You can absolutely have this kind of humor. It's just a matter of whether or not it's all in good fun. Like with Mel Brookes and Blazing Saddles. You just have to ignore the whiney liberal white saviors. They act like they speak on behalf of ALL black folks and those who rebuke them get racial slurs thrown at them like you wouldn't believe.

Bullhorn is a reference to Dolemite, from the rhyming, to the fight scenes where it's obvious he never makes contact when throwing a punch. Look up Dolemite, cause the clips on youtube show just about all the things you are seeing in Black Dynamite, from the boom mic dropping into view, to the fight scenes where the actors throw themselves back 10 seconds before a punch is thrown.

That one guy @15:02 who say "Sarcastically, I'm in charge" is reading the script directions along with his lines. The joke is that the script is telling him to say "I'm in charge" in a sarcastic voice, but he mistakenly reads the script direction as part of his spoken dialogue. He does this again later as well. That's what I love about this movie, you always discover something else each time you watch it.

I'm not black but I was 10 years old in 1971. I have seen quite a few Blaxploitation movies then and since then. They are of course uneven but generally I enjoy their cool "vibe." Sure maybe they exploited the very real socioeconomic problems that American inner cities were going through but I never thought I was watching a documentary. They did, through entertainment, actually make me aware of those basic problems even though they didn't suggest too may realistic solutions. As to their low-budget quality let's all remember there were quite a few "white" drive -in movies made then as well, usually involving biker gangs and blonde babes. It was a great time for youthful low-budget cinema across the ethno-cultural board. These movies all have a charm and I have a great affection to this day for their spirit. Black Dynamite, though it is a send-up, also shows a lot of love and affection towards those movies and their times. For more send-ups please check out the Dolemite and Funkenstein sketches from MAD TV!

P.S. I think you *should* do a weekly Blaxploitation/Karate Movie Day (for Saturday afternoons--when else? :)) but you should mix it up with the docudramas--"Dragon," "Baadasss," "Dolomite is My Name" with Eddie Murphy, etc.. so you can explain the whole era. (Would you risk doing "Spook/Door" or "Five/Blackhand Side?" Hmmm.) If you go the edutainment route one day a week, don't go halfway! Right or not at all, baby! LOL!!!

If you haven't seen it, the 1975 movie "Dolomite" by Rudy Ray Moore, was probably the main inspiration for this movie. It was made on a shoe string budget, Rudy basically used his limited martial arts skills and pretty much wrote it as he filmed. They even made a "biopic" called "Dolomite is my name" starting Eddie Murphy, that isn't too bad. Oh and while not in the same vain, Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown" staring Pam Grier, is great too.

I feel like black cinema storytelling changes within every twenty years or so. The seventies had blaxploitation, the nineties had hood movies, and the 2010s saw a rise of what people call slave movies. For me, I would love to see afrofuturism take off as the next new thing. It's taken off in books, and since 99% of Hollywood stories are based off of novels I think it's only a matter of time before we get that genre.

I had never experienced anything like this before or since, as far as audience energy goes, not even Endgame! The MOST fun. My stomach hurt from laughing. When the car door got stuck in the grass during his getaway, I've never felt like more a part of my Generation than I did when the laughter hit the theater like a tidal wave. Like, we ALL remembered that shit happening. Seeing it in a movie like this was too much, most of the movie felt this way, but for some reason, that car door gag hit everyone different. What a great memory. And what fun to enjoy seeing you two watch this and get similarly bowled over by the genius-level idiotic niche humor in this movie.

There have been a few decent homages to blaxploitation cinema. Comedies such as I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and Undercover Brother are among the best, but Black Dynamite is the platinum standard , not just a parody of the plot clichés, but also the low budget production values such as visible boom microphones and poor editing. By far, this was the best reaction to this movie that I've seen so far. Your knowledge of the various actors appearing throughout the movie shows that you two are definitely students of cinema and have enormous respect for the craft.
