This is so amazing. When I was a dj back in the day this was the most requested song ever. In one club so many wanted to hear it one more time so when it was over I simply lifted the pic up and placed it from start again on the record. Probably the ugliest mix i ever done. But the most loved mix I ever done. That's why this song has a very special place in my heart. It must be the best commercial trance song ever made.

I have seen this clip several times now and I keep clicking it again and again. It surprises me a bit since this song was never one of my favourites when it was performad by Snap, although I thought it was quite good. There is just something with this performance that really speaks to me. The fact that all synth parts are played live is really fascinating and the outcome is a really tight live performance. The lovely singer is also amazing. A beatiful voice making a wonderful performance. The recreation of the different sounds in the song is also high quality. Thanks for sharing this and keep up good work!

Yeah, this just proves that electronic music can be played totally live... you don't need freaking sequencers all the time. Sure, it does require like 6 keyboard players or something (more or less depending on the songs and how many instruments they require), but it can be done. Plus, having several keyboards on stage would probably look very cool visually! :))

I just now listened to this. But, seriously, the fact that you took on the somewhat challenging task of performing this completely live, without just playing it safe and resorting to sequencers or backing tracks, is really commendable. Just goes to show that you don't "need" sequencers or backing tracks to perform electronic music live! In fact, when I was brand new to the techno/EDM genre I actually thought this was how everyone would perform a techno concert; just bring some drum machines and synthesizer keyboards onto the stage and play on them like real instruments, by manually hitting the keys/buttons/pads to play all the notes/chords/drum sounds in your songs! :))) Well, I thought this way until I learned about sequencing, DJing and so on.
@Synt52 жыл бұрын
Thanks for such a detailed comment. I should note that, while the melodic lines are indeed played live, the drums are actually sequenced and triggered from the sampler, so purists might not consider this to be entirely "live," but anyway... Thinking about this topic, it is really interesting to notice that the vast majority of electronic arrangements from this era (or any other era) was never intended to be played live. It does indeed take an army of synths, but I'd say it's worth it :) Cheers
@justinnaramor60502 жыл бұрын
@@Synt5 Ah, I see. It's still quite fascinating though! You know, I have had a thought as I've been thinking about this topic: there was probably a time in electronic music's history where the only way to perform a concert was to play everything manually, by hitting the keys and pads to play the notes/chords/sounds in a song. I mean, we obviously have electronic musical instruments that are played manually, just as how any acoustic musical instrument is played manually, so this would make sense. This manual playing method would've likely been very common, until sequencers became common and complex enough that electronic music artists eventually forsook an all-manual human performance in favor of inhumanly complex musical ideas that could only be realized with sequencers. I bet some of the "synthpop" bands from the 70s, for example, probably played their music manually, and this is how they would've performed their concerts as well; not that different from any rock band or jazz band or orchestra that plays all the parts manually. I mean, it's possible right? Also, related to that, there are probably some techno/EDM bands that have simple-enough musical parts, enough members in the band and few enough instruments in their songs that they can easily play it all completely live with no problem. Like for example, you might have a techno band that only needs 2 keyboardists and a third member playing pads on a drum machine, with no sequencers, loops or backing tracks at all. That's basically as simple as you can get. Very minimalistic. There's actually a "synthpop" band I found called "COSBY" (yes, the all-capital letters were intentional), and I think this is what their setup is like. So they would have no problem playing a concert this way, and this would be a real live human performance entirely with electronic instruments!
@Synt52 жыл бұрын
@@justinnaramor6050 Interesting thoughts indeed, thanks for sharing them. I think it is really a matter of different performance philosophies. Nowadays there's nothing preventing people from playing synths live like this, but still it's difficult to find someone willing to do that. Thanks for the band suggestion, I'll check that out. Cheers!
@justinnaramor60502 жыл бұрын
@@Synt5 Cool. Regarding that band I mentioned, I think they're actually not normally a synthpop band and they're more of a normal rock band (as the description on the video I found of them playing seemed to imply), but in the song I found, they did explore the synthpop style. The song was called "Spaceships". I forgot to mention also that I'm visually impaired to the point of being blind. So, when I listened to that synthpop song, I obviously couldn't see what the band was actually doing. But from the video description, it appears to me they were using 3 keyboardists and a vocalist. So what about the drums? Well it appears to me one of the keyboardists was also playing drum parts live at the same time (you know, kind of like some of those "one-man bands" you might see at fairs or on streets). The drums were played on an Akai MPD226 which is an instrument you play with your fingers, so I'm imagining that this keyboardist in the band was playing the MPD226 with the fingers on one hand while using the fingers on the other hand to play his respective keyboard part. The other 2 keyboardists took care of the other keyboard parts. And as I listen to it, I can indeed hear that there are exactly 3 keyboard parts, particularly at the chorus of the song: (1) a bass line, (2) some chords, and (3) a melody line. The melody line was pretty much non-existant during the verses. The melody line is simple enough that it can be played one-handed (I should know; I'm a keyboardist myself), so I'd imagine the keyboardist playing that melody was also the one doing the finger drumming at the same time. Then the second keyboardist play the bass line while the third keyboardist played the chords. These are just my observations, but as I said I can't see them doing it because of my blindness, so someone with vision who watches the video should confirm this for me :)))
@Synt52 жыл бұрын
@@justinnaramor6050 Hi, I think I've found the video you were referring to, it's not their studio recording, but a live version of the song, correct? I can break it down for you: yes, there are three keyboard players and a singer. The first sounds heard during the introduction, before the bass and the drums come in, are a DSI OB-6 playing chords on the left channel, and a Nord Electro 5D playing a small melody line on the right channel (they reflect their spatial position on stage, where the OB-6 is on the left, and the Nord is on the right). Both instruments maintain their left/right position throughout the song, so it is possible to identify what they are doing. As for the repeating bassline, that comes from the Moog, and is panned at the center. The bassline is partially played by hand, as in the hand holds the note, but each note repetition is actually being triggered by an external source, and for that reason it sounds so exact and machine-like. The drums are actually not being played by hand: the same guy on the Moog is using the Akai MPD to trigger the drum parts, so each pad functions as an on/off switch. The Akai appears to be connected to a tablet that is not mentioned in the description, which is where they seem to be playing the drums sequences from. In summary, a simple yet effective setup. It pretty much resembles what we used in our video, only that I used a sampler to play the drums, and not a sequencer. Indeed, now looking at it, it appears to be really difficult to find a synthpop band that plays everything by hand, including drums. Maybe I could try to address that in a future video.
