For a business the support is invaluable. Also rather be future proof. Side note: My Nas is setup mostly as a local Nas with only 1 vpn so I make sure my security is tight.

The DSx23+ units are a total no-go for us. Also, thanks for your excellent informative videos!

Thats an awesome setup for that! Can you confirm that the iGPU's are actually used by surveillance station? when I had looked at this in the past it did not seem like iGPU enabled NAS units had any better performance then their counterpart. AFAIK Surveillance station does not have to encode or decode the footage as its just storing it. The camera encodes it, while your computer actually decodes it

@@SpaceRexWill By the way, I verified that the installation of Surveillance Station, also causes Advanced Media Extensions (HEVC codec) to be installed for the viewing of H.264 files (our surveillance camera output). Therefore, I strongly suspect that this implies that the NAS is decoding the files. I think this is further corroborated by the fact that we stream smoothly to our phones via Synology's DS Cam phone app, as a phone's processing power is quite weak relative to a desktop/laptop system.
@SpaceRexWill Жыл бұрын
So as far as I know the AME is only required to actually transmit h265 (HEVC) video as h265 has a pretty expensive license cost. As for the phones they have built in GPU's and pretty much any phone can decode a 4k video so it is not GPU intensive at all (as long as you have a GPU) If you look at the number of FPS the 723+ can do its the same as the 720+ which has the intel quick sync iGPU in it. I know the actual NVR units use the GPUs for AI processing. I may reach out to synology to find out

I have both a Synology DS-920+ and an older QNAP TS-453A so I have the best / worst of both worlds. Having lived with both of them as a pair for a couple of years now, I wouldn't have it any other way. The QNAP is mostly a backup for the Synology but I can still use whichever one is stronger and better suited for a particular task. As for internet access, I don't trust either NAS's native connection software. I use Tailscale which is dead simple to install and setup. But, if you do install Tailscale, you will need an app for moving files to or from your NAS and the free app WinSCP works extremely well - it's much like having 2 instances of Windows File Explorer side by side - one local and the other showing the remote device. I do plan to replace my QNAP with a TVS-h874, AKA "The Beast" to future proof that half of my pair. Synology doesn't have anything comparable unfortunately. I would never buy 4 bay again. Having had to expand my storage on both NAS recently, I ended up putting perfectly good HDD's on the shelf because I didn't have the extra bays. And with Synology's ability to mix different sized drives, that loss was especially notable. Pay a bit more up from for 6 or 8 bays and it will be cheaper in the long run.

IMHO you're exaggerating QNAP's security issues - even your example is NOT from QTS, and it was fixed in 2020. You're saying that every single QNAP had this vulnerability, but this is simply *false* - and it's particularly false for this TS-464, which is both running QTS (not QES!) and it's too new to be affected. If you dig hard enough, I'm sure you can find irrelevant examples for Synology, too. The TS-464 runs QTS 5.0.1 (QTS 5.1.0 is currently in Release Candidate status), FTR. And in these last years, QNAP kept pushing security fixes. Sure, you shouldn't ever expose your QNAP NAS directly to the internet; but is it safe to do it with Synology? I don't think so. To a lesser extent, Synology was also affected by ransomware; and Synolocker relied on software vulnerabilities (not on default admin:admin passwords). I had good expectations from this video - I'm here after watching the WDDA stuff - but I'm afraid I have to downvote what is essentially an attempt to push people towards your preferred brand.

I currently have an older QNAP TS-221 QTS v4.3.3 latest OS with a Marvel 2.0GHz CPU that only supports DLNA to stream to my Samsung QN90A TV. My biggest problem is I needed to create a new multimedia library as my QN90A Samsung TV recently just could not find sub folders in the main multimedia folder of videos. Now after a complete Medi Library re-build the TV is quicker by 50% and at least sees them...still damn slow taking 35 sec to bring up the sub folders but at least they are coming up. However the time for the NAS to re-generate a fresh thumbnails of some 72,000 files it is so so very slow, only decrementing # files by 1 file per 6 seconds. This is going to take around 5 days...a ridiculous wait time. Is the TS-464 also very slow at creating this quantity of thumbnails ? Is this a general QNAP issue on all their NAS servers inc the TS-464 or in fact all NAS servers of any brand in your experience? My 6TB HDD in the TS-221 QNAP is a WD60EFAX.

