I can relate what you described. I went off from Google to my NAS using Drive, Photos + Synology office. This basically replaced any dependency of google cloud services. Using VPN gives me access anywere from the world to it. For me at least the NAS already payed for it vs paying google for storage. P.S. in Synology drive client you can sync individual folders. This is awesome in case you run it across multiple machines and don't need every folder to sync in you Home folder. P.P.S using the backup feature is great, I use it to Sync specific folder from my PC that serves as Home folder for my work. Why you may ask? That's because before I had the NAS this folder structure existed but I wanted to have it backed in case my work laptop dies. The only negative is that you can have only 1 backup task. I believe that's because Synology intended this feature as backup for a whole Folder structure of your machine.

You're use case scenario sounds exactly like mine so I want to thank you for this video and detailed instructions. The only major difference is I'm learning and running Linux, Linux Mint to be precise. So far the biggest issue Is establishing a seemless connection to Synology folders from the desktop. Linux wants to mount Synology folders as drives using Samba and there's always a delay. Sometimes it will timeout and freeze if I'm not continually accessing them. Not sure if this is a Linux issue or Samba, I'm still learning. But you've given me some new ideas to try now and I'm feeling encouraged. Thanks again for the info and instructions. Thank you for creating such an illustrious and detailed video clip with explanation. Truly appreciate your work. Your inspiration for a personal cloud makes me curious to migrate from Google Drive and Onedrive. I do have doubts in mind that I would like to ask for your kind answers. Since I'm totally new to NAS and Synology comes up top in my Google search. Your video has been very helpful. Please allow me to ask a dumb question. I now have USB external hard drive (Western Digital Passport 4TB and Seagate Backup Plus Silm 1TB) with me and would like to put it to good use to save some money, of course. So I'm curious to buy Synology ds120j (1 bay with 2 usb ports) and use two of my external hard drives without any internal hdd. I'm wondering if this will work or does it need any tweaks to spice it up. I really love Synology Drive and the way it works, especially when you describe it as an app you cannot live without. Hey man, absolutely loving your clear and direct info on the Synology system. I am trying to understand the difference between Synology Drive and Tailscale. From your videos and how you speak so highly of both, I have now downloaded them both. But specifically for remote access to the NAS, which is better? Well explained, loved your vid! I am too sure the warning message you have got when you enabled the Team Folder, which says that "please do not mount remote folder or virtual drive in team folder which already been enabled". Does this mean if you already have a network mapped folder through SMB, then we shouldn't enable the same folder as Team Folder for sharing files though the Synology Drive Client? I have shared folder remotely located in office that is mapped to all local PCs locally in the office, but I also use VPN to access those files from home remotely through SMB map drives, it is not as crispy as working locally in the office, so I am thinking if Synology drive would be faster since all files are synced to my local PC then synced back to office file server. I am not too sure if this brings conflicts using SMB and Synology Drive at the same time. Thanks!
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm not sure exactly what warning message you're speaking of, but I've only used Team Folders that were created on the NAS. SMB mapped drives are edited directly off the NAS, so Synology Drive functions differently, where the physical files are synced back and forth to the device.

Nice video. I've recently started moving over to Synology drive from SMB shares. What are your thoughts on the "homes" folder usage vs. separate SMB "shared folders" which are permission locked to one user. Synology Drive does have the 'selective sync' which, unlike SMB, can allow you to keep a local copy of certain files. SMB permissions on a shared drive are probably the easiest to manage. Note: I use some shared drives as actual shared drives with multiple users accessing them (e.g. family photos), whereas other drives are specific only to a user.
@WunderTechTutorials

If you don't need different snapshot/backup/retention settings, the home folders would be my preference. When you get into needing different settings for each, separate folders as team folders would probably be best.

