Cork is getting expensive. It's a natural product and not an infinite supply, as it the bark from a specific tree. Synthetic corks are much cheaper, although extremely bad for the environment.

Are we forgetting that natural corks are prone to becoming contaminated and turning the wine rancid? Also there was another master winemaker in interview saying that they use this specific type of cork because it provides sustainable and exact repeatable results so they can flavor their wines accordingly, Because it is a business and they need Exact results. they can also order them in specific sizes if need to. And remember the economies of scale this is most effective when applied to cheap mass produced wine that you're going to drink a single time of course any true collector is not going to use a foam or bottle cap for their wine that they planned to keep for 60 years... And don't get me started on how Box wine is lighter cheaper and can stay fresh longer and easier to ship, Making for more savings and ultimately a better wine.
