Great review Tom! we use the FS6400. Its been in service for 3 years. 30 Video/Photo editors using it through SMB. All Enterprise Samsung 7.68TB SSDs in RAID F1. We havent had a single hiccup in 3 years of daily use. It's a BEAST. ALL backups are done to it as well. Using a RS2818RP+ for backups.

What are the drives do you use ?

i do like the Synology RS/FS To. I have a few customers, with only low load on those RS (1221+) they are attaced as NFS to a single/dual node ESX installation. the active backup suite is doin a good job. we use hyper backup then to mount S3/Storageblobs to get backup out of customer site. together with the hyper explorer and the storage appliance for vmware you get pretty much value out of those devices for small/medium business

Found an Aussie distributor that sells the drives - 960GB 2.5" 1.3DWPD for $490, the Intel equivalent S4520 960GB (2 DWPD) goes for $260. So not quite HP/Dell levels of markup but over 24 bays it adds up.

We got a FS6400 because FS3600 EoS last year. Issue with those new models that require Synology drives is they have no 8TB drives. Many of those old models combos like FS6400 come with Micron 8TB drives. Let's talk about Synology drive requirements. I am not fully against it. It's common in enterprises. However, those models should also offer enterprise level of support options, like 1hr or less support response, active hardware monitor, advanced replacement etc.
@fthorsen Жыл бұрын
As this NAS isn't an enterprise product, it shouldn't have these SSD requirements.

Awesome review of an awesome unit Tom!

I think some of the smaller units that have the dual NVMe slots do have some limitations when you use consumer versus Synology NVMe drives certain functions aren't always available I believe. Is there a test suite in Phoenix. To test like virtual machine instances and how many it can sustain? Or at least benchmark the performance of a certain number of VMs on a storage subsystem?

Yeah. I love the Synology OS. But I just couldn't bring myself to spend $16k on a SynologyFS series server that is loaded with SATA drives when I could get a supermicro system with all nvme gen 4 storage for cheaper. Do I need 400gbps read/write speeds? No. But if I'm spending $20k it's insulting to get 15gbps. The Synology Drive, Hyperbackup and Active Backup for Business though are superb and an incredible value. It's just a shame you can't license their OS for real hardware.
@UltralifeTech Жыл бұрын
I’m a little surprised this uses SATA SSDs as opposed to U.2 NVMe drives. Now that U.2 is entering the used market, id like an affordable way to mess around with it.
@fthorsen Жыл бұрын
As this NAS is targeted for SMB, then maybe it's ok? Should have Nvme or a few/half U.2 slots maybe. But then they shouldn't have the hard SSD requirements - that's for Enterprise.
@berndeckenfels Жыл бұрын
I would agree that they don’t support non-certified drives. But not accepting them makes it electronic trash quite quickly. Locks out the used gear market and also companies cannot decommission them to e.g. cold storage with new super-large aftermarket SSDs.
@berndeckenfels Жыл бұрын
Hm, for those specs it sounds pretty expensive.. why is that? D-Xeon, small RAM, SATA… Btw you did not mention drive formfactor or connectors (2.5 sata). I thought it’s NVMe U.2 for that price. I guess that’s the SW price?

Does the FS2500 require Synology SSDs or can I use WD, Samsung, Seagate? The Synology drives are twice the price from what I see? Any reccomendations for the FS2500? Is putting SSDs in the RS2423+ less restrictive/better buy?
@locusm Жыл бұрын
I have been looking at these in Australia, the distributors that stock them dont actually sell the drives they require which is plain weird. A FS3410 is around $10500 AUD ex-gst for the chassis, so you end up comparing with a 2RU server with 24 U.3 bays that would include a much better CPU and out perform these by a substantial amount. I happen to like Synology software a lot but their hardware is just overpriced & underpowered in almost all segments.
@shanent5793 Жыл бұрын
That's terrible if the performance scales inversely with the number of connections. Throughput usually increases with a more parallel load. What are you getting in return for the performance loss?
@dsofe4879 Жыл бұрын
1:55 are you kidding me? That list ONLY includes Synology's ridiculous overpriced SSDs! That just entirely killed Synology for me. As much as I like DSM, it's going to be a cold day in hell before I pay 2x U.2 -money for their crappy rebranded SATA SSDs that don't go over 4TB. Ridiculous.

Does the FS series have the same virtual machine manager limitation as the DS1621+ of 2 free VMs before you need a subscription?
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Жыл бұрын
This applies to more than just the FS3410, there is not a subscription but a licence for some advances features, but not per VM. www.synology.com/en-us/products/VMMPro_License_Pack

Is there a limit on the number of machines you can backup with the Active backup? We're at the limit with the free Veeam software. We do use a synology; but i haven't tried this for the VMs yet.
@rowebil00 Жыл бұрын
Veeam NFR License will help you.
@LAWRENCESYSTEMS Жыл бұрын
It's really limited by the hardware in terms of how many systems can be backup up sententiously and the amount of storage available.

We have been using Synology FS3400 for 3 years now, but I am unfortunately very disappointed. I have it running in a high availability cluster, but there is no way to upgrade it without a long downtime. Therefore, it is not suitable for real-world production use.

I had problem about my synology nas And Steve Baker Technical Support Engineer write me about my problem that We are sorry to hear that your DS218 has to be reset. This is likely caused by an issue in the DSM operating-system. We understand that you are worried about losing your data. Please rest assured, your data should not be affected by the reset as the OS and data are stored in separate partitions on the drives. When re-installing the OS, the system should normally not touch the data-partitions of your drives. I beleived and i did what he said now all my data erased omg i shocked after sir Steve Baker dissepeared i am alone there is nothing in my hands Synology is regret bad nas choose qnap there isnt good support for problemss !!! Synology is big regret

I don’t understand why everything that’s rackmountable has to be way more money and noisy.
@klipk72966 күн бұрын
Rack mount gear is not typically aimed at consumers. Having said that, I've seen plenty of videos of people replacing their server fans with silent noctua fans or other alternatives with seemingly no cooling issues
@bb555555555 күн бұрын
@klipk7296 I know. I may have to do that one day. But in any event these companies need to get used to the idea of rack mount gear for the consumers because new homes are being built with wired internet in mind and all that wiring has to go somewhere.