I currently have two shared folders for Media and Personal. But after watching this, it seems like it would make more sense to move those folders into the newly created home folder instead? My thinking is that it would just look cleaner to have one Sync task from Synology Drive to show 'My Drive' instead of having two tasks (ie Locations in MacOS Finder) for each shared folder. Is there a disadvantage to this setup I'm not seeing? If this setup does make sense, would there be any reason to consider moving all my other root folders into the home folder as well (ie docker, PlexMediaServer, Time Machine backups, etc.) or should these remain untouched? I am also the only user on my NAS if that context helps.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials 9 ай бұрын
The benefit of keeping separate shared folders is if you want different snapshot/backup/retention policies. Another is permissions but if you're the only one, that's not valid. I wouldn't say there is a right or wrong way to do it, but if you want to separate those things out and have different schedules or policies, then keeping them separate makes sense. If you want it all to be the same, you can- it's really up to you.

Hey Brother, I'm somewhat of a newb so wanted to that you for the incredible information that you share here, I refer to your “Goldmine” channel almost daily. I’m in somewhat of a pinch at the current moment and hoping you could help me with a question that I haven't been able to find a clear answer to? I will say that I wish that I had run across this video before setting up the SynD client because I now have (2) different SynD folders in my (C) drive, and another SynD folder that shows up under Quick Access, including a couple more folders which are desktop shortcuts. Over time files have been dragged over into these (C) drive folders or desktop shortcuts and it would appear that most files have been synced to the NAS. However, being a newb and having over 10TB of data I can’t honestly be for certain. My question is, now that I know that I totally jacked the SynD setup, I was wondering if I were to totally delete Synology Drive from my PC and start over with the setup, would I lose all the data that currently is located and/or appears in the (C) drive folders or desktop SynD shortcut folders? My thought is that all the data has been synced to the NAS so I'm all good, however, over time, months, I have received several errors when transferring data either when dragging over to the NAS or during the sync process that says the file name is too long and I had to select skip. I'd love to know how to alter the setting that is restricting file name length on both the NAS & windows PC because it's incredibly frustrating. I was hoping that we could possibly schedule a brief call to talk shop, but if not any advice and/or direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! You shouldn't lose the data, but I would move it off, personally. Either directly to the NAS in a temp folder (if you have enough space), or on a separate folder on the C: drive (once again, if you have enough space). From there, you can delete the task(s), create a new one, and slowly start to move the data over. Obviously, this might mean that you'll have duplicate data on the NAS, but I'd rather have duplicate data that has to be deleted than accidentally delete the data. In terms of the filename, it could be the filename itself being too long or the actual path being too long. Both happen and shortening the name and seeing if that works (or moving it to a separate, higher-up folder) are the two best steps forward. I do offer consulting sessions if you're interested, but this sounds like something that you might want to tackle on your own. Either way, here is the link if you're interested: www.wundertech.net/wundertech-consulting/

Frank, I don't do a lot of remote work but Synology Drive really intrigues me. Occasionally, when I need a file when I'm away from home, I use Tailscale VPN to login in either with my browser or Windows file explorer. Once I make that connection, will the Synology Drive on my remote laptop automatically sync with my Synology NAS back home or is there something else that needs to be done ?
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials Жыл бұрын
Short answer, yes. When you connect to the Synology Drive Client, you'll have to enter in an IP address, hostname, or QuickConnect ID. If you want to use it with Tailscale, enter the local IP, then set up the sync task. When you're local, the files will automatically sync back and forth, but when remote, as soon as you connect to Tailscale, they will start to sync as well. I have my laptop syncing this way through a WireGuard VPN and it just...works, and works very well at that.

