In general, less gear equals more music. Not always, of course, but there are definite tradeoffs for how people spend their studio time... more time on hardware and sound design means less time on other things, like composition and production.

Great vid. Trying to purge my own collection atm so this was good timing! That's really good to know re: the gain onf Go Mixer Pro X. I had the previous Go Mixer Pro and also found that it was just waaaay too quiet, even if I cranked the single volume dial up. Also, found it pretty annoying that the headphone monitor level is the same as the recording level... if they could split the two out and have separate controls maybe that would solve for the gain issue? Ah well. I also sold my Infinite Jets recently. I just really couldn't get on with it, and the whole time I was using it I was wishing I had a Microcosm instead lol.

I'm currently going through a "Does this spark joy?" process - bingeing one by one on each piece of gear that I've been neglecting just in case the problem was me being too lazy to get up the learning curve. The Mono Station won me over. Next up is the Boutique JP-08 - cute faders but does everything have to sound like it's gone through a Jupiterize filter rather than a Jupiter filter?

curious what won you over about the monostation
@oldunclemick
@oldunclemick Жыл бұрын
@@maarzt it was mostly figuring out how to get the sequencer to put in more expression to make the sequence more dynamic and exciting. Learning how to use the velocity and the mod track in the mod matrix was a big part of that. Tricks like modulating the distortion to add a speck of bite to particular notes. Also finding the sweet spots in the synth - it seemed to switch too easily from bland to over-the-top or from thin to muddy. It's not one of those synths where even the raw oscillator output sounds cool (e.g. Cat or 2600). The sweet spot on the Mono Station wasn't as easy for me to find as on the Neutron or the MicroKORG etc. Using the LFO in sync mode is handy too - either like a second envelope or to add syncopation.

Alesis sr16, zoom r8 mixer/recorder, whole bevy of pedals, and a Minilogue. It was such a jumble that I wasn't even playing anymore. Sold off everything but the synths. Got a drumbrute, pedals that made sense, built a small eurorack kit around Morphagene, finally got the grandmother, sp404mk2, and an rk008 to sequence it all... Oh and I just got a 1010 bluebox to mix and record, although I do have a cheap behringer 1208 mixer that I don't have space for currently... It makes sense for you as a KZbin, Liam. When your agenda is to show new gear all the time, then that's the #input stream. Wenn there's no #output stream, your place will be flooded after a while :-D With most of us hobbyist musicians, it's a different setting I think. I personally am at this point too, where I have a tad too many devices. Not sure what will leave the house, but I am not thinking about getting more or different stuff. I have no need to constantly change, especially since I now have what I always wanted and it's just as awesome as I anticipated it to be. But I am only doing this for my own pleasure. That being said, I am in the process of adjusting my decade-old thinking. Which is that I want all my gear to be available with any option at all times. Which would boil down to a huge mixing console and a plethora of MIDI routing. I simply do not have the space for that. And quite costly it would be, too. And even IF I had set this monster up, I only have two arms and one brain to keep it all running. I do everything on the fly, no computers, recording just straight to a stereo-mix. Sitting in front of a screen while nudging audio blocks back and forth plus staring at PlugIns is just not my thing. Having only one device isn't doing it for me either, but I will not buy any more things now.

I finally got a digitakt and so model:samples has to go. Too much overlap and I never connected with that thing....but still, way too easy to just say "maybe I'll keep it". Keeping the model:cycles though. It and Volca Drum are just great. I bought a POM 400 and POM 16 that I got for dirt cheap and they just look so cool that I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Honestly don't think I ever will. That POM 400 is always going to turn heads. I've got that Cre8audio case and think it's just such a great portable rig, can't say enough good things about it to someone getting into modular. Microcosm don't have but happy with Zoia (and its readily available patches to download). Get a Deluge. Takes some time but my fav dawless hub (over mpc live, digitakt, octatrack, beatstep pro, circuit tracks, etc). I'm in the market to switch out my mpc one to force.

I'm learning to be more thoughtful in my GAS purchases. Ever since I started buying gear, I've just bought things to try, if I really liked it I'd keep it, if not I'd sell. But I'm sick of buying and selling gear! I'm getting into the Behringer System 100 modules at the moment as I had a semi-modular System 100 synth back in the 90s/early 2000s which I loved and still dream of. Sure, the Behringer is more of a clone of the 100m, but the sound is very similar.

My shoes are dawless, but I just call them shoes. My synth doesn't have a bathroom, but I don't call it bathroomless. Know what I mean? Okay that's all byeee 💘

Ummm.. Mc707 and minibrute 2s are NOT high end gear:) Mid tier at best (dont get me wrong, I use Minibrute 2S with my modular, its a great synth and sequencer, but not high end - DSI Mopho will leave it in the dust and it is 10 years older. See stuff like Analogue Solutions and their synths for high end gear - please do not take offense, I did not mean to be rude). If you want, I'll take those Infinite Jets from you.