New to NSA here. I'll keep it simple...and I think my needs are simple too. I'm a 65-year-old guy just getting into having a NAS for two main reasons...1) Use it as a Plex server and 2) use it for file storage, photo archive. I don't download and store shows or movies, and doubt that I will, nor is there any gaming of any kind. I'm not as technically savvy as many out here, so that's a checkmark in favor of Synology. BUT, I hate the idea of paying MORE for LESS hardware horsepower, technology and upgrade capability, since this will almost certainly be a "once in a lifetime purchase" (no future NAS's), so that's a checkmark in favor of the QNAP. Given all I've said, what does the group feel might be a better option? Your comments about security breaches with the QNAP scare me but I'm not entirely clear what you mean by "using apps connected to the internet" means in real life? Example?

Not saying that it's not possible but it definitely requires much more networking experience or and research to properly lockdown a Qnap. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like Synology is going in a favorable direction considering their lineup last year. Thankfully after getting hit multiple times by hackers(or their bots) I finally decided to up my game and use a Vilfo VPN router(not advertisement lolz) it has a built-in VPN server that lets you connect the router with local access from anywhere without having to open the WAN completely. Synology is a fine solution (although a bit pricey, esp with add ons), but the software side is a give and take and not a clear victory. They have been taking steps to make security better along the way, but QNAP still need to continue chopping away to show seriousness with it. I am currently running my second Synology NAS and I am a huge AMD fan so the 723+ seemed to be the logical choice for me. However I was rather put off when I found out I can't use any M.2 drive that I wanted. Especially since I can use any HDD, and SSD and any RAM I do choose. Also having to buy a 10gb upgrade... Well I am in search of a NAS that is better without going DIY. So far Synology is winning but not by much.

@SpaceRex why does the thumbnail for this video have BTRFS with a green tick for QNAP? And why does the Synology have a red cross for PCIe Slot?
@SpaceRexWill Жыл бұрын
both Synology and this QNAP have BTRFS Then Synology does have an expansion port, but its not a standard PCIe half / full hight card, its a proprietary system

Which Synology would you recommend if I want to store large amounts of photos and video (I'm a photographer/videographer) and also use Plex for watching all my movies at 4K/1080 and also store all my music?

920+
@ThWind81 Жыл бұрын
If you want to edit 4k video directly from the NAS, you might look at something with better than 1GbE connections. I have decided to get the 923+ for storing my movie collection and raw video to be edited. The 923+ can be upgraded to 10GbE. I will just run Plex server on a different device with an Intel processor with Quick Sync.

@SpaceRex Is there any company offering a great hardware AND a great software? It feels so extremly painful, having to chose from either using the totally unacceptable 1GBit Ethernet and other hardware drawbacks from Synology - including the unacceptable hazzle of not being able to use Samsung NVME 990 PRO SSDs out of the box (proprietary, expensive strategy of Synology...) or having to choose an insecure system with bad software but perfect hardware. This is so painful. It hurts so much. I want that DSM Synology Software running on a QNAP Hardware... is there no manufacturer offering good hard- and software, without having to pay something like 5000 USD for some PRO system... ? 😞

QNAP by a mile. QTS will only improve even further. Meanwhile, I enjoy far better hardware to begin with plus the ability to make it last longer with massive list of potential upgrades. DSM is great but it's totally gimped by the hardware choices made by Synology and the anti-consumer nature of their proprietary upgrades. No one with two brain cells to rub together would open anything that is not completely necessary directly to the internet so that "issue" is a complete non-starter. Not defending QNAP's response, it was horrible and damaged their reputation greatly.

Depends on how fast you want it done. Generally, I'd wonder why you'd want to rip bds on a NAS though

I really like Synology DSM, but they're seriously lacking on the hardware side. Also, Synology's drive and RAM compatibility is not very good. The QNAP's are compatible with Seagate 24TB drives, where Synology have no drives over 18 TB, barely reaching over 16TB. Even their own branded harddrives don't go over 18TB. After 11 years of Synology, I'm going QNAP.

