I am getting into the whole Kubernetes and Docker scene on my FreeNas. It runs of course on a much more powerful machine with a lot more memory. But this is really taking me all the way back to the first virtualization beginning of 2000 era. I like to tinker and snapshots give me that opportunity. Not good? Roll it back!

The DS 119j (well in my case the DS 115j) can do the drive/office stuff. Maybe for not a lot of people for a husband and wife (like my household) its good enough.

Excellent info, Lon. Thanks! Do you think that the hardware on the DS1019+ is a little under-powered? Specifically the CPU.
@Infesteringmole5 жыл бұрын
Don't look at the CPU power...it's not how it works in terms of a NAS. I load up a 1817+ with Plex, Docker, run Unifi Video on it...etc and it doesn't break a sweat. If you use Plex Pass and do hardware transcoding on the 1019+ you can have 9 1080p streams going at once. It's a lot more capable than the stats suggest.

Is there a way to just run Synology or equivalent software on a full desktop PC or does that require too much tinkering and troubleshooting to integrate everything reliably as it appears they have? Not concerned about power consumption or noise.

I would very much like to see how you got Ubuntu working in docker. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't seem to connect to anything other than terminal.

Great stuff. I am considering the 1019+. I have seen Seagate drives which appear good for this. Would two or three smaller drives be a better way to go, or use less, but larger drives? Pretty basic question, I am new to these things. Thanks, peace.I really like your vids.

My question below relates to using the 1019 for Plex, and video, movie type uses.

These NAS units are great however one downside to me is that some units have a weak cpu. Also fan noise is a problem but you can swap out the fan as it does use a 3-pin regular motherboard connector but how about the hard drive. Are they running all the time or does it have power save mode if you have the NSA running all the time but it sits idle for long periods of time. Or is that something to just ignore and buy new hard drives when they start to fail. Any SMART monitoring etc ?

I have a 1517+ it runs great...only drawback is that I don’t have a j3455 I have the atom c2538...it can’t do too much of the transcoding on 4K stuff but it can handle direct play. I usually just offload the transcoding to my pc and just use the nas for the storage, backup, plex, and hdhomerun. I am thinking of buy a 10g nic card and get 10g lan in my work area. I get it that the device is expensive but I believe it’s worth it for all of the out of the box things it can do! Great review as always!

Is there any way to absolutely confirm if it will do HW transcoding? I'm looking at the DS418play and it's got intel quick sync video but I can't find any confirmation that it will work.

wait - isn't BTRFS a means of insuring that files are not corrupted due to bitrot or other drive issues while Snapshots is a different matter?

As Lon says: Be very careful when buying Synology. I bought a DS1817+ towards the end of 2017. Despite the near £1000 price tag for the box, I recently found that it is running a processor that was released in 2013 and cant do things like hardware transcoding.

Is it possible to upgrade to Synology entry level 1 bay nas from wdmycloud hard disk re-use
@KiraHerdman5 жыл бұрын
Yes, ive done it, the MyCloud I had had a 2Tb WD Red in it.

Wish Synology would rate them using the Quicksync chart. I want to upgrade from my DS920+ to maybe a six or 8 bay model but can't find which one supports what the 920 does. Seems Synology works backwards, the more disks it holds the less features it has!
@LonSeidman3 жыл бұрын
Look up the processor on board via the Intel feature browser here: lon.tv/quicksync

I do have the DS218+ and it work great. I can stream 2-3 video without problem. I do trancode most of my stuff before hand, but the device i quite capable of doing that without the transcoding in advance, I do that mostly to save space as 50gb vs 15gb for a bluray movie make more sense on a 4tb drive . Word of caution: their mobile app are bad, at least for IOS. You don't have way to explore your files easily. There are some 3rd party app (not free) that can do that but don't except to have a fantastic mobile experience . Same thing goes for there office mobile app. They work, but don't except much. Web version are fine base on my week of testing . Good surprise: Download station. It is kind of a torrent client, but do a lot. The app is really simple (except for the RSS feed if you want to setup some auto download) and can download pretty much everthing! You can download youtube, vimeo and problably a lot more juste by pasting the link to the video and not have to rely on some shady extension or website ! I use that part to store coding tutorial offline in a plex library ! Feel free to comment if you have any question related to the DS218+

I also have the 218+. One of the best tech products I've purchased in a while. I just wish they'd get better with the mobile apps. Especially since the desktop stuff is pretty good.

Hey Lon do you ever get asked to review a product and than do a give away. Where viewers can comment on the video and randomly select someone that wins the price like a NAS. I’m more interested in what you think of this as I do see other channels doing this, if you are a fan of doing give aways or not.
@LonSeidman5 жыл бұрын
I do some giveaways from time to time on the channel, many things are offered in a low cost sale to my patreon/donorbox supporters of the channel. Generally expensive items like this are returned to the manufacturers.
@MyTechGuyTim5 жыл бұрын
Lon.TV do you think that can change the channels mind or opinion or as long as they make the proper “full disclosures” it is ok.

i love your videos , but windows installation on nas ...noooo...slow ass fu... but then again docker is a god . good video as always
@dennisolof99945 жыл бұрын
No, Synology DiskStation is linux (or BSD) based but it might look like Windows. That is to make it more easy to use for the average consumer. The reason some devices are slow is because the CPU is weak on some units. Apparently some units do run windows now, as you said that suck.

Btrfs aka Volume Shadow Copy..
@Ccoolty5 жыл бұрын
Btrfs is pronounced as "butter fuss"
@Noodles.FreeUkraine5 жыл бұрын
It's pronounced "better eff ess" because that's what it means, a "better file system". I'm always astonished how even the geeks don't know that, it's just like constantly hearing "Ess Cue Ell" instead of correctly "See-kwel".
