Hello Synth Chaser!!! Thanks for this instructional videos you share with the community. I'm an owner of a P5, and I found it very interesting and useful even for someone like me, with not high skills on electronics. I have a question, probably something obvious to technicians but not for me. Why CV is changing from first test (4,459 V) to latest test (4,135V) if you are triggering same keyboard note? Congratulations for your videos!!!

When the Prophet 5 came out, I had no clue how it worked so I thought it had a very expensive D/A converter for each voice and every analog control. No wonder it was so expensive! Now that I'm smarter, I understand that it just multiplexes a single D/A converter to multiple sample and hold circuits. Well, that makes a lot more sense.

Now in 2021 it's cheaper to throw a DAC at each one rather than have sample & holds.

@@Synthchaser Yes! Remember when DACs were so expensive that some early CD players would quickly multiplex one of them between the stereo channels? On an oscilloscope you could see that a mono test signal would have a very slight phase shift between the two channels.

This reminds me of working with my dad on my first synth a jx8p that he would fix. Do you think that my prophet 6 will Be able to be fixed by guys like you in the future being modern and smt?

The parts being SMD aren't the problem, I have gear to work on SMD stuff. The concern would be availability of parts, replacement of MCUs with embedded firmware, FPGAs and other ASICs would require donor synths, whereas many of the ICs in older analog synths are still manufactured.

Hi Synth Chaser, I was curious if that Rigol your using there in this video does Duty Cycle as well ? And if so why in other OB-Xa videos you used the Tektronics to measure Duty Cycle ? I need to get one and I don't know which one would be best for me. I mainly need to accurately measure Duty Cycle for now, but also want something I can grow into that would accomplish all my future synth calibrating/tech tasks.

The Rigol does duty cycle and most if not all the same measurements that the Tek does. I have a few scopes and they come and go... In my older videos I was still using that Tek scope as my daily driver, but the fan was loud and it was bulky so I now opt for the Rigol for synth work. I believe that Tek scope was 1GHz which was overkill for synth stuff.

@@Synthchaser Thanks so much for the valuable info. Sounds like the Rigol DS1054Z is the way to go. Compact, looks nice, cost is pretty fair for what it does, and has lots of features for me as a beginner tech. I also need a much more precise Multimeter than the ones I been using. I like your Philips PM2534 System Multimeter, but it seems to not be in production anymore. Used they are like $250 though. Not bad. Do you have any recommendations as far as that ? Used Philips ? Or is there something new that does the same for approx same value ? Anyway appreciate your time brother !, thank you !

The handheld Fluke I use has a high res mode which is good enough for most stuff. I think the Philips system multimeter is still the best value for a 6.5 digit DMM. They used to be $100-150 but then Dave Jones (EEVblog) let the cat out of the bag (naturally, after I had already sold my spare).

Thanks for sharing. This Prophet 5 doesn't show up as for sale on your web site. I suppose it's been sold already ?

Haven't posted it for sale yet. I'm going to make 2 more videos with it - one on how to load factory patches and then another with the sounds of the factory patches. Then it will be for sale. Will post the link to it on the final video and on Facebook. Thanks!