I have my Mac Mini M2 Pro on 24/7 and is currently my Plex server with a 8TB external USB HDD attached (Seagate Ironwolf 8TB NAS HDD I bought for $209 a couple years ago.) Mac is great for transcoding. What do you think about continuing to use my mac mini as the server but acquire the DS923+ (or DS1522+) just for storage. Does plex work well that way? i.e. storing movies and tv shows (DVR recorded even) to NAS? The DVR has been reliable locally on external USB. (I think it records first to the internal ssd and then transfers the file after recording.)

Always wonder can QNAP nas become a WiFi router after adding a WiFi pcie card ?
@SmallSpoonBrigade Жыл бұрын
Honestly, why bother? Unless you've got limited space, you're usually better off splitting the functions between different devices and getting the one that's the best for each. That way when they break, and they will, you're not stuck replacing all of them at once. Plus, they tend to do better at the individual tasks. I wouldn't personaly want my storage solution doing much beyond storage and streaming related tasks.

I am QNAP user for years and years and having DSM as a negative point on the Thumbnail hurts. I have tried DSM and QTS is way better imo. But I guess that's just me using QNAP for years and only spent like 30 Minutes with DSM. And no matter what OS you use opening a NAS to the Internet is always a stupid Idea, for that you always should use dedicated hardware with an clean OS and none do it al software.

I had 3 synology units fail within a few months of ownership and it was a nightmare trying to recover the data from them. I don't care if the synology is gold plated with a threadripper pro processor and a 8 port 10gb switch, it is not worth the risk of waking up to a beeping machine and a 3 week data recovery nightmare.

I watched this video hoping to find the answers I was looking for and came away realizing I just need to do a lot of thinking. How important is transcoding to me? If I do open things up to the internet, would it be more than just the media? I’ve got some things to consider that frankly I hadn’t really thought about yet. Armed with this information though, I should be able to come up a nice informed decision, so thank you for the video!

Security is too big an issue to ignore. QNAP track record here is about as bad as it can be. Having security issues is a given which means the only way to judge a company is how they react to security issues. For QNAP to not even respond to advisories is utter and total failure. Also one thing not mentioned in the video is one of the main reasons I upgraded my 918+ to a 923+ ... ECC RAM. I'm primarily a business user, so transcoding is not a big deal for me. ECC RAM in a server is defacto and a MAJOR win for the Synology hardware in this comparison imho.
@alexsarbu3978 Жыл бұрын
The Celeron processor doesn't support ECC RAM - so it's not QNAP's fault (and for the intended market, that Celeron with its hardware transcoding should be a better choice than ECC). The cheapest QNAP supporting ECC RAM is the TS-x73a series, which is also using a Ryzen processor. And supports ZFS.

Have a DS1513+, love synology, but need to upgrade now, want to stay with Synology, BUT, why the heck have you dumped intel with no graphics support in your new models. 😢😢. I need a 8 bay with graphics for plex... why the heck don't you offer a system with graphics card support. So silly synology.... you are losing customers!!! Im a home user, i need BOTH DATA and PLEX.. which I'm sure is most users needs.

I hope you can help me! I have sooo many files on my pc and external SSDs lying around on my desk. About 6 TB with videos, pictures and documents. Now that I've started a KZbin channel, there is going to be alot of video files! All I want is a box with 4 bays (maybe go with two 12TB to start with), to store aaall of my files. I want to connect with a USB to my pc and have a decent speed when tranferring files from my computer and I want it all to be mirrored. The networking part is not so important to me. Is this Synology DS923+ for me? And what do I look for in a suitable harddrive? Thank so much and cheers from Norway!

I read many of these posts , and made me feel really ignorant, I don't really understand much of wart is being recommended, if some one is kind enough to help me with my needs, I am a photographer that has outgrown more than 4TB of on my external drive, and all that I want, is too have a more reliable and redundant (RAID 0 or 1) system that I can transfer photos and videos without too much lag and is secure, easy to install and use, good software to manage photos and ability to sync with a MACOS based computer ....... I do not have any need to expose my apps or data to the internet ....what would you recommend?....I also seen now SSD Me.2 based units .......any thoughts on those ?

The biggest problem of QNAP for me is it's raid solution. If I have 4 4TB HDD now, when I want to expand storage, I have to replace all disk. While using SHR in Synology, I only replace two of them.

Synology is going DOWN HILL, laggin behind competition. I see Synology being too comfortable in it's market position and trying to milk consumers as much as possible with outdated hardware. Definitely going to buy QNAP.