@earlsfield Жыл бұрын
@@LiamKillen oh sure, you might like both units, the workflow, the sound - I just can’t look at 707 in the same category as Tempest, Analog Rytm or MachineDrum, Tanzbar, Pulsar 23 - these are all high end machines where MC 707 floats somewhere in the middle - and I am sorry for that, for the fact that Roland does not have a flagship, serious analogue machine packed in a modern form factor and paired with samples. Minibrute 2S can sound massive, be very practical when paired with other modules, but again, take any Fatty or Subsequent, or Mother series, it will clearly beat it in all fields. Same with Pro 3, Pro 2, even as I said, older Mopho or Evolver. There are plenty high end synths nowdays, and while we may love and like these two machines you mentioned, they are clearly budget units vs these I have mentioned.
@earlsfield

@@LiamKillen Here is an idea - lets make one track using 707 and 2S ONLY, then the same track with Analog Rytm and Pro 3. No fancy plugins, nothing except eq and basic compression. Or you make the OG track with 707 and 2s and send me midi files, I will use AR and Pro 3 - and we can compare. Ofc I will record everything just so its 100% legit.

4:15 'It has its little problems, but so does all dawless gear.' Dawless gear is a new one! 🤣As opposed to a laptop, tablet, newer MPC's and such? I know you just meant standalone hardware in general, but I had to point it out.
@LiamKillen
@LiamKillen Жыл бұрын
Standalone hardware can be classified as dawless IMO- gear that doesn’t use a desktop DAW to function- but still a tool that you’re able to complete a full on track with. Grooveboxes / samplers nowadays can be considered DAWLESS as well.
@ringtangting
@ringtangting Жыл бұрын
@@LiamKillen Sure, but the gear with a DAW (or a scaled down version) of a DAW are the exceptions, right? Most hardware doesn't have a DAW. Hardware samplers and grooveboxes have always been dawless. The new boxes like MPC One that house a scaled down daw are the exceptions.

I think one of the things that you are missing with the gear you have or maybe rather emphasizing too much is how they make you money, etc. Like...obviously everyone uses gear for different reasons, but It would have been nice to preface the entire video with that because after mentioning 'it looks good on instagram' etc. or whatever a couple of times (in various forms of that sentiment) it feels less like, "My work flow doesn't need them" and more like, "My use of gear as social media cash flow AND my work flow don't fit". If that makes sense. None of this is to be taken as mean spirited, but just like...for us not making videos, that kind of stuff doesn't matter, really. If a piece of gear is rare or ugly or common and pretty, etc. Those aren't really things some of us out there consider. Photogenic gear isn't a priority for us just wanting to mash pads and twist knobs. Anyway, still interesting. I'd have kept the PO's, though. They don't take up any room. lol
@LiamKillen
@LiamKillen Жыл бұрын
Hey Jeremy, I did emphasize practicality of all the gear in this video as well. That being said, I do believe that aesthetic plays a big roll in using/playing a piece of gear whether or not you’re going to be filming said piece of gear- I think it’s more important than most synthies are willing to admit. I respect your take and also feel like you’re speaking for a lot of people watching this video who may be on a different part of the “gear and interest spectrum” than you.

@@LiamKillen Well, yeah, we want our gear to look great. I love the 90's Yamaha aesthetic of the RS7000 that I own, but ultimately, I don't think about that when I'm using it. I have an MC101 and it's aesthetic is very simple and I ended up just slathering stickers on it to give it a little life, but what I jive with most on it is it's 'focus'. That said, I still think you should keep the PO's cause they're tiny and cool and that's lame you got screwed on the SP303. Buying used gear is always a gamble, but I never thought about the possibility of being a 'personality' to be taken advantage of just because I bought a used ESX back in 2009 and I got it and it was full of sawdust(!) and none of the buttons worked! I was and am still basically unknown so we all get taken advantage of when someone is out there wanting to do it.

@@LiamKillen yes like a model D from behringer but OP-1 and those fake eurorack stuff man.. I'm so happy that from the beginning of my journey I quickly discovered the pleasure of well thought designs that are practical and deliver out of this world sounds. I had that studio filled with junk and over 30-40 synths wich have all been replaced within the year for more expensive (better designed) machines. Not all expensive is better but if you talk about groove boxes and synthesizers... It tbh mostly is. I can't describe the pleasure I get from my prophet X and moog/elektrons, everytime I try a cheaper synth like miniloge or stuff it just takes so much more energy to get a worse result. Most gear companies they try to make u believe u need magic tricks and little hacks etc... It's all very simple and straight forward its like all these mixing tutorials.. You can give an ape a golden ring but that doesn't make it better the core sound must be good, some basic EQ and compression adjusted in the right listening environment and you're done. Some stuff you just know it will get the flow going and only focus on those items. But I see u get it, was not meant offensive or anything I just see so many friends etc.. getting lost in their view and can't separate the junk from the goldies. Every beginner should learn that it has to be what it needs to be and all other stuff is disposable. If it can't do something then get rid of it all and buy that thing you know can do everything u need. sorry for the bible Maybe I need to start a channel and talk about this 🤣
