The sockets look like they're pretty nice already. I had a 386SX-16 that had SIPP memory chips, and installing RAM was ridiculous. A SIPP is like a SIMM that just has 30 pins on the edge. It took sooooo much force.

This method is also used on computer CPUs. Which have many many pins. You just drop the CPU on the motherboard and then close a lever to lock it in.

I seem to be repeating myself from the Jupiter 8 (etc...) video a week back! Again, Howard Jones toured with the Drumulator as part of his live rig (he originally used an 808). I worked for a synth company in the UK in the 80's, and we serviced his gear. Great video. Although I thought you were going to solder in the replacement ZIF sockets!

Rock on! You had a really cool job!! These ZIFs are good quality and no need to solder them in, they are very stable! :) I remember Howard Jones with the 808 for sure, need to check out some old footage to check out the Drumulator too, then ;)

For newbies - use extreme caution with static when working on electronics. ESD best practices are easy to find on the we can start with a basic wrist strap. Wurth has a video on ESD risks showing you can pass over 10,000 volts to your electronics via "static electricity".

In the drawers I have literally dozens of wrist straps that came for free with pieces of equipment I bought over the years - I never use them and never had one single problem. I like to live dangerously. Thanks for jinxing it, though!

Good Day Paolo excellent video and looking to do this on one of my drum machines, I read in the comment that someone has a Kawai R-100 I have both models 100 | 50 , I looked up at the Aries website but unsure which one to choose ? I'm sure its a 40 pin socket but options are required to select?? , I been budling a library of custom sounds but do not like the idea of forcing chips when interchange, could you suggest please which one would be a good candidate for my drum machine? I greatly appreciate Paolo have an excellent day buddy!! 👍

Awesome video :) I noticed that at 4:52 your EPROM window cover has fallen off. This risks stray UV light exposure erasing or corrupting your program ROM. You'll want to cover that clear window on the chip with some opaque tape so that UV light doesn't damage or erase it accidentally.
@SynthManiaDotCom
@SynthManiaDotCom 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The cover is there but I think the hard angle from the studio lights make it look like it's missing. Great point though!

The drum sound cartridges in dynacord drum modules (racks) were so easy compared to this chips! Cartridges at the size of a matchbox inserted in front sockets of the drum machine, or excanged with others on the fly .so much fun and memories especially cartridges with ultra classic vocal chops 😆

I have a Simmons SDS9 and a TON of EPROMs for it. I'm hoping I can find a Linn style drum machine that I can use these EPROMs in, I know the Linn has a different size EPROM so it won't work with that. The Drumulator look to be the same size as these Simmons ones!

That "Rock Drum" ROM chip set (by Digi Drums), did they sell the same sound library ROMs for other drum machines as well? That drum samples sound very familiar! Great video again!
@SynthManiaDotCom

Thank you and yeah - they started with the Drumulator - IIRC reading somewhere - because they were near E-mu, and then started to offer their chips for other drum machines of the era, too. Eventually they became Digidesign (of Pro Tools fame). "Digidrums opened for business at the January NAMM show, with several alternate sound sets for the Drumulator. They've rather expanded since then. Now they offer 15 sets for the Drumulator, and 35 individual sounds for the Sequential Circuits Drumtraks. Coming soon, they say, are alternate sounds for the Oberheim and Linn drum machines." Source: www.muzines.co.uk/articles/namm-report/8465

Mouser, Digi-Key, Jameco etc. have them, the ones I used in the video are from Aries, I forget the part number but can look it up tomorrow - if you search for "zif socket 28 pin" you should find them in their stock. I guess you do not really change the OS ROM as often as the Sound ROMs. Someone should have designed a board plugged into these 4 ROMs sockets with some little ARM chip with USB to load sound banks from computers and dump the ROMs to RAMs with double buffering. Maybe you can share a high resolution picture of the 4 ROMs if you have time.

Luckily, those old 'big box' drum machines have enough room in them to just put a ZIF socket into the existing sockets. A lot of other devices don't have the clearance and need to desolder the original sockets and solder-in the replacements.
