I've watched several reviews and demos of this unit and still haven't heard a realistic snare drum or cymbal sound come out of it. It might be useful to some House or Electronic music composers, but definitely wouldn't cut it for rock or jazz or country or any other music genre. When will these manufacturers come up with a unit that sounds remotely close to an acoustic drum kit? I don't care about all the other crazy things it can do. Make something that sounds like real drums.

Rotary mixers are cool, and the MasterSounds Radius is the one I would pick if I was getting one. HPFs are the best! That would've been cool if they cleaned up the right side of the mixer and either made it more compact or fit in a Beat FX-type section. But just cramming in a weird-ass binary FX section WITHOUT relocating any of the existing knobs - except for pushing the isolator over to the right? Well... That's ridiculous. I don't know anything about why Andy Rigby-Jones left Allen & Heath or why he also stopped working with MasterSounds. But it's starting to look like he might be an insane diva. How can the guy who made the Xone 92 and worked on the Model 1 with Richie Hawtin be the same guy who said, "Hey guys let's take the sexy MasterSounds design and drill a few holes in it and install some digital FX!" Yeah, that's a great idea.

i have the digitone, syntakt and a4mk2……20 outs directly into my daw using only 3 usb slots using overbridge…..works perfectly. not sure that the smaller boxes not having individual outs is a problem when using usb they can be used for individual outs over usb…???
@LiamKillen3 күн бұрын
It's a good point - it's just not the same though. IMO you lose a lot of character when you drop stems into overbridge. I remember doing it a while ago solo with the Digitakt and having to re add all sorts of FX in my DAW which changed the character of the original idea. Using hardware is just a different thing where you have more hands on control and it sounds better. I'm using the SSL Big Six which is fully Analog - but also audio over USB, but that character you hear through the mixer translates to your stems. It's apples and oranges in the end.

That’s the kind of mixer that a techno headliner makes the production company rent for him…. It cost a lot and there is a big run around to find it…. Then the headliner ends up not using it.

Wow I heard positive and negative feedback on Perkons, but I never heard anyone calling it cheesy lol. I love drum machines and I have quite a few - from retro stuff like Yamaha RX17, R-8, 606, small boxes like Volcas and LXR-02, to my go - to Analogue Rytm, Machine Drum, Tempest, Tanzbar, a few modular drum synths and FM driven stuff like Blast Beats and Digitone. I was eager to get Perkons when it came out as it really sounded unique - it would be worth checking Superbooth 2021 presentation of Perkons, guy from Erica had a killer performance, but also it sounds so different. And honestly, it hardly sounded cheesy or “standard” in any way - it doesn’t have analogue feel, it doesn’t sound like any of the Roland machines and it is, like many others, 4 channels of whatever you make of it, with a very cool sequencer. I like what Matteo did with it, and I do advise you pair it up with another groove boxes and treat Perkons as an addition to your percussion and melody, rather than core drum stuff (although it can do it quite well). The reason for closed architecture is, this is not a sampler - the waveforms used in Perkons have been curated with a lots of attention to drum synthesis, and opening it to sample loading would drop the focus from what it does the best. I mean, I don’t know many beat oriented machines that care about Karplus-Strong. You can turn Perkons into wild, droning machine and I think they were gunning for unique sound from the get go - it does have that industrial dirt all over it and I honestly used it in industrial, hard techno and cinematic tracks where it really sounds like thunder.
@LiamKillen2 күн бұрын
The only thing that I think is cheesy are the initial digital sounds that they have uploaded into the unit. I find it to be an interesting choice that they don't at least you to upload your own samples, that would open up the unit so much. But what Mateo showed in this video is that with all of the modulation and FX, the end result is very far from being cheesy.
@earlsfield2 күн бұрын
@@LiamKillen I honestly think uploading user waves would totally ruin the device. It would make it into some kind of hybrid sampler, which it is not. The only reason the unit is not fully analogue is the fact ES wanted to have broader palette of source sounds that just classics(and there are classics in the simple drum). I honestly do not find them cheesy, of course, it is subjective. But as i said before, I think closing the system to user waves was deliberate choice so you can focus on drum synthesis with the palette you are given - and honestly, I would hate to hear 606 kick through this machine. Many other developers do the same, think Hydrasynth - their representative almost yelled at me when I asked if there will be a firmware upgrade allowing the user wavetables lol

It wasn't available three years ago, but I wish it was...I would have never bought or needed so much gear. I could sell everything but the MPC and still be happy and productive. Kinda pissed...what am I gonna do with all this stuff? Werkstatt, Volca Drum, Microfreak, NTS-1, Roland S1 and E4, VS Pro mini, Keystep and Keystep Pro...all gear that is probably never gonna be used again. Some others, like my Behringer clones, my Hydrasynth, my SP-404MK2, and my TR-8S are keepers, but I certainly don't need them anymore. And I thought I was going into DAWless knowing what I was doing.

You’re creating your own form of punishment to any creator who may be in this situation where they’ve been depending on them as a sponsor *to make a living* - in some cases for years, in a time where financially, the economy is tight. They’ve been THE biggest supporters of the online / content / gear space community just to paint you a picture here. I don’t suggest you boycott videos of people who are in this position, where decisions being made are completely out of creators’ control, but they’re still offering you content / information that could be useful / entertaining to you. Either way, all the best- always appreciate your viewership. I would just suggest skipping the ads.

When your main selling points are its aesthetics and how it suits house music, it comes off as lacking substance. Honestly, it looks more like a toy than a serious piece of equipment. Just my perspective, but I think focusing on the technical aspects and performance would make for a stronger pitch.

It's really just a mixing thing in the end, but for whatever reason, at least in my experience, yes - the TR-8S just seems to sound thin in comparison to a lot of my other drum machines. This is why I use it as like a "top layer" sort of thing a lot of the time.
