i have an RP at work. The fan curves for the internal fans are good, but the power supply fan curve has an eager attack. The power supply fans are as loud as talking, without load on the system. I wish they were load-controlled or at least a bit more manual control to them. The double PSU variant houses smaller fans, which go higher in RPM and make more noise (and now there's two of them!). For real, have some rack away from your living/work space because this device is LOUD.

RS1221RP+ The PSU fans (FFB03812VN-SPC) run at 23000 RPM & 23 CFM I'd love to change the out. There's no way those PSUs need that much airflow. Smoke tested the main fans in quiet mode, they're deadheaded. I think you'd get more air flow through the case if you replaced the main fans with metal plates. But you'd still have that PSU noise. Time to move the rack to the basement.

I have 4x RS2418+ and these look and are specced almost identical with slight bumps in performance here and there. One immediate change is the built-in 10GBe NIC that I wish mine had. I am running two pairs of my RS2418+ in high availability, and even with adding a dual 10GBe NIC, it requires one of those to be dedicated to the cluster traffic (so no redundancy on the network side). I'd be curious to see (if you were able to get a second) how the RS2423+ compares in HA to the RS2418+. Also, I know you mentioned that the new model requires Synology branded drives. I'd love to see if you can get non-Synology branded drives working with being in warning/error mode permanently, or reducing the featureset afterwards. I'm concerned for the future with these models, as they're supposed to be in their "value" lineup, yet they have the restrictions they've placed on their "enterprise" models for disks. If that continues, the RS2418+ servers are the last to buy from them, since their "synology" branded drives are far too expensive in comparison to WD/Seagate NAS/Enterprise drives for any benefit. Also, as @mike_pj mentioned, fan control is non-existent once you add an expansion card, at least in the older models. I have a 10GBe NIC in each, and it disables your ability to change off of the Full-Speed mode.

I quite like my 920+ and was thinking maybe one day I could upgrade to a rack mount unit like this when it no longer serves my needs. I can't get over the "requires Synology brand drives" part though. No way. That takes this from future investment splurge to out of reach. 920+ will serve me well for a long while. Maybe I will want to go TrueNAS when it's time to upgrade.

I wonder if the fans could be swapped for Noctuas 👀 I’ve been looking at the RP2500, but the noise is a little off putting… Thinking on picking up the DS1823xs+ for mass storage for now and VMs/Docker stored on my main PC.

They are great for it. We use a 3621xs+ at work as our primary backup server. I have spun up multiple VM's at a time when hardware failure on the host has necessitated it. The Synology interface with Hyper-V makes backups incredibly simple and the restoration is a clean process rather you want to run it on the synology, restore it back to the original host or even restore it to another Hyper-V host. I cannot speak to VMware as we are a Hyper-V only shop. Also, in a rack full of Dell PE's the noise is not noticeable, unlike our old DATO...

Apparently, since there's only a single PCIe slot and no M.2 sockets onboard, you can't put both a 25GbE and NVMe SSD cache in together. Knocks this unit out of contention for me. Wasn't happy about the AMD processor either.

Hmmmm… I wonder if a swap out with Noctua fans would work with it. I've done this with an RS1221+ and even on full speed fan mode it's significantly quieter than the OEM fans. I permanently have it on cool mode and it's silent (SSDs inside). It is warmer than with the OEM fans for sure but the room its in is climate controlled so the impact is only a few degrees that's still well away from 60⁰C.

These are definitely loud, but it looks like they've improved fan control with the RS2423+. I have the RS2418+ ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZvWqahopbWsf6M ) and it was relatively quiet if you didn't add an expansion card. As soon as you add a 10GbE card though, it would force you out of the quiet mode and be quite a bit louder. I'm curious if you notice a difference when the 25GbE card isn't installed.

Hi SpaceRex, can you help out? I have an ds723+ (with 2x8tb non btrfs) and bought an ds923+ plus one 8tb drive, to upgrade to btrfs. So my plan is to set the 923+ with 1 drive to brtfs, transfer everything to that ds923+ and when that is done I shut down The 723+ and format The drives and add them to The 923+. Would The best option be to use Synology Drive, sync Nas to Nas. And when everything is synced shut down The 723+? In this way i dont need double The space, like you would with Hyper Backup. And would it be a smart thing to transfer The DSM settings etc first by The migration tool? Love to hear what you think

Depends what your doing, raid6 or SHR2 is recommended because it can handle dual faults (failed/repairing + problems with another drive or second full failure) It's a USB or SATA DOM (not so-dimm)