A couple of questions: 1. Why would you want to use On Demand sync when a mapped network folder gives you exactly the same thing but faster and without using extra resources in the form of Syn. Drive client and Server? 2. To my, possibly naïve, mind, it makes much more sense to use this software to allow you to access a local file stored on a fast SSD much more quickly than having a copy on a slower NAS filled with slower HDDs, which is what most NAS boxes typically have. Synchronisation between local drive and NAS can then happen in the background. Does this not make sense? 3. Doesn't it make sense having any shared folders mapped directly to a separate drive on my PC(s) rather than being forced to embed them in a folder called SynologyDrive on that drive? After all, the software is perfectly well able to do without an extra layer of folders on the shared folders on the NAS, so why does it need that folder on you local drive(s)? again, IMHO, the user interface is clunky and unforgiving of mistakes, so after a whole day of messing around with it last week, I gave up and binned it and cannot understand why so many people on KZbin sing its praises, as I think it's a great idea very poorly thought out and implemented.
@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials Жыл бұрын
1. A mapped network drive uses the network for reading/writing. If you're editing a document, you're not going to notice it, but if you're editing a 10GB video file, without an enhanced network (2.5Gb at minimum, preferably 10Gb), it'll be painful. Honestly, even with a 10Gb network like that, it'll probably be slower from an editing perspective than the local drive (assuming you're using a device with an NVMe drive). 2. Short answer, yes, that's the idea. If you want to set it up this way, your only real decision depends on the On-demand Sync option. 3. I go over this in the video - you need to uncheck the option for the SynologyDrive folder and it'll use the top level folder and you won't have to embed it. I think a lot of people sing it praises because you need to compare it to other tools like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive as opposed to a mapped network drive (which has its place). The setup process can be confusing, I agree with that, but once you get passed that, you're looking at a fully local, private cloud that can handle all of your syncing, versioning, and backup needs. For things like video editing or really anything that involves large files, on-demand sync is a game changer. Using video editing as an example, there's no real reason (IMO) to edit video files over the network, it will only slow down your process. Having the ability to selectively sync what you're working on, then freeing up the space when you're done is an amazing option. It's not for everyone, but if you get passed the setup process, I think you'd be very happy with it. I'm really not lying when I say it's my favorite application, but I get it - it's not for everyone.

@@WunderTechTutorials Thank you for your very rapid reply. I read with interest your comment about un-ticking the 'Create new SynologyDrive folder' but that doesn't work if you're trying to sync, in my case, a shared folder to a physical local drive. It refuses to allow you to do it, telling the user 'You don't have permission to write to this drive' or some such nonsense. I find this statement ridiculous as it's my drive and of course I have permissions to write to it! This is the gripe I have with Syn. Drive. It's a great idea but badly thought out and implemented. My thinking is this: I have four PCs which I use, only two of which have a fast-access storage. For the past 120 years or more, I've been using a NAS as a centralised storage from which I can access my data from anywhere. I recently bought a new PC in which I've installed a very fast SSD for my programs and a large capacity MVMe M.2 drive on which I'd hoped to have a copy of my data in separate partitions reflecting the drive mappings on my other PCs but, being local, would afford me much faster access to that data. The only way I can do it is to have an extra level of folder inside the local drives, thus making the directory structure different from the other three PCs/laptops and I cannot, for the life of me see why that's necessary. I'm now looking at Resilio Sync, also available on the NAS boxes to see if I can achieve what I'm looking for but cannot find any up-to-date information on it to see if it'll do what I'd like. It seems like I'm going to have to spend countless hours of trial and error to see if that works 😞. However, your helpfulness has earned you another sub 🙂 - thanks.

One thing to consider carefully before committed to fully move from Google Drive to Synology Drive is those suite of Google web apps and their tight integration with Google Drive. For example, you could create Google My Maps files from your Google Drive and be able to open your maps directly from it. Aso those suite of office apps like Google Doc, Google Sheet, etc. that may have a different level of features support comparing to Synology Office app.

There are a bunch of other things (sharing as well), but when you're editing files like that, you're editing them directly off the NAS, through the network. Slower performance for big files as well.

