As much as know in my heart it's a superior product overall head-to-head in premade systems straight out of the box, but dang it, to need to spend 2.5X $$ up front, their machines aren't upgradeable, _expandable_ to some degree (peripherals) but practically non-upgradeable internal hardware-wise to any worthy level, and any future accessories are priced sky-high, it eradicates what previously was the *initial* _performance_ incentive. One better be happy with what's inside that expensive box, because come the day you outgrow it you'll have to sell it, split the difference, and *buy another BOX* , hope whatever is inside *that box* is sufficient for your current workflow, because *that's* what you'll "be stuck with" from then on, _until you outgrow that one too_ , eventually, and so on..... *They're not getting my money.* Better machine out of the box - yes. Better value over the long haul - *_NO._* I'm sorry but I do actually sometimes wonder if other companies like Synology are jealous of how rich and powerful Apple got, despite that despicable business model, and have made it their mission to try to emulate them. Very sad if that's the case.... yet, instances like this do persist & cause me to wonder if Apple-wannabes actually are up to that after all......

In my studio's that's another situation, we use enterprise drives from TDK server drives. 8 servers with each 8 bays and the drives are 16Tb the servers are HP enterprise servers on 10Gbps infrastructure. They serve my 2 company's. But that is a total other price range and you can't compare with NAS systems.

I bought a DS1621xs+ in 2021 and looking to add a new DS1823xs+ while it was coming out, because of what they did with drives, i decide to build a Unraid server and move my data over. Now my old DS1823xs+ is only used to backup photos and active backup systems. its really sad where synology went from to where. i would not consider buying another synology untill i can use the after market drives. its just not worth it. Synology went from selling NAS to selling drives for thier NAS. Good luck Synology!

Here is the problem with greed. It will never know any bounds and will always be justified in the mind of the greedy. When you see a company start down this route you really have to think of the organization as having a sickness. That sickness will either be remedied by someone who knows how to control greed (The sickness) or it will kill the company. Rarely does this sickness ever become manageable. You are seeing this sickness in all kinds of corporations. Fast food industries are driving people to restaurants. Companies like Broadcom / VMware are driving their most important asset (customers) into their competitors arms. The world is becoming more wicked by the day and people are sitting around scratching their head and saying when is enough enough? Unfortunately for the sick, never. Once they taste the profits, they only want more, more, more. This is nothing new. But the rate of infection we are seeing... Now that is alarming.

I absolutely love Synology systems. We use them exclusively across our corporation but the requirement of Synology Drives on certain (I thought all rack mount) systems is crazy. We have two configured by our business partner that have "orange" drives and it is annoying to the point I looked for a way to fix it through a script. Google can be your friend. Now, I just hope they remove that silly restriction or price their drives within reason of the competition.

Buying the RS3621xs+ after selling the idea for my client to stop buying Dell servers for video storage. Checked the 100% price markup on synology and decided to get non-synology drives. I would have even paid an extra $100 per drive to go Synology but paying 2x more is robbery.

I do agree with the sentiment of what your saying here with regards to clarity within their own product stack although all things considered is it any worse than say 3rd party drive manufacturers themselves? For instance, what physically differentiates a WD Red that is marketed for NAS "with up to 8 bays" versus the Red Pro. Exactly what's different that I should use the Red Pro in a DS3622xs+ outside of larger available drive sizes? What does one say when populating the same said DS3622xs+ with 2 x 6-bay storage pools? The same goes for Seagate Ironwolf/Ironwolf Pro and its my understanding the Synology Plus series HDDs are a rebranded Ironwolf. Is that any simpler?? Do you really expect the stated usage conditions for the Synology Plus HDD to be different to an Ironwolf? My guess is that if someone wants all Synology HDDs to work in all Synology NAS devices then all we'd have is the HAT5300 series drives. Personally I don't want that because I can buy the Synology HAT3310-16T cheaper than the Seagate Ironwolf Pro equivalent to put into a Synology NAS and that's perfect for the vast majority of deployments.

The whole compatibility list is a mess. We needed some M.2 cache for our RS1619xs+ servers. None of the approved SSDs were still being produced. I wrote to support about the Synology branded M.2s and they specifically said they had issues with them on that model. I had to source old stock drives to get compatibility with was essential to have a read/write cache. I don’t mind a compatibility requirement but they to be adding new drives to old devices. i wonder if the issue here is they just haven’t tested the plus drives with all the older models.

Their compatibility lists are really lacking in general. The Seagate Ironwolf Pro NT series has been out for at least 20 months now and hasn't been added to any of their compatibility lists from what I can see.
@Gryfang4517 ай бұрын
Here's another problem on the RS models. You may upgrade DSM and find your drives are no longer compatible! I've got a bunch of Synology drives waiting for the time to swap out so I can upgrade one of mine. Also had two DS2015s that wouldn't even recognize the drives after updating DSM. Replaced them with drives on the compatibility list, and they still didn't work. Gotta say they're driving me to NETApp or regular file servers using SANs. Really a pain to use their stuff when they mess up like this regularly.
@coolcat237 ай бұрын
I am pretty sure you criticised the orange volume status in a much earlier video and rightly so because this status for "incompatible" drives may mask any actual problems, i.e., one always has too look deeper to see whether there are any actual errors. Now it is just a "psychological" problem but a WD smart report warning (that Synology chose to take seriously and only affected a few drives) was sufficient reason to part with WD? Finally, why not mention the possibility to turn off the compatibility checking? I don't get this "one cannot figure out compatibility" complaint. One looks up the compatibility list, done. What is hard about that? Complain about the unjustified measurements to drive people into paying more (even 7% or 10% are not justifiable), instead of making a long complaint video about the fact that one has to visit a web page to figure out whether the artificially imposed compatibility exists or not.

You can see what happened here. Synology is getting squeezed in the NAS market due to the competitive pressure from all the NAS makers. They probably started offering the branded HDs as a value added service, but discovered they were making more margin off the HDs than they were off their NAS systems.

Isn't this "compatibility" list fraudulent anyway? I mean that's why we have industry standards so we don't need such lists, especially for something completely standardized like regular hard drives. I think sooner or later someone will sue Synology for doing that and rightfully so.

Whether HDD is on compatibility list or not Synology would not compensate you on an data loss. So there is no need to buy their overpriced HDDs. Just buy HDDs from regular providers like Toshiba - these are quality HDDs at reasonable price. And for that annoying "not compatible" messaging from DSM just hack their disk compatibility DB in DSM's installation. There are ways to do so described in forums.

Someone at Synology is going to see this video and decide to “FiX” this issue by just removing the plus model drives from the compatibility list for all “enterprise class” Synology NAS units
@tobiastessmer51257 ай бұрын
It’s not confusing, it‘s arbitrary. As is the requirement to use Synology only drives. Making money is what it is. Those lists are not real anymore, so they use them to scare everybody to buy the enterprise drives, but they can still say that some boxes accept the cheaper drives. 😊

It appears that Synology is appealing to low- to mid-level enterprise systems rather than home users and enthusiasts. While I understand the conservative position on hardware to better ensure reliability (I have 2 Synology units, the oldest being 9 years old, and they have functioned well), their silence around affordable all flash units is telling. I also like their integrated software, but it is (somewhat) easily replaceable by other available software. The next time that I am in the market for a new NAS, it will not be Synology unless some of these issues are addressed.
