First video with the new computer and WOOO night and day! Can actually use certain effects! Incredibly excited to get into cubase 13 and adobe premiere. Everything seems to be working so well, truly amazed! Yay!

thanks! it'll serve a lot :) it exported this video in 20 seconds and had no difficulties with fx. My last comp would've been 6 minutes and couldn't render these fx 😄

Music goes hard, and yay faster rendering. I recently went from a 2011 computer which rendered HD at 2-4x real-time to a 2022 (2023?) laptop that renders HD in 10-20x realtime and UHD in 2-4x, so I know exactly how that step-up you mentioned in the comments feels for just bashing out a project. I'm hoping this computer will last as long or even longer than the one it replaced. (I guess this video didn't quite go at 10x for you, but you _did_ add all those squiggly wiggly effects ;) so you'll probably go much faster most of the time. My tests were purely about transcoding, and stitching-together into a longer clip.)

Thank you! I tried to make the song reflect how I was feeling trying to decide and how I felt once I went for it. That is a nice jump in speed for your build! How are you liking the laptop overall? The new system I have is very nice. I think Adobe didn't even support 5th gen Intels and below so wasn't even functioning properly to begin with! However, I was using some effects in my last video and noticed it slowed down similarly to my previous build making me think it's a software issue. I have been really pushing it and it has been handling well otherwise though. It sounds like you know a lot more about video stuff than me (I need to learn so much more!).

@@ModIcore I don’t know if I _still_ know much about video - I did most of my dabbling in 2007-2012! Before I had to worry about adult life. But then I do advise pals and partners on codecs still sometimes. My first thought from your mention of effects not being sped up as much as you thought is to check the effects can all be GPU accelerated and that that’s enabled in all the settings. The media engine cores, either in the GPU or the CPU, should handle the video encoding after the FX; but some VFX are “software only” (pure CPU) for their maths even though nowadays most can run on a GPU. If it’s built in Adobe effects they should all be accelerate-able, but unless it’s changed in the last 10 years they’re not always accelerated by default without changing settings (frustratingly). I’m trying to get back into it tho, hence my recent render tests. Just DaVinci Resolve for now, I don’t like Adobe very much anymore. Keeping the old machine around though, for Photoshop CS6 (Adobe did some unexpectedly sneaky things to stop me bringing that install with me, they want people to move to CC so badly!); and some older audio plugins (since I could use the desktop like an outboard effect over an optical-audio return channel). My old desktop had a 2nd gen i7 in it haha, so yeah more and more software wasn’t working properly even when it still technically had enough speed. I like the laptop well enough, it was a bit of an adjustment though. In a good way overall, like I get much less fan noise. I used to have a low powered ultrabook for portability beside my main desktop for creative work, and was really looking to replace that. But all of them were more powerful than my desktop too, so it felt silly to not just replace both. Then I made sure the storage, RAM, etc was appropriate for replacing the desktop as well. It’s plugged into the same monitors and everything, though compared to the laptop screen they look kinda low res and dim now 😅 though it is nice to have all my projects with me, rather than having to copy data off a desktop onto a laptop all the time.

@@kaitlyn__L I think understanding the fundamentals is still relevant. There are just new techniques and tools that need to be learned. Kind of like learning an equalizer; you learn the basics and then apply that to different types (graphic, parametric etc). Your advice on GPU acceleration is fantastic! Thank you. I do know that my video card adjusts its setting depending on what program is being used. A popup shows up each time. Sounds like I have a lot of research to do. May be worth it though. I heard DaVinci is as good if not better than Premiere Pro. I don't have it in me to make the jump yet. Maybe if I were retired or something and had the time to learn both! Glad you are enjoying getting back into the video hobby! CC is creative cloud? I am not too familiar with the Adobe products. My partner has the monthly thing and said I should try it/go for it which worked out. Adobe is not nice sneaking things in to coerce conversion, sounds like Windows! I do miss my 32bit plugins. The Grand was a great piano sampler and listening to some old tracks made me sad. Glad you are liking the laptop! They are a vibe! I just worry about longevity with laptops. Sounds like yours is not super heated and will last. That is so funny that the laptops are more powerful than your laptops haha 2nd gen i7! I just purchased a 4k monitor at $150 delivered! Woot! My partner brought over hers and she said I need to get one now ~_~ Things do look really nice with it though it's 60hz refresh rate instead of 144hz and not sure how my eyes will react. Hers was a bit painful at first. I am sure your data transfer from the desktop took quite a bit of time for videos! What is your typical video length? My Making music videos in 33min chunks and they still take about 4-5 minutes to transfer. That is the one bummer thing about my new computer, thought it would be faster.

@@ModIcore haha well, back then the video files weren’t huge. With whatever speed of SD card, transferring low bitrate SD footage, it was fine. Wasn’t great, wasn’t terrible; better than real time dubbing which was all I’d known before then from my family’s VHS-C camera! It also helps that I largely took small clips and edited them together into 5-10 minute videos, back when you couldn’t upload anything longer than 10 minutes anyways. As to your video card changing settings based on the program that’s open… that sounds like a video setting type thing in the card’s driver software. Like when opening a game and it says X Y Z gaming feature is now turned on. That’s entirely separate from the setting in Premiere and After Effects (and in plugins), which is about computation rather than video output settings (or fan speed or whatever those messages bring up). Honestly, I didn’t find it to be too different. Back in the day I’d only used Final Cut and Premiere, and Resolve is very similar to Premiere. The biggest difference is just the way the VFX, audio mastering, colour grading etc are tabs in Resolve rather than entirely separate programs like in Adobe land (AE, Audition, not sure what their colour grading is called). The actual timeline, palette of editing tools etc took me no time at all to get used to. No worse than jumping a bunch of Premiere versions in one go - which I guess doesn’t happen anymore with CC. With CS some places went from, say, CS2 to CS6 and there was a minimal period of adjustment.

@@kaitlyn__L Ah, true! Storage and file sizes were so much smaller back then. I'm so sorry you had to do real time dubbing. I did that for my "which song for my next music video?" video and it was excruciating. It is video card software yes. I figured there might be some correlation, but shows how much I know! I see. I heard people like Davinci because it is free and makes some things easier. I think people like the color features better than Premiere, but I am enjoying them. I will need to ask my partner what other coloring stuff is on the other parts of Adobe Land. I think I picked up the timeline and maneuverability of the program quickly was because of using DAWs for so many years. It just feels more cramped and more "awww do I really have to go that way??" to me. Like trying to scroll upwards is too fast. I may not know what I'm doing though.

Haha it's insanely big right??? Blown away. I'm going to do a proper computer build video to go through my process and why I selected this stuff. My friends are telling me that I have to play games with this video card. I bought it for adobe (and i've always wanted a power color because of it's cooling capabilities) and it is incredible. No issues with intense effects and exports so freaking fast. Huge quality of life improvement all around. Hope you've been well, Dave!