@WunderTechTutorials
@WunderTechTutorials Жыл бұрын
The main benefit is that you're editing the file locally rather than through the network (which is what you're doing with SMB). For small files (Word docs, etc), you're not really going to notice a difference. As the file sizes grow, the performance will suffer. There are other benefits as well (versions, sharing, etc), but performance and versions are probably the biggest. Versions have actually saved me a few times.

COMPLEX Question: I wanna mirror all of my Desktop PC files (4TB with music, pictures), and at a certain point 👉 I will switch to a Laptop with mostly projects/work files which I will want to mirror as well to my NAS, yet, it will be Asymmetrical since I won't carry all of that 4TB data of music/pictures with me on that laptop. So I don't want Synology to erase those 4TB from my desktop PC, since it won't "see them" on my Laptop. How can Synology Drive /or/ "Active Backup for Business" Apps- help me pull it off? Is it possible to have data that isn't mirrored and data that is mirrored at the same folder even?

Hey man. I really want Synology Drive to work but it seems to be buggy for my on Mac OS. I’ve been trying to “pin local copy permanently” but after a few files download the remainder stop. I have to highlight all the remaining files that didn’t download, unpin and then repin to start the process again for there only to be a few that download. I have to keep doing this until everything has downloaded. It’s to the point where it’s so bad that I don’t see it as an efficient way to work. I have found some articles online/Reddit suggesting SD is not perfect on Mac but wondered if you have experienced this and could suggest some tips for me to try? Thank you

I think there are three good applications for such a syncing-approach: 1. Large files that require random access (e.g., video files) and from multiple devices. For those it is good to have them locally, as well as on a shared location. 2. Sharing files with users outside your network. For the latter Google Drive (or similar) is much better. 3. Being able to work on files while being completely offline. For anything else, I find it easier and less storage redundant to use Samba shares. Perhaps there is a fourth reason for a syncing-approach which is to cover devices that cannot handle Samba shares (like phones). I like Google Drive, as it supports collaboration with users outside my network and allows me to work on the files while I'm offline. As I don't have any need for "1." above and "2." is not supported by NAS-based syncing, and I don't need to non-local copies of files that I'm not sharing with users on other networks, I don't think Synology Drive makes any sense for me. Am I missing something? FWIW, your videos are really good, but to round this one off, I think it needed a section as to when a Samba share is just sufficient or even the better solution.

Thanks for the response! I can only speak for myself, but from the day I started using Synology Drive, I haven't accessed a file through SMB unless the data is destined to live there with almost no interaction (media files, etc). In cases like that, I'll access it through SMB and transfer the data to/from, etc, but for anything I am actively working on, it's all done through Synology Drive. Even for basic Word documents that can be easily edited through the network. I can't give you a specific reason as to why I only use Synology Drive for these files, but I think it can only be summarized by the whole application itself. Versions aren't something you think about until you actually need them, accessing your data on mobile phones or web browsers with the app is actually useful, and you'll never complain about editing or viewing a file locally, but you might over your network. The setup process to me isn't that cumbersome once you understand it, and on-demand sync works incredibly well. I don't share files with it, or work with a team, but I use it in some capacity almost every single day. With that said, I do agree that strictly sharing files is better using Google Drive or another cloud tool. I'm not trying to convince you to use it and I think everyone should make the decision for themselves, but I genuinely mean it when I say that it's my favorite tool.

@@WunderTechTutorials Thanks a lot for the in-depth reply. I can see that if one wants the syncing approach for one reason (and hence sets up everything, including having clients run in the background) then it is very convenient to do almost everything in this manner. You can repeat the same actions for every folder you want to sync. As far as I can see things aren't quite so idiot-proof on the Synology. First you must select a folder on the NAS and give it permissions before you can do anything else. I understand this and I tried it and it worked. But I have other folders I need to sync and when I try I get told I can't do it because this folder is already being used to sync. Ultimately, yes, you must sync folders on your NAS (whether they're team folders or regular folders) to a different folder on your PC.
